Digital content is increasingly gaining ground, more affordable and more efficient support, but is killing the joy of collectors who cherish the good old box.

You know, it's weird: I'm all for the full transition of music and movies to digital content.
But games (and books)? Eh, not so much.
There's just something about having your fave game on hand in a physical form that's tangible and has some weight to it.
But then, I'm usually collecting games for previous-generation consoles, so I'm not finding my joy getting killed all that much by the digital-download revolution.
And so long as there are nostalgia buffs and retro-tech enthusiasts, There will always be a market for [s]old-school[/s] classic games and consoles. A second-hand market to be sure, but a market none the less.
So on one hand, I'm a little bummed by the transition. But on the other, I find it isn't affecting me all that much... at least, not presently.
But who knows what the future will hold?

I don't think its going anywhere anytime soon, at least not for consoles.
Sure PC and handheld developers are starting to get more bang for their buck by not having to produce as many physical copies and get more profit from digital copies.
On the home console front its not too often you can download an entire current gen game, you can in some cases and the list is growing, especially with 360 and PS3 finally upping the size of the available hard drives then it could be interesting to see where it leads for the next generation.
So many people still go to the stores for their games though that I do not see it dying off for a long time, and with a hybrid based system of download and physical media it will only make the physical media more scarce, thus upping its collector's value. At least in theory. Sports games will still be worth $1 in like 3 years but for some things, especially with everybody doing preorder bonuses I don't think it will be full download for another 10-20 years if ever.
They know people like physical swag, otherwise why would companies like Bioware, CD Projekt Red, Bethesda, Obsidian, Bungie and other more fringe developers continue to offer things like cloth maps, statues, small books, photo albums, and the like?

I enjoy collecting and all, but I also like my private space. And space is expensive to buy. I'd rather have all my games stored digitally, and collect select gaming goods. Artbooks, some plush, maps maybe. Plush don't break easily, maps can go on the walls (little used storage space), artbooks have a lot of goodies in a little space).
However, I agree with Sir Psycho: physical games aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Companies like Sony and Nintendo just can't seem to get digital distribution right, which is going to limit their endeavors to go digital.
