bomba's House Of Flancakes

I wrote this in response to a posting on a message board where the user wrote: "Being a 'hardcore gamer' these days involves playing hour upon hour of WoW or FPS on your computer."

That got me thinking. What does it mean to be hardcore player? I certainly consider myself a hardcore player, and over the past few weeks I've played at the most three or four hours of videogames. In fact, I've spent more time scanning magazines and planning new displays for my videogames then actually playing them. Never in a million years would I describe my gaming habits as casual.

I firmly believe that the style of gamer you are completely relies on what games you like to play. Do you play only party games on Wii, or nothing but Rockband? Once you have mastered these games will you stop gaming altogether? These represent the gaming habits of a casual gamer, who will only generally only play games that are simple (I'm using the word 'simple' very loosely, so don't flame please) to pick up and play, and also to put back down again. Once the challenge is gone, or once there is nothing left but an arbitrary thing such as score, a casual player will put the game down and not play it again until it is required in a social situation. However many casual gamers will play these games for hundreds of hours on end. I had an old work friend describe how he played Space Invaders on the Atari VCS for weeks at a time, but he never played anything else, and abandoned the game after the Crash of '83.

Hardcore gamers, however, are different. While game companies and distributors will describe a gamer exclusively by the game they play and how frequently they purchase said games, I believe a hardcore gamer can be defined by not only the type of game they play, but also their habits in playing them. Did you play GTA to see for the story, or for the challenge of getting into impossible places the designers hadn't thought of? Did you play a FF game so much that you could finish the game with only one character? Did you write the FAQ on how to do this? Did you read the same FAQ so you could do the learn how that player did it? These are all habits of a hardcore gamer. However these aren't the limits. A hardcore gamer can be a person who plays anything, anytime, for any reason. The real difference between casual and hardcore is that a hardcore gamer will continue to game, regardless of social constraints placed upon them by those of the gaming industry and the media. A casual gamer will often stop gaming if it is considered uncool (which is what I believe really caused the Videogame Crash, that is, perception of games through the media and societal figures), or if they have "played the game out".

So by utilizing what I have stated above, a casual gamer can be someone who plays WoW or an FPS for hundreds of hours, and a hardcore gamer can be someone who only plays games on their current Nintendo system. Confused? That's alright, if there was no confusion then there would be no discussion.

In summary, please remember that we are all gamers, and even though casual gamers may or may not have caused the Crash of '83 (ahem), there is no reason we cannot have a civil discussion without poo-slinging and name-calling.

I think the term hardcore gamer is elitist bullshit. I play videogames because they are fun and I don't care what games I, or anyone else, enjoys.

Hmmm, there's a million ways you can interpret the word "hardcore" and brand gamers as such.

Although I'm not a fan of the term, I consider anyone who is passionate about video games and spends quite some time doing something related to games "hardcore". Whether that is playing lots of WoW, always wanting the latest gfx card in your PC, going to garage sales every week or spending time on internet fora/sites like this, doesn't matter imo.

People who only play video games as a last resort to fight boredom or only play once a month with friends for an hour, are casual gamers in my eyes.

I also believe someone can swing back and forth between being a casual and hardcore gamer. Sometimes I feel like gaming all the time, other times of the year I don't touch a game for almost a month, it really depends.

But again, not really a fan of putting people in categories like this. Wink

Whenever I hear hardcore gamer I think a guy playing videogames whilst fucking, but that's just me.

Sirgin: But that is my exact point, and the exact point I think I made in the article.  There can be many interpretations of a hardcore or casual gamer, but this one is my own.  And as for your fourth paragraph, I don't agree one can be hardcore and then suddenly casual.  If you are hardcore that is what you are:  just as a true headbanger can cut his hair and stop wearing Slayer shirts and still be a headbanger.

Butts:[u/] I think you are completely wrong here.  Take stereotypes for example:  you can walk around and say that there are no such thing as stereotypes, but all you need to do is look around you and see that yes, there are stereotypes.  To say that "the term hardcore gamer is elitist bullshit" is to ignore the obvious as well as what is all around you.

logical123: ... Thank you for that.  I'm sure I'll have this on my mind all day.

Well, what about people who play games to unwind, relax or kill time when they are bored? Casual gamers may play for these reasons if they've got nothing else to do or had a hard day at school/work.

Anyway, I usually surf the internet more than play games, yet I hate the idea on to stop playing a game when you beat it, doesn't make much an achievement than doing something for nothing. That's why I still love playing Gunstar Heroes even though I've beaten it.

I think the fact that you are at this website and are commenting on a blog post that does not appear on the front page says it all, gamepopper.  A casual gamer would have hit back on his browser when he found that the site didn't have ROMs.

I think repetitious game play is a trait of both the casual and the hardcore, so that is not important in the long run.  The real question here what you play:  do you play Guitar Hero or Rock Band obsessively but tell others you don't play games?  Do you even consider titles like Wii Sports, Madden, or Guitar Hero are games?  I think a casual gamer would say yes and no (respectively).  A hardcore would say yes to both, no then yes, or shut up, 'cuz you suck.

Lol I'd call Madden, Wii Sports and Guitar Hero games for sure. I definately wouldnt call WOW a game though.

I'd have to fully agree with Sirgin and bombatomba though. There are many different ways to be "hardcore" (lol Rob), but its really silly to label most people as such.

@bombatomba: If you are going to make an analogy at least make sure it doesn't completely suck.

@yassassass: *looks at above comment*

Lol, yeah that was kind of a stretch, wasn't it?  However, as to my original point, I think that is very clear.

Also, I think a flamer named "Butts Fartso" is absolutely priceless.  Flame on, Butts!

@bombatomba: When did I ever flame you? I recall disagreeing and saying your analogy sucks but I don't remember saying that you as a person or your opinions suck. Perhaps there's some post missing; I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

I don't know, I think Butts Fartso hit the nail on the head with his "elitist bullshit" comment. There never use to be a need to categorise gamers. But now since gaming is such a widespread acceptable thing by many people want to have a label to make their gaming seem more important than those who have only just hopped on board.

@Cobra: Thanks, I just call it like I see it-- and most of the time it ends up being blatantly honest to the point where people assume I'm just trying to be a dick.

I had a huge thing typed up and decided i didn't want to jump into a possibly brewing argument.

It involved popculture, counterculture, fads, etc.

Gamers are gamers regardless of what they play, how they play, how good they are, etc.

I find myself telling people i am a hardcore gamer and/or collector but i can very rarely say i am the best person i know at any game. Even from a collecting aspect i am probably bottom of the barrel as far as quantity and quality of my collection. (Everyone[Scott] who thought about badmouthing my Mortal Kombat can stuff it :-P)

I agree with what has pretty much been said.
That being thrown out there......Ive never understood the term "hardcore" gamer. Sure when we we're kids the term was easier to place, if you considered going home and locking yourself in your room all weekend playing your genesis/snes the most fun you could have in your life then yea you were "hardcore". But now a days "hardcore" as a term in general is overused and worn out (except in porn). Casual on the otherhand IMO works great at describing someone that views playing games as a great way to kill the 30min before dinners ready. Casual gamers arent anymore less of a gamer, but they don't play to get involved in deep storys, or best times etc. They play to kill some time, unstress a bit, or even get a work out.
As a side note I get called hardcore all the time (I hate it) by fellow gamers at work just because I actually have older systems and still play them more than my 360.

So I'm an odd ball. So I am usually the last to post on a blog/forum. So I only post about weird games on weird platforms. So I have a strange relationship with commas and parenthesis. So what? Hey, at least you don't have to car pool with me to work, right? So have a heart, eat a blueberry, and don't forget to drop the empties in the box on the way out. I get deposit on those.
