Happy Holidays everyone!

It has certainly been a long time, but it feels nice to write again.  The fifty-plus hours of work coupled with the full time school schedule and the constant madness of dual-child rearing has paused briefly, allowing me to leave more than a fifteen word comment once a week.  How do I spend this winfall of time?  Do I update my own stale website or post a blurb on the myriad of gaming blogs on the Internet?  No, instead I go to one of the precious few sites that shares my love of gaming, collecting, and general good fun.  I'm talking about you guys.  Seriously, I swear.

Like many of you fellow parents, most of my Christmas money goes to the Santa fund, which provides more entertainment Christmas morning than I can properly explain.  The wife and I rarely exchange gifts, and when we do it's more likely to be something simple, like a night on the town.  This year was different.  Due to my new job (and the massive amount of hours I work) we decided to give each other $40 to do with as we see fit.  I didn't even need to think about what I would spend it on, it was only a question of where.  I saw the answer Monday night before bed - Steam.

December 20th saw the start of a game sale that rivals clearance racks.  Nearly all the games on Steam (over 1,400 at this point) are at least 10% off, with many well over 30% and some 50% to 75% off the original price, and to top it off there are daily deals which often give ludicrous discounts.  Any doubts I had about digital distribution went out the door instantly, especially since most of the games will work without an Internet connection (a fact I was unaware of).  This afternoon I finally snapped up some titles, all which I will add to my collection soon.  All the games are followed by the sale prices with the original in parentheses.  They are:

Red Alert 3 - $4.99 ($19.99)
Far Cry 2 - $4.99 ($19.99)
Half-Life 2: Episode One $3.99 ($7.99)
Half-Life 2: Episode Two $3.99 ($7.99)
Red Faction: Guerilla $9.99 ($19.99)
Stalker Bundle (both Call of Pripyat and Shadow of Chernobyl) $4.99 ($39.99)
Sid Meijer's Pirates! $2.49 ($9.99)
Supreme Commander 2 $3.74 ($14.99)
X2: The Threat $2.49 ($4.99)
Commander Keen $3.74 ($4.99)

Sure, I went over a bit, but I was always the one to push things.  Fortunately the wife just rolled her eyes and walked away.  Now the only problem is the finding time to play them.  Too bad I couldn't get some of that for Christmas this year.

Not over by much though Wink
I am not familiar with all the titles but the prices are great.

I have the Kane Edition of C&C3 i still need to play. LOVE that series.

Man, great price on the Stalker games. I really need to play those. Can't go wrong with Half-Life either.

How is Supreme Commander 2? From my first time with SC1, I didn't like it. All the units looked the same, the buildings were hard to differentiate and the menu system was a mess with undescriptive images for all the buildings/units/upgrades. And the Power Plants (?) upgrade system was a joke. There was a button to indicate you could upgrade it, but then once it was at the max level you'd still see that button there. It just felt like a game that wasn't thought out properly in terms of usability. I felt like I'd have to spend a long time with it just to get to grips with the menu system and learn all the units by heart, which I wasn't willing to do.

@Sirgin:

I personally think that the units in SupCom2 still have that Total Annihilation feel to them (SupCom1 was basically Total Annihilation but with less units and bigger maps), but everything else is different.  The game is much more focused and streamlined, with less emphasis on speed-building a swarm of jerks and attacking.  The demo on Steam is very indicative of the final product and is much more forgiving than SupCom1 (it even gives you time to come to grips with the interface).  It feels more like a C&C game now, though I must say that if you didn't like the basic mechanics (i.e., using Engineers and the main mech to build, balancing everything with metal extractors/power plants) than you might not like.  Regardless, try the demo first.  The units used there are pretty basic, so the biggest thing is the interface (remember right-click and left-click may be different).

The Steam sale is a dangerous thing.  I went in only wanting to buy the Jedi Knight collection, Bioshock 2, and a racing game.  I purchased Jedi Knight, Monkey Island 2 SE, and one of the Indie Bundles.  Then Christmas day my little brother gifted me the THQ pack.  Which was insane (since its double what we normally spend interfamily and that he made a steam account and gifted it to me - he is not a gamer beyond Blades of Steel and Contra).

I didnt even seen SupCom2 but Red Faction Guerilla is awesome.  I highly suggest playing it on easy and just using the hammer.  It leads to insanity.

So I'm an odd ball. So I am usually the last to post on a blog/forum. So I only post about weird games on weird platforms. So I have a strange relationship with commas and parenthesis. So what? Hey, at least you don't have to car pool with me to work, right? So have a heart, eat a blueberry, and don't forget to drop the empties in the box on the way out. I get deposit on those.
