Show Some Love

My son has been gaming on and off with me (and occasionally without me more recently) for about 2 years now. In that time he has played games across many generations and genres. I've seen him enjoy games on the NES, 3DS, DS, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, Sega CDX, SNES, N64 and most recently Neo Geo AES.

Like his father he seems to have a special place in his life for platformers and has always been a Super Mario fan, but has recently been exploring the world of Kirby and loving it. Even with his affinity for platformers he is no stranger to scrolling shooters, 2D fighters, beat 'em ups, 3D action games or run 'n guns. Despite only being 4 and not having developed his reading skills enough to tackle text heavy games he seems to have a keen interest in the RPGs he has seen me play as well and no doubt cant wait to dig in himself.

Over his short life he has been able to hit several gaming milestones such as completing his first level, or finishing a game with a little assistance. But just a couple days ago he was able to do something that I wasnt able to do until I was 2 years older. He finished his first game with no outside assistance!

The game in question isnt particularly hard since it has unlimited continues, but in the past when he has come close he typically gets bored or frustrated and leaves the game before getting to the end. Most recently with Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition's final boss, Seth.

Whatever the reason he had a blast playing Ninja Combat on the AES and stuck with it right until the end. How badass is it that the first game he ever finished was on a Neo Geo AES? How many people can say that? Anyway just thought I'd rant as a proud father of a young fledgling gamer.

Gotta admit, Crab.  I'm a little jealous.  While my son (seven years old) is a frequent gamer, he has very little interest in platformers, RPGs, and other traditional gaming genres (though he is insanely OCD when it comes to Lego action games).  He seems to enjoy Lego games, physics-based games on my iTouch, and hardcore Train sims on the PC.  The train sims he plays are impressive, and when he really gets going he can hit over 20 hours a week (this is reflected in my Steam forum tag).

When I get about ten spare hours and a new soldering iron, I will be repairing my MAME cabinet in a last-ditch effort to get him into classic games.  I have an idea that the Donkey Kong games will interest him.  Wish me luck.

I wouldnt be too jealous just yet bomba. While my son does dabble a bit on his mom's tablet with games they dont seem to keep his attention for long. But like I said he is only 4 so he doesnt have a lot of friends encouraging him to play whats new and cool yet. His taste might be pretty different once he starts going to school and finds out I've been keeping him mostly in the past.

Thats so touching crabby. My goal when I have kids is to pass my collection down to them and hopefully make gamers out of them like you have. I hope they keep adding to it when I pass on. I have no intentions of selling my games so I hope someone can make some use out of it.

thats amazing! i havnt been able to get either my 4 year old brother or 9 year old sister to even touch anything more than a DS...and even then they wont finish games xDD

I can't wait to start gaming with my kid! I can't wait to have my first, only a couple of months now...

A chip off the ol' Crab.

@Link41: Congratulations! Its a lot of fun!

@Duke.Togo: I wish I was that cool when I was 4. He's way ahead of me already.

My daughter just turned 4 and expresses some interest in playing video games.  She completed SMB world 1-1 once at the age of 3, but there was a little luck involved.  She seems to have a pretty short attention span while playing, but likes to watch me play games she picks out.

My boy is about to turn one and has only managed to wreck the bottom shelf of my G.I. Joe collection in my gameroom up to this point. Smiley

Out of my 9 children only 6 of them are old enough to play video games, the youngest 2 of the 6 often play sega mega drive/genesis and super nintendo and it brings a BIG smile to my face when i see them playing and enjoying themselves,LONG LIVE RETRO GAMING.

9 Children!?!?! How can you afford to own a TV?

LOL i have 6 tv's,1 in the loft/attic for me(so i can play my retro games,4 tv's upstairs in the bedrooms and a 42" HD 3D tv in the sitting room for me to play on with my ps3 and my sons xbox360.
