I've reviewed games casually on and off for the better part of the past 15 years. It's something I enjoy doing and I feel like I've got a relatively decent handle on objectively looking at the whole package of what a particular game consists of. What I don't have a lot of experience doing is comparing a game directly to another game, as I usually just look at what is in front of me and for the most part ignore any past or future releases. Can games even be, or should they even be, directly compared to one another?

I have always loved light gun games. All the way back to playing Duck Hunt on the NES as a child, I have always felt that light gun games were special. Though these games can sometimes be lacking in creative gameplay ideas because of the nature of the a gun peripheral, I love the pick up and play aspect of a light gun game, as well as the direct physical correlation between aiming the actual gun and the actions on the screen.

I remember finding out way back when that light guns do not work on high definition televisions. I was disappointed that I would no longer be able to use the light guns I owned at the time for the NES, Xbox, and Dreamcast. Luckily, the Nintendo Wii eventually came along to rekindle my love for the light gun genre. Let's take a look at a few of my favorites.

Episode 2 of Game vs Game covering the N64 and Wii versions of the ever-classic Goldeneye. What a nostalgic game for so many people, 4-Player Multiplayer was a dream. Then years later it got a remake to the Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3.

How do the two compare? Let's find out!

With my recent pick up of Pandora's Tower for my much adored Wii I was struck with the thought that it will likely be the final Wii game I buy at MSRP. I'm a bit saddened by that as the Wii was by far my favorite console of the last generation's choices. We picked it up on launch day and never looked back. It easily got the most usage of the 3 consoles in our house and that is because we primarily use our game consoles for gaming (*gasp*), and rarely for the other features. And with my aversion to digital gaming the Wii had the software that I was most interested in spending my money on. There are far too many great games for me to mention them all so I'm just gonna spend some time outlining some of my favorites.

If you feel I missed out on one of your favorites I'd love to hear about them too!

Welcome to what I hope to be a recurring series of blog posts. As i finish games, it seems fitting to throw my 2 cents out to the world....so without further adieu...!

Geometry Wars: Galaxies ~ Nintendo Wii
Average Used Price: 4$

For anyone who hasn't played it in one form or another, geometry wars is a twin stick shooter that revolves around the idea that bright lights and flashing is fun (if any game needs a seizure warning, it is this). Galaxies takes the original game, which had a square arena and a few different enemies, and added more arenas and more enemies. It also brings a new game play element in with a new "companion". You now have a pod that follows your ship around. Depending on what you pick for it to do, it can fly around and collect "geoms", the game's new currency, attack stuff, defend your ship, etc. The game has a ton of levels and has a neat mechanic, where if you have the DS version, you can link the two games together and unlock a special world in both.

Graphics:9/10
Geometry wars has simple graphics, but what it does have is done well. Lines are sharp. Colors are bright. Even more important is that, even on the wii, there is no slowdown when the screen is swarming with literally hundreds of bullets and enemies.

Audio: 6/10
The soundtrack consists of generic techno music on a loop....which gets pretty repetitive. The actual sound effects feel very generic as well, and come out sorta "muddy", even on a nicer sound system.

Control: 15/20
The game gives you the option of playing wiimote+nunchaku, or with the classic controller. While playing with the wiimote is "possible", i wouldn't recommend it...ever. Twin stick shooters need two sticks. With the classic controller, the game plays and feels great.

Gameplay: 40/50
Geometry Wars is fun. Period. What are you waiting for? Go play it!

In all seriousness, the game is fun on its own...and the addition to a leveling system for your pod, as well as a ton of levels should keep you playing for days.

With enough time, it'll get stale for a bit...you'll put it away...and then later on pick back up and have as much fun as you started...but the same could be said for many classic arcade games.

Replay: 10/10
Geometry Wars is a game that you will keep on picking up and trying to beat that high score. It has the same addiction level as tetris or pacman, with the game being simplistic, and having a large focus on score. Multiplayer support is great too!

Total 80/100

Geometry Wars: Galaxies is defiantly one to own if you have a wii sitting there collecting dust. At an average used price of about 4$, it's a steal!.....go play it already!

Posted under Star Fox, Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo, 3DS, Wii, Star Fox 64 3D

That's right boys and girls Star Fox is back in all of his Arwing glory, but this time its all in 3D. Sounds cool right well it it is so strap yourself in your in for quite a ride!!!

Story - 7.5/10

For all you SF64 vets you know the story, but newcomers don't so I'll explain the gist of it. The Star Fox Team (Fox McCloud, Peppy Hare, Slippy Toad, and Falco Lombardi) is hired by General Pepper the head of the planet Corneria's army to help stop Andross from invading the Lylat System and take over Corneria. Thats only a small fraction of the story so if you want to know more just look online because I don't want to bore you guys.

Sound/Music - 9/10

The music is outstanding for this remake, the reason for that is the music is re-orchestrated for all the music each music track sounds beautiful I loved it so much I searched for a rip of the music which I found it, but anyway you can listen to the music in the sound test by beating the game. My favorite remade music is the main menu music just so you know. Nintendo also managed to get most of the original voice cast from the N64 days, the only one that changed was Falco (I think), but they do sound older of course. Hey at least it brings back the classic feel.

Controls - 8.5/10

The controls for this are surprisingly great, they are very responsive for the most part. You can change control types to type A or type B, I use type B because it's based off the N64 controls. I won't go into what each button does because iy'll take awhile, but I will say you use the circle pad to move around and you can also invert the axis if you would like to, which means instead of pressing down to go down you would press up. I use this because its like that in the N64 version. I recommend using type B inverted vertical axis. Also they added a function for the d-pad which is cool, certain directions do certain maneuvers, example if you want to do a somersault you would press the corresponding button it says in the options menu.

The gyrosensor controls aren't so because if you are playing in 3D you won't be able to see it effectively cause you'll be to busy moving the system, unless you want to move your body while playing, but i find that annoying, so bottom line if your going to use the motion controls play in 2D. Another bad thing is its hard to aim your lasers at enemies, but you can turn on or off the motion controls by pausing the game and point to off on the touch screen. Oh by the way the only thing thr touch screen is used for is to listen to incoming messages from ROB64 or whoever it may be.

Gameplay/Graphics - 8/10

Now the gameplay is great there are 15 levels total, but you don't play through all of them in one play through. The reason for that is some levels have different endings which change the path, but if you do all the levels the right way you'll get the good ending, anyway there are multiple types of vehicles you could wind up using as well. They are:The Arwing, The Landmaster, and The Blue Marine which are used in different levels of the game. Also there is a mode called "Nintendo 64 Mode" which is the original difficulty of the game because the 3DS mode is easier, so this mode is for all the SF64 vets I guess you could say. Another nice feature they added was it saves after every level.

Now for the bad news guys. NO ONLINE WI-FI MULTIPLAYER!!! Yes that's right no Wi-fi Online its a local only multiplayer which sucks because the added new stiff that wasn't in there like a Cloaking Device, Supernova, and when you kill some one the game displays  the players actual face live via the front camera, which is cool but I don't know anyone local to play multiplayer and see it for myself i'm just going from what i've read. Now you can play multiplayer with CPU opponents, but I haven't done it cause it sounds really dumb and boring.

The graphics are freaking amazing in my opinion, everything has been redone/re-polished and looks very crisp. I forgot to mention in the gameplay section that you can see the status of your arwing by looking at the bottom screen, it also shows the characters when they speak. Anyway the 3D effect is really nice there's some nice pop-outs of enemies, ship engine blast off, etc, But it also adds nice depth to the game too. To make you guys understand how well the graphics are here are some comparison screenshots:

Now I'm just going to tell you when they are N64 and 3DS

N64

3DS

You can't really tell from them how great they are so you'll have to check it out in person.

Replay Value 7.5/10

It has replay value to an extent because you can get gold medals on each of the 15 levels and if you get all medals on all levels you get expert mode, there is a Score Attack mode, which is where you get as many hits as you can before the level ends. Other than that nothing really that special.

Well I hope this review helps people that are on the fence about buying it. Oh and don't forget to DO A BARREL ROLL!!!

Nintendo Magic is a book that has a distinct Japanese quality about it. The attitude taken is far from objective, and even downright gushing at times. It looks mostly at Nintendo as a company and business, and spends its time describing the key players of such.

The book consists of eight chapters plus a prologue and epilogue, making it a fairly short read at roughly 200 pages. It is well translated and was written at the height of the Wii and DS bubble, which casts an extremely favorable light on its leaders. It begins by describing the ascension of Wii after the poor showing of the Game Cube, and the process and ideas behind it and the DS. Later the book backtracks to capture some history on Nintendo, focusing mostly on Gunpei Yokoi, his design philosophy, and the Game & Watch. It also spends a chapter giving an overview of Nintendo history from the beginning. Then the book wraps up by coming back to recent happenings and spends a moment discussing the only competitor really mentioned in depth in the book, Apple.

What I enjoyed most about this book is that the author actually got to interview Satoru Iwata, Shigeru Miyamoto, and even Hiroshi Yamauchi. While not heavy with quotes, it does give an intersting look inside that I have yet to see in any other books on Nintendo of Japan. There are even excerpts used from Gunpei Yokoi's book, which is still unavailable in English but has a French translation.

Being a business profile, Nintendo Magic includes the numbers and stats, but also manages to put together a very interesting narrative. For any Nintendo fan, I can't recommend this book enough. For those that aren't, it is still an insightful profile of one of the biggest players in the industry.

Greetings from Terra...

Between trying to make my temp job permanent, shaping up, sprucing up the Zagnorch Ponderosa, and getting the ol' lemon running properly, I figured I wouldn't be able to get in on the RF Generation summer gaming challenge for lack of time to devote to it.

But then I realized I have a ton of games I'm either part-way through or this close to completing, and I figured I could take care of 'em in my sparse spare time. I know it's something of a cop-out, and a lazy way to go. But, given the situation, it's the best I can do.

And away we go:

Super Mario 64 DS: 134 stars down, 16 to go.

StarFox Command (DS): I'm stuck on that level where you use the stylus to clear away part of the cloud cover to reveal where the enemy is hiding.

Bomberman DS: I've yet to get past the boss on Level 8.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES): It's been so long since I last played this, I've forgotten where I left off...

Tecmo Super Bowl (SNES): All I want to do is get the 49ers to win a Super Bowl on three-year mode. My last three-year deal saw me lose two consecutive NFC championships before getting waxed in the Super Bowl in season three...

...by the Buffalo Bills.

THE FREAKING BILLS!!!  WHAT THE #3LL, MAN!!!

CrossworDS: I've been chipping away at this one for the last couple years. While it also includes word search and anagrams, I'm focused on finishing just the crossword puzzles.

Sonic Rush (DS): Forget about the d@mn fourth chaos emerald-- it's the fershlugginer seventh one I'm having a #3lluva a time grabbing...

Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World (GBA): I still haven't gotten past that level where I hafta let Yoshi plunge to his death to save my own sorry @$$. I've killed enough Yoshis and Marios on this level to fill a virtual Grand Canyon. O, the soul-crushing guilt...

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters (PSP): I've been neglecting my PSP lately, so I figure I should finish up Size Matters before it sics child protective services on me.

Wii Fit Plus: Actually, I haven't started this one yet. Never the less, I figure I'd give it a go to supplement my efforts to shape up this summer. I'm not so sure there's a way to properly beat or finish it, though. I suppose I can consider it "beaten" when I make my goal weight.

And there you have it. For the most part, I'm aiming to complete a buncha fruity handheld platformer-adventure titles I've been procrastinating on, with nary an uber-hardcore title in the lot.

G0d, I am such a chick...

Animal Crossing: A popular game, right? Of course it is. It's fun, and it obviously keeps people entertained...except me. Now, don't get me wrong. I love these games, and the first time I played on the Gamecube, I kept playing for weeks. When the DS Version came out, I played it for a while too, but when the Wii Version came out, I couldn't get into it that much.

This brings me to the big question: Why can't I continue playing it when I start a new game? I mean, there's a good game here, and all the pieces are in the right places, but I just can't keep playing. Is it because it kind of forces you to keep playing to keep your Town looking good? Is it because I saw the Credits and I considered it beat? I just don't understand this. Anyway, what brought all this up? I was watching a Flash Movie, and it reminded me of Animal Crossing. Anyway, I could use some help here. If anyone has played any of the 3 (4 in Japan) Games in the series, could you please shout out in the comments what it was that kept you coming back for more? Thank you!

Also, Ninja Gaiden for the NES kicks ass, but it's really tough. I love it!

So yeah, I haven't done a blog entry in quite some time, but I figured why not come back with a bang? Here's my yearly Black Friday deals post, a little early this time. As far as I know, everything on this post should be accurate. I used leaked scans from the ads found at blackfriday.info and some info from cheapassgamer.com. However, I did start working on this post about a week and half ago, so deals may have changed last minute. I'll review it on Thanksgiving day to check and see if what I have is correct. If you see any errors, please leave them in the comments.

Items in bold are ones that I think are pretty cool and worth checking out.

First things first: here's some notable deals I want to get out of the way from retailers that don't get a special spot in the listing:

Dualshock 3 for $30 at RadioShack
Lego Rock Band FREE when you buy $20 of stuff at Old Navy

Also, be sure to keep your eye on Amazon's Black Friday week section. They have some great deals going on all week.

Posted under Contra Rebirth Wiiware Wii, Wii, Contra, Rebirth Nintendo DS Genesis Konami Virtual Console.

ok this is my second review bit this time its a Wii game specifically a Wiiware Game called Contra Rebirth. I will rate gameplay, sound, story, controls, difficulty, and replay value  THIS REVIEW DOES CONTAIN SOME SMALL SPOILERS ABOUT UNLOCKABLES! So anyway on with the review!

Story 6.0/10

This description of the story comes from gamefaqs.com.

Chief Salamander and his Neo-Salamander Force travel back to 1973 A.D. to invade Earth. They land in Central America and take control of the Shizuoka ruins on the Yucatan Peninsula. There, the aliens plan the destruction of all the "Contra" on Earth. The Galactic President calls on Lance Bean, a member of the elite "Contra" warriors, to save the day, but his sudden disappearance jeopardizes the safety of the planet. Now, Bill Rizer and samurai Genbei Yagyu are the last hope for Earth. They must pick up their weapons and defeat the evil Neo-Salamander Army before all is lost. Experience the fast-paced, action-packed, side-scrolling adventure that pioneered the run-and-gun genre.

Overall the Story like any other contra game so nothing really to new to it

Controls 9.0/10

Controls are pretty much like any other contra game. You can shoot jump and switch between weapons, but more on that later/

Sound/Music 7.0/10

The sounds of the game are a cross between Contra 4 for DS and the original arcade version. Music is pretty well done nothing too special though.

Graphics 8.0/10

Graphics are very similar to Contra 4 so nothing special here either

Gameplay/Difficulty 8/10

Ok game is similar to the SNES Contra III: Alien Wars, by that I mean you can have two weapons at once. Oh and I recommend playing with a Classic Controller or Gamecube Controller because if you don't you will have to set the button to switch between weapons, but still I find it easier with the Classic and Gamecube Controllers. Weapons is where this game falters a bit because there are only 4 weapons Normal Gun (Machine Gun), Spread Gun, Laser, and Homing Missile. This game is also 2 players. Difficulty is pretty much like any other Contra but you get unlimited continues so it's pretty easy, but it can be frustrating. There are 5 levels. Also in the options you can change lives, (max is seven lives) screen layout , and others.

Replay value 7.5/10

Replay value is pretty good considering there is 4 unlockable things. They are:

Nightmare Difficulty - Beat Hard Difficulty

BR-W9 - Beat Easy Difficulty

Plissken - Beat Normal Difficulty

Nightmare difficulty is what makes it interesting because every time you kill an enemy a fire ball and blue orb come out and try to kill you so it makes a a little more replayable .

Overall 8.0/10

If you are a Contra fan and have 10 bucks or 1.000 Wi Points buy it You'll enjoy I think its worth it.

Posted under Store Review, PS3, 360, Wii, PS2, Xbox, GameCube, PSP, DS, GBA

I recently decided to get GameFly because I found that there were so many new games I wanted to try out, but not necessarily buy them. So far, i've been very impressed by the service. So much so that I thought I'd let you all know about my experiences so far. If you don't know, GameFly is a rental service, much like NetFlix, that allows you to rent games by mail.

First, let's talk about the main part of the service, renting. Their library of games is extensive. They have almost any game you could want for PS3, 360, Wii, PS2, Xbox, GameCube, DS, PSP, and GBA. So far it seems like most of the games I've wanted to rent are readily available, with the exception of brand new games, which tend to have Low to Very Low availability. But usually they'll be more available in a week or two once the initial renters have returned their copies.

The process of selected what games you want is fairly simple. You simply search the site for the game you want to rent and add it to your GameQ. Once you have titles in your GameQ, you can rearrange them to tell GameFly which you would like to have top priority. When you return a game, they will pick the next available game out of your GameQ and send it. Pretty simple.

You receive the game disc/cart only in an envelope that opens up into a pre-paid return envelope. Inside the envelope you'll find a protective cardboard sleeve with a paper sleeve inside that contains your game. You can keep any game as long as you want. Once you are done with a game, just put it back in the envelope, drop it in the mail and they'll take care of the rest. Once they receive your game, they'll ship out the next available game on your GameQ

In addition to offering rental services, GameFly also has an extensive library of used games for you to buy at a discounted price. Often times, their used game prices beat out GameStop. For example, I bought Prince of Persia for PS3 from them for only $22, whereas GameStop was charging $27 at the time I bought it. Another example: GameStop wants $55 for Red Faction: Guerilla whereas GameFly only wants $43 for it. Another nice thing about GameFly is that if you rent a game and you end up enjoying it, you can opt to keep the game without having to send it back. Oh, and all you CIB whores out there, don't worry, if you decide to keep the game, they will mail you the case and instructions for free. Since the case and instructions haven't been touched by anyone, they're in perfect condition. Oh yeah, I should also mention that all 6 games I've rented from GameFly so far have been in mint condition with no scratches or fingerprints of any kind.

Their shipping times are pretty good too. I live in Minnesota, and it usually takes three days for me to get a game from them or for them to receive a game I send back. However, sometimes when sending a game back, they will use something called fast return, where they ship your next game as soon as they get tracking confirmation from the post office that you put the game in the mail. I haven't figured out how that works yet, however.

Their plans are pretty well-priced too. $15.95 per month for one game out at a time, $22.95 for two games, $29.95 for three games, and $36.95 for four games.

GameFly offers a program called GameFly Rewards to all of its members at no charge. Every three months you are a member, you will get $5 GameFly Dollars to used in their used game store. Also, if you're a member for six months, you will get 5% all purchases from them, and if you're a member for a year, you'll get 10% off. So the longer you remain a member, the better of a deal you'll get if you buy games from them. Add that on top of the $5 they give you every three months, and the savings start to stack up pretty well.

Click here to give it a shot! They have a free trial, and your first month is discounted if you decide to keep going with them.
