One of the games I remember most fondly from my childhood is Contra for the Nintendo Entertainment System.  One of the first great shooters on the NES, it's a game that is a must for anyone's collection.

A friend of mine was having trouble with his NES cutting off during the middle of game play and I suggested he purchase a 72 pin connector and offered to install it for him.  After completing minor surgery on his system the other night, I put in a copy of Contra to test it out.  I figured a full run would be long enough to ensure that the pins were install correctly and that my friend's issue with his system was corrected.  I consider myself a pretty good Contra player and typically never use the code unless playing with a friend (or on the rare occasion, my wife).  Anyway, I ran through the game with ease the first time and began a second run with 5 men.  I quickly finished the 2nd run and again, had more men than I started with (I estimate 8 or 9) and a score somewhere just over 1 million.

I started thinking.....how high does this game score and is it possible to roll it over?  Well, after a quick Google search, I discovered an article on a guy who scored 6,553,500 points.  Hmmm.... After two quick runs and what seemed to be no increase in difficulty, I thought that surely I could beat this score if I put the time in.  My next move was to take it to the source and check Twin Galaxies.  Wouldn't you know it, there are 15 other people with the same score.....  With the impossibility of 15 people reaching an endgame with the same score, I figure that the game's score is cut off at this amount.

Though disappointed, I figure why not still give it a shot.  Hopefully, I'll be posting this score soon, stay tuned.

That would be a badass record to hold, even if you have to share it. Seems like a very odd number to max out on. You could always go the tournament settings route and then you'd only have to share the score with 2 other people. And honestly if you share any score with Tom Votava you're pretty rockin.

Actually, 6553500 is not an odd score at all. If you think about it, maximum unsigned 16-bit integer is 65535, and the game doesn't track anything less than 100 point increments, so the 00 are just there for show.

@Shadow Kisuragi: Sure point out my ignorance Tongue

I was going to echo what Shadow pointed out. It's no more strange than why so many values in games cap at 255. Good luck Banana!

@Shadow Kisuragi: Kind of a doofy thing to say, but I hate the number 65535.  Everytime I see it I can only think that it is only one away from 2^16.

@bombatomba: But it is 2^16 in binary...
0b1111111111111111 = 65535

And here I thought I was reading about Contra and then accidentally stepped into geek math/CS world......

@bickman2k: Doh, stupid networking classes!  Damn you Cisco!!

Alright, my run is starting tonight.  I'm planning on breaking it up and using the pause button.  With two young kids, it's nearly impossible for me to set aside enough time to do it in one sitting.  Since you can also use continues and keep your score, I am vowing to not use them.  A continue will be a reset.

@singlebanana: If you plan on sending a recording in to Twin Galaxies to get your score verified they will reject it if you break it up with pauses. They have a very strict NO PAUSE policy and only tolerate it if its part of the gameplay (swapping Turtles in TMNT or switching power in Mega Man type stuff).

I'm not taping my runs anyway, so I have no intention of sending it in to Twin Galaxies.  It's more of a personal project and for my own self-gratification.  If I happen to get this score I'll take a pic and post it and maybe I'll go for recording it down the road.

Cool! I just wanted to make sure you were aware, because if you went the TG route it would really suck to get your score rejected after all that work over something so silly.

I appreciate it and good to know for the future.
