Many of you in this community probably know me, for better or worse, primarily as "that Atari 2600 game reviewer guy."  My love for the 2600 stems from my love of the system as a youth, and the notorious "Christmas Incident of '82," in which I had asked for an "Atari" for Christmas and woke up Christmas to a brand new 5200 system with 6 new games.....  Why notorious you ask?  Have you ever played a 5200, or know what it's like to be the only kid in town with this piece of s#*t non-backwards compatible system?  So why the love for the 2600 due to my hatred for the 5200?  That's probably a better question for someone like Freud to answer.

Dear child, I can feel your anger running through you....good

Anywho, the main reason for this blog post is to inform you that I will be taking a short break from Atari reviews and shifting focus a bit on reviewing some Vectrex titles.  (Hopefully this won't end like it did when Steve Perry left Journey to record "Street Talk").  Though I'm sure that some of you may be unfamiliar with this unique system, but for those who own one, on purpose, or happened to pick one up at a garage sale, these articles may encourage you to pick up a few more games and fire up the ole vector gal.  If you don't own a Vectrex, you might just be encouraged to go out and find one.  So why the Vectrex and why now?

(1)  The Vectrex is very cool/rad, it has it's own built-in monitor and a pop out controller in one tight package, sweet overlays, plus, all of the graphics are vector (like one of my favorite all time cabinets, Tempest).
(2) I'm currently in the process of moving and I've packed up all of my games and systems except for the Vectrex.
(3) I recently picked up copies of Pole Position and Polar Rescue (the two more expensive and harder to find titles), as well as some great homebrews from domestic developers, as well as a few from "across the pond."  Now that I have most of the titles I want, me getting you interested won't cost me as much. Wink

sweet Vectrex game compilation...for getting pumped

I know some of you might not care for homebrews and get quite "stancy," but for a system that only produced a handful of titles, it's nice to have people out there working hard to keep interest alive in this historic video gaming relic.  Sure, I completely understand the argument about "keeping with original games and intent" and that's certainly each individuals prerogative (**insert Bobby Brown Music here**), but let's face it, the 3-4 guys still producing these games aren't making a whole lot of money for the large amounts of time they invest into creating/testing them, the boxes, the instructions, and yes, sometimes even the overlays, so they deserve some recognition.  In other words, please don't use my blog as a means of demonizing homebrews....you dig?

pfft, I love homebrew. People get homebrew and piracy mixed up. That's the problem.

Fun system, but I've about given up on ever finding one locally. As for the 5200, sorry it ruined your Christmas, but I have a soft spot in my heart for it. Especially for a an excellent homebrew/translation of Sinistar on it.

I'm really ignorant regarding much of the vectrex library. Looking forward to becoming enlightened!

Good luck finding a light pen... Sad

I closed on my new house today and moved all of my games (yes all of them) to my 3rd floor gameroom.  Once I get settled in, I'm planning on sending in some scans to update our Vectrex library.

@noiseredux: I admit there are some lame homebrews out there, but I think it's pretty cool that there are people out there that love specific old systems so much that they program games for them.

@Duke.Togo: The irony is that I have several 5200 games and am looking to buy a system.  All of my relatives, neighbors, and friends had 2600s, so swapping and borrowing games was impossible.  Plus, the damn controllers went out on me about 3 weeks in....which is still typical for those sticks.

@Crabmaster2000: I look forward to getting you obsessed....errrr, I mean "enlightening" you.

@Shadow Kisuragi: A friend and I tried to build our own a few months ago.  It didn't work out so well...I'm more concerned about finding 3-D glasses without breaking the bank.

Yay for Vectrex love!  I've expressed my fondness for this gem many times here at RFGen.  Very much looking forward to what you have lined up!
