Late last year, once all of the annual 'Best of' lists started coming out for the games released in 2016, I lamented the fact that I had only played a paltry four new release titles from the year and thus had no opinion on many of the games that were being discussed.  So in 2017, I was determined to play more new release titles during the year in an effort to stay more up-to-date with all of the discussions going on for the latest and greatest games.  And just like with everything I do, I went insanely overboard and ended up playing nearly 30 new release titles this year.

Instead of doing a traditional Top 10 list of the games I played this year, I wanted to focus on a select few that I thought were particularly great but may unfortunately go unnoticed and slip under the radar of most people.  Most of these games really aren't what you would call obscure, but with the massive amount of great games released this year, it can be easy to forget about the ones that didn't get quite as much coverage.  These also aren't necessarily my favorite games of the year, as I am intentionally leaving out some of the more popular titles that were released.

Back in 2006, a game known as Prey was released for the Xbox 360 and PC. While it was met with positive critical reception, it has been mostly forgotten about over the 10 years since its release.  Truth be told, I rented Prey back when it first came out, but I was very hasty to decide that I didn't like it and returned the game without investing much time into it.  I have always wanted to go back and give the game a proper try since it contains some unique gameplay mechanics, but I have never owned a copy and likely wouldn't have gotten around to it even if I did.

Fast forward to June 2016, a reboot of Prey was shown at E3, and I was immediately intrigued by the trailer.  It instantly reminded me of the original Half-Life, one of my all-time favorite games. It also contained glimpses of some very interesting gameplay mechanics that I was excited to experience for myself.  Since this new game is not a proper sequel to the original, I had no qualms about jumping right in without playing the original.  Make no mistake about it, this new Prey has virtually nothing in common with the original Prey from 2006, save for the name and a general sci-fi theme.

I have never considered myself to be primarily a PC gamer, but there was a time back in the late '90s and early 2000s when I did a considerable amount of gaming on the PC.  During this time, I played such revered classics as Half-Life, Max Payne, and Deus Ex, all of which I would consider to be among my all-time favorites.  Many excellent games were being released exclusively on PC, and when these titles were later ported to consoles, the results were often lackluster. 

One such game from this era that I have always remembered fondly is Mafia.  Releasing less than a year after the immensely popular Grand Theft Auto III, it may be easy to dismiss Mafia as a cheap knockoff.  While Mafia may resemble the Grand Theft Auto series at first glance, I have always felt that it was the "anti-GTA" game.  Although both games share similarities with their open-world environments, crime-based stories, and emphasis on driving and shooting gameplay mechanics, Mafia's more serious and less satirical tone, focus on realism, and larger emphasis on narrative rather than free roaming sandbox gameplay sets it apart from Rockstar's juggernaut.

The original Doom that was released back in 1993 was an extremely important landmark title in gaming.  While not necessarily the first first-person-shooter to hit the market, it was definitely the game that popularized the genre.  I have fond memories of playing Doom sometime back in the mid-90s on PC when I was less than the age of 10, with its gameplay and (at the time) mature content being unlike anything I had ever experienced before.  Although the version I had only contained the first episode, I played through it multiple times, and it is still a game that I find myself going back to even today.  After the Wolfenstein series got a great new entry with MachineGames' excellent Wolfenstein: The New Order, I was confident that id's other classic franchise would receive the same treatment when a new game in the Doom series, simply titled Doom, was shown at E3 2015.  I was not disappointed.  In fact, even after playing other highly acclaimed games from 2016 such as Uncharted 4 and Final Fantasy XV, I still feel like I enjoyed Doom enough to call it my Game of the Year for 2016.

Welcome to what I hope to be a recurring series of blog posts. As i finish games, it seems fitting to throw my 2 cents out to the world....so without further adieu...!



Geometry Wars: Galaxies ~ Nintendo Wii
Average Used Price: 4$


For anyone who hasn't played it in one form or another, geometry wars is a twin stick shooter that revolves around the idea that bright lights and flashing is fun (if any game needs a seizure warning, it is this). Galaxies takes the original game, which had a square arena and a few different enemies, and added more arenas and more enemies. It also brings a new game play element in with a new "companion". You now have a pod that follows your ship around. Depending on what you pick for it to do, it can fly around and collect "geoms", the game's new currency, attack stuff, defend your ship, etc. The game has a ton of levels and has a neat mechanic, where if you have the DS version, you can link the two games together and unlock a special world in both.




Graphics:9/10
Geometry wars has simple graphics, but what it does have is done well. Lines are sharp. Colors are bright. Even more important is that, even on the wii, there is no slowdown when the screen is swarming with literally hundreds of bullets and enemies.



Audio: 6/10
The soundtrack consists of generic techno music on a loop....which gets pretty repetitive. The actual sound effects feel very generic as well, and come out sorta "muddy", even on a nicer sound system.

Control: 15/20
The game gives you the option of playing wiimote+nunchaku, or with the classic controller. While playing with the wiimote is "possible", i wouldn't recommend it...ever. Twin stick shooters need two sticks. With the classic controller, the game plays and feels great.

Gameplay: 40/50
Geometry Wars is fun. Period. What are you waiting for? Go play it!

In all seriousness, the game is fun on its own...and the addition to a leveling system for your pod, as well as a ton of levels should keep you playing for days.

With enough time, it'll get stale for a bit...you'll put it away...and then later on pick back up and have as much fun as you started...but the same could be said for many classic arcade games.

Replay: 10/10
Geometry Wars is a game that you will keep on picking up and trying to beat that high score. It has the same addiction level as tetris or pacman, with the game being simplistic, and having a large focus on score. Multiplayer support is great too!

Total 80/100

Geometry Wars: Galaxies is defiantly one to own if you have a wii sitting there collecting dust. At an average used price of about 4$, it's a steal!.....go play it already!

So last night I officially completed my 10th and final game from my Summer Gaming Challenge list

1. Sin & Punishment: Star Successor (Wii)
2. Vay (Sega CD)
3. Super Mario Sunshine (GCN)
4. Wario Land (VB)
5. Battletoads/Double Dragon (SNES)
6. Panzer Dragoon (Sat)
7. Kung Fu (NES)
8. Gex (3DO)
9. Chrono Cross (PS)
10. FFXII (PS2)

11. Final Fantasy VIII (PS)*

It was great to get this many games crossed off my backlog, especially so many games that are well known and that I probably should have finished years ago.

My favorites were easily Vay and Sin & Punishment. Its hard to say which one I liked better since they are obviously so different its extremely hard to compare them. Vay was very simple and I just happened to be in the mood for simple while I was playing so that was very nice, but the parts I loved the most was the Working Designs humor spread throughout the game, and the major plot twist part way through. I liked the humor so much that I literally talked to every NPC in the game mulitple times to get every ounce of comedy I could squeeze out of them. Generally I dont spend a lot of time with NPC, but I felt compelled to this time around.

Sin & Punishment was just a non-stop actionfest. It looked fantastic, played flawlessly and was both fun and frantic at the same time. One of the best games I've played on the Wii and probably even on any current gen system.

The only really snoozers on the list for me were Super Mario Sunshine and Final Fantasy VIII.

The use of the jet pack nozzle on Mario took away all the platforming elements from the game almost entirely. The game had a very unique style, but felt borrowed from something else and not very "Mario" to me. The music, setting and characters all seemed very un-Mario.

FFVIII drove me nuts from the beginning. The Draw system seemed pointless, GF were  not my cup of tea, levelling was pointless, the main characters was a douche from the get go and never got any better, the supporting characters were all very uninteresting. I didnt actually finish the game, but was saved at the last dungeon about 30 hours in. I feel I gave it more than a fair chance.

Both Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy XII surprised me.

I came in with very low expectations of FFXII. The story and characters kept me interested enough to keep plugging away with a battle and levelling system that I didnt particularily enjoy at the beginning. Luckily both grew on me over time and I'm glad I got to see how the story played out from start to end. Not a fantastic game, but decent.

Chrono Cross was similar. Slow start and akward battle/levelling. The story was kind of unusual, but not that intriguing at first. That changed drastically during the last several hours of the game. Not only did the story make much more sense and get a lot more interesting, but it made the plot from Chrono Trigger seem even more epic that it already was. It was pretty cool at first having so many different characters available for your party, but it became apparent fairly quickly that I'd never use 90% of them. Glad I stuck with this one to the end because the last few hours of plot were wonderful.

The rest of the list were solid entries into their respective genres. The blend of both series in Battletoads/Double Dragon was incredible. The pacing and boss fights in Panzer Dragoon were spot on. Kung Fu, while simple and short, had kind of a Super Mario Bros fun to its simplicity. Warioland was what you'd expect from a Wario platformer, it didnt blow me away, but it delivered what I thought it would. Gex was slightly less interesting than I thought it would be, but was average and worth keeping around for the novelty.

Definitely a fun way to clear a few games off my backlog and already have a few games in mind for next year!!

"BUCKY! Captain Bucky O'Hare!"

I doubt too many people heard these words on Saturday Mornings in the 90s, as it wasn't exactly a popular Cartoon. Based off a comic book, Bucky O'Hare is the story of a Green Rabbit who fights Toads in Space. So, why am I posting this in a Blog about Nintendo Games? Because it got an NES Game!



I first played this game on my Brother's NES at my Dad's House when I was just a kid. I loved every minute of it. I have not played it since, but I'd love to get another chance at it. As I recall, it was a very fun game, and I spent loads of time playing it. Sadly, I could never beat it, as I was just a kid, and it was pretty challenging.

Anyway, the NES game was not the end of Bucky, because as I mentioned before, he had his own cartoon, which sadly, only lasted 13 Episodes. Bucky would not give up that easily though. As if to offer resolution to his Cartoon Series, an Arcade only sequel to the Cartoon Series was released, which details his Final Battle against The Toad Menace.



The Arcade Version was also developed by Konami, but because of it's different story, it was not a port of the NES Game. Like I said before, it was a sequel to the Cartoon Series, and even featured the Voice Actors from the Cartoon, which was pretty cool. Smiley

So, what has become of Bucky since his final battle with the Toads? According to Wikipedia, a 3D Cartoon was produced by the original Comic Book Author. Yes, I did neglect to mention that Bucky started as a Comic Book Hero. Sorry!

Anyway, I would really like to play the NES Game again. If anyone has a copy for sale or trade, could you send me a PM or leave a comment on this entry? I'd appreciate it.
