Having bought a Nintendo Wii for my wife, it was inevitable that I'd pick up a couple games for it eventually. While I really don't care for the Wii's controls at all, I do like it's potential as a lightgun system. So I thought I'd choose Link's Crossbow Training as my first review since it's the first Wii game I've really enjoyed a lot.

In case you didn't know, this game is a pack-in with the Wii Zapper peripheral. The bundle costs $19.99 US, $24.99Cdn, £29.99 or 3800 yen depending on your region. I should also mention for you Club Nintendo members out there, has a registration code for an easy 50 coins like most Wii games do.

So I've put around 2 hours or so into this game, They say it's a 15-20 hour title 100% completed and if that's the case there's some nice value for the money.

The graphics and sound are superb for this game. I didn't care much for Wind Waker but this Cel-like style suits the DS very well. Controls are tight and easy to use. It's what I imagine Ninja Gaiden DS and Animal Crossing would be if they merged into one game. From what I've seen so far you can pretty much play the whole game with a stylus in either hand and maybe only need to use a shoulder button from time to time or the mic.

Gameplay is classic Zelda. Puzzles, a bit of dungeon crawling, some sailing etc along with using the map more extensively and making notes on it like places to come back to later or routes to take to avoid traps. I imagine side quests as well once you get into the game more.

My only concern right now is exploring. Something I always thought was great about the series. Like Wind Waker it seems more restricted and smaller because of the open water/island maps. Hopefully there will be some free roaming land masses once the rest of the map becomes visible.

Although the opening sequence and story is a bit lame and reeking of deja vu, it's a light hearted game I'm really enjoying. It's certainly got a respectable amount of charm I've found lacking in the last console one, but I think this will be the last Zelda of it's type they can get away with before the series becomes tired and needing an overhaul.

If you've played:

Wind Waker
Minish Cap
Animal Crossing

You'll like this game for sure. Just keep in mind it's easier, more casual and laidback.

Posted under Gaming, NES, Zelda, Holy crap those trees sure are green,

From my old blog, posted July 25:

I'm not a big NES fan, never have been. But there's always been a small list of NES titles that I love very much, LoZ is among them. Between the Gamecube Bonus disc, GBA re-release and emulation I hadn't played an actual copy of Zelda on a real NES for probably 17 years or more.

So I had decided out of the blue to hook up a NES and play a few games. When I had gotten to Zelda I decided that I'll keep it hooked up for a while longer. It's almost unbelievable that after so long, I can still feel comfortable with a NES pad in my hands and navigate the map and dungeons like an old pro. Just like riding a bke I guess. One thing that did surprise me was the green colour of the woods. I had forgotten just how green they were, a detail perhaps lost on remakes or re-releases lately.

Of course then I had remembered how much we used to play on B&W TV's which were still being made and used in the late 80's. And how we'd beg our parents to use the "big" set in the living room. I happen to have a black and white set sitting on top of my second TV in the bedroom, more or less for nostalgia and Pong. I bet if I hooked my NES up to that I'd feel like a kid again, though my old eyes will have to squint to see the small 13" screen.
