'Just as you stole the enemy's secret weapon and started back, the enemy spotted you! Now you must fight your way back to safety. But be careful! You're in the line of fire.'
Review:

Line of fire is your typical arcade game. 6 short levels of top down view shooting, while driving a jeep, flying a helicopter or seafaring a boat. This isn't real life, so you will need a reason for the killing. You are jack. He just discovered a secret weapon at an enemy's base. Regrettably the enemy just discovered Jack at their base. All you can do now is shoot your way out of it until you reach the coast. Luckily the story isn't too complicated, so you can go on a killing spree that would make Robocop jealous without having to think about what to do next. In fact, it's better not to think at all. Just keep pushing those buttons and everything will work out fine. 'Won't that get boring?', I hear you think. NO! You won't even have time to get bored, since you can finish this game under 30 minutes.

This little intro may make it sound like a bad game, but according to me quite the opposite is true. This is a great game. They just left out everything you don't need and optimised everything you do need. Who needs a story? Or a game that takes hours and hours to complete? Not me. I want a shooter with fluid control that is fun for 30 minutes, since I won't be playing it longer anyway.

There's a little intro that shows jack being discovered. I must say I've seen a lot of better intros than this one. The graphics have more details than the SMS can properly handle. It does give the game a certain serious look, but I'm no fan of that. The same serious looks are in the levels itself. Only natural colours here. I'm still not sure if this is a bad or a good thing. I don't like the looks of it, but I do like the atmosphere it gives.

The graphical effects are ok. When something explodes you get a nice explosion. Disappointingly there is nothing when you shoot people. I know people can't explode, but a nice flash wouldn't hurt the overall look of the game.

The sound is one of the best ever heard on the Master System. The music is sublime and the effects are as real as they can get on the classical system. Not all sounds are realistic. You hear a 'bowww' sound when you get hit, but it makes exactly clear what's going on.

Only one disappointment in this game. The impossibility to choose your own weapon. There's a weapon for every button. B for a gun, A for a missile launcher. It's impossible to use your missiles on ground targets, just as it is to use the gun for air targets (unless you jump over a ramp). Shoot 3 times in a row and you have to wait a second before you can shoot again. It takes a little speed away, but it adds to the difficulty. After you fired off a missile it's controllable, but it will just go along with the steering of the car, so you have to be careful. The control of the vehicle is as smooth as can be.

This is the perfect collectors game. It's fun to play for a short time and it's possible to finish it in that short time. In 1991, when this game was released, I wouldn't have considered this game worth buying. But with the low prices these games are sold for now, this is a must have.
