Overview:

The evil Jafar has placed the Sultan under a spell and is planning to marry the Sultan's daughter, Princess Jasmine. The only person who can stop the plot is a diamond-in-the-rough street kid named Aladdin. You take the role of Aladdin as he runs and jumps his way through a variety of levels including the city of Agrabah, the Cave of Wonders, and inside the Genie's lamp in order to halt Jafar's plans. In all of the levels you will face a wide array of enemies, but you can dispatch the bad guys by throwing apples at them or using your sword. After you complete a level, you are treated to a bonus game. Only you can stop Jafar and try to woo the princess in Aladdin.

Review:

Akrabah. Setting for one of the most famous Disney movies ever made. Everyone knows the story of Arabian Nights, most famous of which being Aladdin. Maybe the movie became popular because of Robin Williams' voice acting, or maybe it was only because it was a Disney movie, but all I know is that the lineup would not be complete without a video game spinoff. Yes, yes I know. Most of these games are terrible. Not in this case though. Not at all.

Aladdin is a wonderful platformer that features all of your favorite characters. Everyone remembers Aladdin and his friends; Jasmine, Abu, the Genie, and the Sultan. The evil characters are just as memorable; Jafar and Iago. The gameplay is fairly simple. Avoid guards, collect apples to use as a projectile weapon, save the princess, etc. Although simple ideas, this game can be extremely challenging.

The fatal flaw found in this game is something I like to call "The Megaman Syndrome". Everyone remembers points in the Megaman games that made you want to throw your system out of the window at the neighborhood fat kid walking by. Those darn jumps. No matter how good you are at the game, you always get stuck at one point. Aladdin has the same problem. I remember swinging back and forth while trying to time my jumps. All of a sudden, he would jump and miss the platform by a mile and a half. I tell ya. It's times like that that make you want to quit the game alltogether. Luckily, I kept going.

Aside from the aforementioned annoyance, this game is quite fun. Sweet, silky-smooth animation and fluid gameplay mechanics make this Genesis game one of the best for the system. It's almost as if you were playing a cell animated game. Simply stunning, especially for 1993. The combination of fantastic visuals, familiar characters, and fluid gameplay make this one of the best platformers of its time.

Easter Eggs:

  • In the background in the "Inside the Lamp" level, you can see a Sega Genesis in the background.
  • In the Desert level there's a clothes line with just some clothes and a Mickey Mouse hat. Making Aladdin stand underneath the Mickey Mouse hat, you'll get a 1-Up.
  • To get a cheat menu, do this: Go to the option screen and press A,C,A,C,A,C,A,C,B,B,B,B. You can turn on Cheat mode, Level Select, Freeze mode and Map View
  • It is simple to complete the game, simply by pressing the start button followed by A-B-B-A-A-B-B-A then start again let you advance through to the next level immediately
  • The 2D animation for Aladdin and the other characters of the game were done by actual Disney animators and artists who worked on the film
  • In the level where Aladdin has to escape from the Palace Dungeon, eagle-eyed viewers may spot a familiar set of mouse ears located on one of the skulls in the background.
  • Additionally, in that level Sebastian can be seen in the background in chains.
  • Aladdin had digital music throughout the game, using .AMF files, a digital module format similar to .MODs. (AMF is the format used by Otto Chrons' Digital Sound and Music Interface, or DSMI. Another game that uses DSMI for sound, albeit a bit badly, is Archon Ultra.)
