Review:

So you have a game where you control a puppy who is trying to figure out if he's dog enough to impress his crush, and in doing so, he learns to rap with an onion, drive a car with a moose, sell at a flea market with a Jamaican frog, and bake a cake with a hen. That's a game? Heck yeah, it is, and a mighty impressive one at that.

When this game was released, there was not very much innovation in the market. Sure, some will say that the dawning of the new RPG era was upon us, but for the most part, the genre styles were unchanging. Then PaRappa the Rapper comes around. PaRappa the Rapper is an innovative cartoon with a puppy dog named PaRappa, who has a crush on the beautiful Sunny, the sunflower, but isn't sure if he has the courage impress her. Armed only with his motto, "I gotta believe!", and his rapping skills, PaRappa goes forth for the girl. Even though no one gets get killed or beaten, this game is still a blast to play.

During this game you will come across four bizarre teachers. In your first stage, you will meet your mentor, the onion-headed master of a dojo. He teaches you how to rap, karate style. After him, you take your driver's test with the DMV Moose. Then you head off to a flea market to sell items with the Rastafarian frog. Then it's time to bake a cake with Julia Child's alter-ego, a hen. Then you must battle all four masters in order to get into the bathroom. Then, finally, it's time to show off your talents for the whole town at a rave. Sounds random, huh? Well, that's because it is. The best part is that the game remains fun the entire time. Each teacher has a distinct style that you learn from. You'll learn to kick it in reggae, house, pop, and old school rap styles. Sorry kids. No gangsta rap in this game. I guess we won't need to worry about little Sammy getting the sawed-off shotgun and hitting the drugs after this game. Well, one would hope.

The graphics and sound are what sets this game apart from the rest. The animations are all paper dolls moving in a 3D world. When playing, you will most likely not even notice the backgrounds. You'll be too busy following the button combinations. However, if you kick back and watch your friends play a game or two, you'll find yourself not being able to take your eyes off of the backdrops. The music is original, humorous, and catchy, and the voice acting is extremely memorable. You'll find yourself remembering these songs for years.

Sony of Japan started a revolution with this title. This game was ahead of its time, and now we are seeing an influx of music related titles. If you don't own a Playstation, getting one and a copy of this game is highly recommended. It's unreal how much fun you can have with a game that virtually makes no sense. Get it, play it, live it, love it. You won't be sorry.
