Overview:

In 1999, Namco and SNK teamed up to release this port of the arcade classic Pac-Man on SNK's Neo Geo Pocket Color.

Since the NGPC's joystick can move in eight directions as opposed to Pac-Man's four, three red rubber rings were packed in with each game. They could be placed around the joystick to prevent it from being moved in the diagonal directions. Without the rings, Pac-Man can be difficult to control, as slightly moving the joystick to a diagonal may be interpreted as a direction Pac-Man is incapable of moving in.

The game also features two display modes: full screen and scroll. They are appropriately named, as full screen mode displays the entire "table," whereas scroll mode.... scrolls to display only sections of it. This option is especially useful when playing a game like this on such a small screen.

Review:

What is there to say, really? Almost every gamer has played Pac-Man at least once, and some lived and breathed this game when it first graced local arcades everywhere. However, the story of Pac-Man on home video game consoles has not always been so sweet. Luckily for us, the NGPC port of the arcade classic is not subject to a similar fate as its VCS counterpart.

Since the NGPC is a portable system and has an obviously smaller screen to work with, Namco packed in two modes of play -- full screen and scroll. Both work flawlessly, although each has its advantages and disadvantages. In full screen mode, everything onscreen is very small, but in scroll mode, parts of the maze are obscured, and it can be difficult to dodge ghosts at times. If you're looking for other gameplay modes or options beyond these two though, look elsewhere. These two are all you're gonna get.

Graphics and sounds are as good as, if not crisper and generally better than those of the original arcade game, and all of the classic sprites are in tact. However, neither the graphics nor the sounds are up to par with what is standard on the NGPC. After all, this game is over twenty years old, and since Namco was true to Pac-Man's roots, it can't really be expected that these aspects of this game would compare to King of Fighters R-2 and the like.

As I've said, this port of Pac-Man is a great one, but it essentially is the same old thing, rehashed and boxed up in a pretty package. However, if you like the "same old thing" that I speak of, and don't have a good portable version of Pac-Man, then this one is highly recommended.
