Overview:

From the back of the box:

Metro City, a well known Crime Capitol, has been ruled by violence and death for many years. A fact which the newly elected mayor and former Street Fighter, Mike Haggar plans to change. At the center of the problem is the huge gang known as Mad Gear. Mad Gear controlls all of the major criminal activity in the city. When they learned of Haggar's plans, they took immediate action to bring this new mayor under their control. In 1989.

The "immediate action" taken against Haggar is Mad Gear capturing his daughter, Jessica and telling him that nothing has happened to her yet but something will if he does not comply to the requests that Mad Gear has made. So once Haggar hangs up with Mad Gear he calls Guy and Cody and they aid him in his adventure to take down the Mad Gear crime organization and rescue Jessica.

Review:

Another remake for GBA... big surprise. If you grew up in the 90's you played or atleast heard of the Final Fight series. This is a remake of the original Final Fight for SNES.

All in all the game is just your run of the mill beat'em up. It does have a pretty good story line as beat'em ups go, but for the most part if your playing this game it is not for the story, it's so you can beat the hell out of hundreds of enemies. Also there are 2 Bonus Stages one of them you have to destroy a car and the other you break window panes.

So after watching the opening sequence you can either mess around with the options set up a link cable and do some multiplayer or go it alone in the one player. Once you start playing you have 3 characters to choose from, Guy, he resident fighting game Martial Artist, he is fast takes damage quickly and does a decent amount of damage; Cody, who is the all around average character, and finally there is Haggar, the hulking behemoth, strong kinda slow and it takes more hits for him to die.

A break down of what you are going to see for enemies is various average/weak enemies who will only take a few hits to kill; there are a few guys who will take can take unnatural amounts of damage, you will be able to tell by looking at them they are generally fat, really tall or stand out in some other way; and then there are the bosses who vary greatly in difficulty as you progress through the game.

Also as you get farther into the game you can expect the level around you to start attacking you. Shooting flames, rolling barrels are the first instances you will see. The barrels you can dogde with a jump and the flames generally are in a pattern you can for the most part avoid.

I played the game on all of the difficulty modes just to see how much easier or harder it would get. The only noticable differences between the difficulties were enemies having different amounts of health, coming onscreen in smaller more managable groups in the lower dificulties and being more aggressive at the higher difficulties..

If you want a game that is easy to get into but still offers a challenge while playing this game is for you. On the other hand if you want a game that is easy to get into and you want to decimate the enemies with ease this game is still for you... just turn down the difficulty.

One other thing that gives the game some replay value is the Battle Point system. Essentially all this does is keep track of how many enemies you beat the hell out of on your quest to Jessica and the city. At set incements you unlock secrets, some of these secrets are alternate costumes, stage select and the ability to "turbo punch".

I give the game a 90% because although it is just a beat'em up it is executed very well and offers you the incentive of secrets to keep on fighting even after you finish the game.
