Pokémon LeafGreen is the Game Boy Advance remake of the original Pokémon Blue Version for the original Game Boy. This was produced to allow new generations to play through the original storyline, but more importantly, it allowed players of the newer generation Pokémon games to trade the first 251 Pokémon into their games.

This game pretty much sticks to the original storyline faithfully with a few adjustments for newer gameplay rules such as held items, Dark and Steel types, Double/Triple battles, Pokémon breeding, and the competitive Individual and Effort Value statistics system. After completing the main story, a new chapter unfolds in which you must obtain a Ruby and a Sapphire to power the machine that allows you to trade with the Ruby/Sapphire games. (Not too obvious, I hope) During this second quest, you encounter many of the extra 100 Pokémon added from Gold/Silver needed for trading to complete the Pokedex in the Ruby/Sapphire games.

Overall, this game is very well thought out and balanced; Many of the issues and oversights of the original were improved, and while the music and sound effects are the same as you remember from the GB originals, they sound much nicer now, giving you a balanced sense of nostalgia and appreciation of the GBA speaker. The GBA graphics give a big boost to the visuals as well, as the color is nice to see on some of these areas and characters for the first time.

Also, the game can get quite repetitive as many points in the game involve walking long distances searching for certain characters while being bothered by foes who use the same characters and attacks repeatedly. Again, this was resolved by Wi-Fi connectivity in future generations, allowing you to battle other people instead of just computer characters, which allows for more excitement and playability.

Overall, I give this game high marks. The positives are a long and involved play through, a high replay factor, and glitch-free mechanics. The negatives are repetitive visuals, a soundtrack that could have benefitted from some additional tracks above what was already established in the previous games, and the limitations of the trading and battling systems for the full experience. I give Pokémon LeafGreen Version a 9 out of 10.
