Overview:

From the back of the box:

Monsters spawned from another dimension are trying to make the Milky Way galaxy their personal trashcan. As attempts to defend the solar system fail, the fate of the Earth (that's US people!) and even the universe rests with one man.

YOU are Sam "Serious" Stone, a legend in our time. Sam is our only hope against these mischievous miscreants and their evil leader, the one we call "MENTAL."

The only way to get MENTAL and save us all, is to use an ancient artifact called the "Time Lock," to teleport back in time. Don't ask us how or why this is happening. All we can tell you is, this is serious.

Review:

I remember years ago when a buddy of mine went on and on about this new and inexpensive game he had just picked up for his PC...Serious Sam. He invited me over to his place (which had FOUR PCs all networked together) to play this new game.

At the time, I loved it. It seemed like a strange variation of Duke Nukem. It had the same type of humor as Duke; however, the gameplay seemed a bit lacking.

Maybe it's because I've played one too many Tom Clancey games, where I have to think before I shoot. These "shoot anything that moves" games may be wearing a little thin for me. Now don't get me wrong! I love these mindless shoot 'em-up type games...like Doom or Duke. But even in Doom and Duke, there's a bit of strategy needed to survive. In Serious Sam for the Xbox, I just didn't see it.

There's no real backstory to Serious Sam, other than the typical saving the world from monsters, or aliens, or, in this case, invaders from another dimension. The backstory for this game is unnecessary and really adds nothing to the game.

The real mission, other than blowing the bad guys' brains out, is surviving the 36 missions in the game...which I couldn't do. It's not because the game became incredibly difficult, which it did. Actually making your way through 36 levels without becoming incredibly bored to death is the real chore.

I was BORED! I never thought I'd say that about a game like this, but after awhile, I just let Sam die...I just didn't care anymore about Sam or the game. I made it to about level 26 before tossing it back on the shelf next to my copy of Loons.

Level after level, the number of monsters increases and the scenery and backgrounds change only slightly. There are a few simple puzzles to solve later in the game, like platform shifting and figuring out which switch opens which door.

In Sam's arsenal are 15 weapons he can choose from including rocket launchers and flame throwers, all of which can be easily scrolled through...controls for the game are good, but not great. As you get further in the game, and as the number and frequency of monsters increases, you simply can't keep up, no matter how fast you think you can work a controller. You WILL die numerous, very frustrating deaths. I thought I figured out how to keep from dying so quickly...I'd back myself up against a wall and mow down anything that came at me. Unfortunately, the monsters in this game can walk through walls. Hence another frustrating aspect of this game.

The game has a Multiplayer Option, which actually appears to improve the game. You can select either Deathmatch or Co-op. The Deathmatch Option really doesn't offer much else other than seeing someone like you taking pot shots at you.

Graphics and sound aren't extrordinary, although you must use sound in order to tell how far away some of the enemies are if they're coming up from behind. There are some monsters called Beheaded Bombers that will run at you screaming until they run in to you and blow up...funny the first 100 times I heard them. After that, I just wanted to chuck the game across the room.

After saying all that, I don't HATE the game. It's a nice, mindless-type game that's fun to play, but tends to loose its entertainment value not even halfway through the game.
