Overview:

3089 is a procedurally generated, voxel-based, action-RPG indie title developed and published by Phr00t's Software in 2014. It is the fourth in a series of unrelated but structurally similar games released by the author digitally.

In 3089 the player controls a robotic construct created by the Overlord, the mysterious ruler of planet Xax. Your purpose and being are simple: You exist to fight, and fight you must, but the question is, why? Who is the enemy and why do you want to fight them? Do you obey your master or rebel?

Review:

While in reality there was about a three year gap in between 3079 and 3089, I played the two games only a week apart. And what a difference. Where 3079 had very unorthodox character design (especially in relation to the size of NPC characters, which was massive to the point of being comical), 3089 has a very different and more polished look. The game also feels more polished, with nice looking day/night cycle and weather patterns.

The tone of 3089 is far more mysterious, though in the end the gameplay, with the exception of a few annoying nags, is largely the same. You go about, looking for missions, trouble, and items. This time grinding for items is more difficult, as drops are no longer full items but rather pieces of those items, making grinding a far more intensive activity than before, and it was hours before I felt comfortable leaving the starting area for any amount of time. Still, I think I was better off having played 3079 first, as it at least prepared me for the game structure of 3089..

So looking back, not a bad game. While gameplay improvements were minimal, at least the graphical and aesthetic polish were much better. But does it make the game more fun to play? Given the price of the software, I would say yes.
