Got a favorite list of games or genres? Maybe you'd like to see what other gamers consider the best of a genre or system? Well that's what we have the "List 'em" series for! So come, read, comment and participate in RF Generation's way of sharing our love for this hobby as well as paying homage to our personal favorites!
Let's face it folks, there's no genre in gaming more loved and hated at the same time than First Person Shooters. Just about everyone has played an "FPS" at one time or other and owns at least one in their collection. Debates have raged across BBSs, forums, discussion panels and living rooms since the early 90's. Sure they've been around much longer but how many of you can honestly say you've played Maze War anyway? Keyboard/Mouse versus controller, LAN versus TCP/IP, PC versus console, single analog versus dual, CTF versus Deathmatch, the debates rage on and on year after year. Throwing my hat into the ring, I'll list 5 of my favorites and perhaps a few others as runner's up. Feel free as always to comment and/or list your own favorites here. In no particular order:- Dead Man's Hand (Xbox/PC) - Did you know that a "Dead Man's Hand" is a poker term for a 5 card hand used when one has aces and eights of spades and clubs? "Wild Bill" Hickok was murdered in a saloon with these cards in his hand the one and only time he ever sat with his back to the door, hence the name. It also happens to be the name of one of my favorite FPS's which falls under the rarely used "Wild West" theme.
At the time of it's release, game reviewers really shat on this game and concentrated solely on it's shortcomings. The truth is, DMH is a lower budget game with a unique charm and a unique way of approaching the FPS market. Trick shooting, playing poker between levels for ammo and health as well as the simple ferocity of it's authentic era weapons make this game stand out. The music and sound effects are great and it's quite literally a blast to play. In a subgenre of cowboy shooters, it's stands more or less alone but that's also an advantage because it's different.
- Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force (PS2/PC) - Wait, I know what some of you are thinking, "ugh, a Star Trek game?" But this is no ordinary Trek game, far from it. It is in fact possibly the best Trek game ever made and one of the best uses of the Quake III engine ever developed.
Excellent level design, eye/ear candy for it's time and plenty of replay value. Even without the franchise license this game would stand out. If you happen to be a Trek fan, even better. One of my favorite areas of the game is when you get to play an area that resembles the mirror universe from the old 60's series, in all it's deco and nostalgic form. It's also a great game on the PS2 because it supports keyboard/mouse for those of you inclined to that option instead of the dual shock. The polar opposite of Dead Man's Hand, it takes place nearly 400 years in the future and also offers something different from the norm.
- Doom II:Hell on Earth (Every system known) - Now why did I choose Doom II instead of Doom? Simple, it has the double-barreled shotgun, 'nuff said. No one needs to hear the praise of this game for the 1000th time. It rocks, we all know it, simple as that. We can hum the tunes and play it in our sleep it's so familiar. So moving on...
- Prey (X360/PC) - This game has a long backstory spanning a decade. Too far ahead of it's time for the technology available, it took 10 years for PC's and consoles to do it justice. Average Joe fights alien invaders. Sound pretty cliche doesn't it?
What you probably don't know, is that the game has many different spatial & gravity puzzles as well as portals and other mind boggling science fiction. All of it wrapped in a rescue/revenge story with a Native American twist. I've actually seen people get motion sickness when watching or playing the game because of the use of gravity manipulation. One minute your on the ground, the next walking upside down or up a wall in the same level with the push of a button. The spirit mode is fun too, its basically an out of body experience where you become a non- corporeal entity with a bow who can do things and go places a physical body cannot.
Contrary to popular belief, the Xbox 360 library has a humble percentage of 17% First Person Shooters. Not only does that fly in the face of haters of that system, it also means believe it or not, that there isn't quite the variety of FPS's to choose from that so many erroneously believe. To me Prey IS the best FPS on the Xbox 360 hands down, though I suspect the bazillion Halo 3 or CoD4 fans would disagree!
- Medal of Honor (PS1) - Nearly 9 years ago before the big craze that followed, Steven Spielberg had an idea to mix a WWII FPS with a documentary of sorts. Medal of Honor is a standard FPS that mixes cinematic flair with ambience. The sound effects are truly fantastic as well as background ambient noise like planes, artillery etc etc. Each mission is accompanied by actual footage of the Second World War that relates to the mission in question. It serves as both a narrated mission briefing and as a cool reward for game progress. To top that off, it took advantage of the Dual Shock controller and heralded the era of dual stick FPS gameplay, a staple that exists "en masse" to this very day.
Simply put, no one to date has made a war shooter that has as much character, polish and presentation as this one does. It's multiplayer kind of sucks, but it's single player really has to be seen to be appreciated. A fun game that's still fun even now, worthy of any gamer's attention be it war buff or FPS fan.
So that's my list, like it or lump it. I had thought of putting Goldeneye on that list, but to be honest, it hasn't aged well for me. It still brings back many fond memories, but it no longer has the same appeal that others do. Unfortunately that's mostly due to the N64 controller. While I was used to it at the time and didn't mind it at all, the single analog is a hard thing to go back to these days. Same can be said for Turok 2 which almost made the list as well but didn't much for the same reason. Don't read that as a jab at the N64 or it's hardware, I find the same thing when playing Quake III on the Dreamcast as well. At least the DC had a keyboard/mouse to offer an alternative, good thing too! Although I don't play a lot of FPS's on a consistent basis, I still had a hard time whittling down this list to 5 singular stand out choices. There are a lot of classics so in the spirit of giving due credit to those games that almost made it, I'll name a few runners up: Blake Stone, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Rise of the Triad, Alien versus Predator (Jag), Quake I/II/III Arena/IV, Counter-strike, Star Wars Dark Forces, Star Trek Elite Force II, Area 51, Serious Sam, Painkiller, Unreal Tournament.Alright folks, now it's your turn.

I don't know why there is any debate about the best control method for FPS games, it's the mouse/keyboard combo by a mile. A mouse was made for pointing and clicking, the precision is unmatched. Although I'll admit I got playing Quake 3 on my Dreamcast control down to a fine art it still doesn't compare for quickness and accuracy. Just try playing a light gun game with a mouse... it actually takes away all the fun since it's so easy, and then try with a control. You've now got a handicap compared to the light gun.
Ironically as a console gamer I use to hate FPS games, only having a slight interest in Bloodshot for its 2 player split screen story mode, and Zero Tolerance with its multiple characters and many levels. I didn't really take a shining to them until after playing Quake 3 on DC. I hope to one day finish Doom 3 (my current fav) and move on to Quake 4.

All I know is, Crysis sucks.

What the hell?! No Goldeneye?! What a farce!

This genre I struggle with because I don't enjoy FPS games. It's because I'm bad at them, which I am but I'm bad at lots of genres! lol. It's just that I don't enjoy playing FPS games. I never liked Goldeneye (N64) but I did play it a lot against friends. It's something about the way you glide around in those games, kinda makes me dizzy/sick.
So I'll go with:
5. Xybots (Commodore Amiga) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xybots
4. Operation Wolf (Commodore Amiga) http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/getinfo.pl?ID=E-030-S-02250-A Does this count as it's a side scrolling shooter? I am including it anyway!
3. Wolfenstein 3D (PC) http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/getinfo.pl?ID=U-016-S-15950-A If I have to go around shooting people, I'd rather they're Nazis and Hitler!
2. Gun (PS2) http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/getinfo.pl?ID=E-072-S-05360-A It was a nice surprise to enjoy an FPS game in recent years and although I also own and thought Red Dead Revolver would be incredible, I preferred Gun.
1. Alien vs Predator (PC) Scared the crap out of me. GAME OVER MAN, GAME OVER. http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/getinfo.pl?ID=U-016-S-10980-A

Well, I know Tynstar will agree with you on Prey.
I personally can't stand that craptastic title.

Where the hell is Duke Nukem 3D!?!?

I'll have the start of a list when I find 1 FPS that I can stand.

Duke 3D was good and all but I find it doesn't hold up as a re-playable game. All of my choices were based on games that I still find fun even now. Added to that are the Evil Dead games in recent years which having Bruce Campbell is better than copying Bruce Campbell.
Definitely a Top 25 game, but my list doesn't go that far down.

While I liked Prey... it was way too easy to be considered a #1. You couldn't even die, really.
Bioshock gets my vote at #1

Great for mentioning Prey. I loved that game and it didn't get the praise it deserved. It had it's shortcomings (The use of the ghost was ALWAYS to push a switch practically directly on the other side of the door, and you couldn't die) but really great game. I like to call it "Doom 3 if Doom 3 was good"
Anyway, top 5?
Doom GE007 Unreal Tournament Half-Life Deus Ex
In that order.

GoldenEye. Holy bejesus. It's the only FPS I've really enjoyed. So much fun. I don't know if it has aged well, but then on the flip side I have such fond memories of it in the past.
Unreal Tournament. Face, Face II, Face III, Face SE...
Aside from that... well, I am not much of a FPSer

An interesting statistic I'd like to see, is how many people that loved Goldeneye, have beaten it or put in a few good hours of 4 player in the last 7-8 years or so. Might be a good poll of the week. I think part of the reason we don't besides the graphics and control, is how hard that game was to unlock everything in 00 mode. There was as much frustration at times with the single player missions as there was fun with the multiplayer ones. Sure I love a good challenge and all but I'm not so keen on replaying missions over and over again to shave off a few seconds to increase my rating and unlock goodies.
I bought a brand new copy 3-4 years ago, and put maybe an hour total into playing it then. A far cry from the all nighter marathons from the late 90's. Marathons I still do for other games, just not that one. So in the end I decided to choose 5 FPS games I'd sit down and beat again at any moment. That makes a truer list that one borne of memories and nostalgia i my opinion.

Doom II Doom 3 Prey Unreal Tournament / Unreal Tournament 2004 Goldeneye 007
Honorable Mentions: the Marathon series Perfect Dark

Part of the problem for me with Golden Eye is that I consider it a 'recent game' even though I know it isn't. But in the larger scheme of things when Golden Eye was released I already had a busy career and in my spare time, I played PC games. The N64 was a console for when a friend came around (plus I disliked the controller). If I bought a Wii, it would gather dust in much the same way, getting an occasional party appearance. In the end I gave my N64 to my local children's hospital ward. I only miss Mario Kart but not enough to buy it again off Ebay. I think many of the people that love Golden Eye probably grew up playing it and it is THEIR nostalgia. My golden age of gaming is 10-15 years before Golden Eye so I think it's what you enjoy remembering. Cheers.

I've always been strictly a console gamer. I never got into PC games because whenever I tried to "install" one on my PC, I ALWAYS had problems and usually couldn't get the damn game to work! I guess I'm a simpleton. I'm also stuck in the 90's... I'm also a Doom fanatic as you will see... That said...
10. Final Doom (PS) / Unreal Tournament(DC) Tie - Um...ya. 9. Quake 64 Good multiplayer fun. 8. Duke Nukem 64 Pretty cool... 7. Wolfenstein 3d (Jag) Very cool game. Love killing Nazis... 6. Doom 64 I liked this game but it was a touch too dark. Still cool. 5. Doom (32X) This was my first experience with Doom, and I loved it. 4. Alien vs. Predator (Jag) Groundbreaking for its time and loads of scary fun. 3. Doom (Jag version) Slightly edges out the 32X version. 2. Goldeneye 007 (N64) I LOVED playing this multiplayer but didn't care for the solo missions. 1. Doom (PS version) AWESOME versions of Doom and Doom II.

I'm not a big Console game fan. I play mostly PC games and the obvious NES Games. I have tried out other systems but i find the most enjoyment in PC Keyboard / Mouse FPS. It's faster and more accurate, even more so with the generation of the laser mouse. No more trying to turn and getting stabbed in the skull because the mouse ball wheels were dirty. My fav.s would be
Unreal Tournament Counter-Strike ( Condition Zero fan myself still ) UT 2004 Doom - over doom II because it wasn't 30 straight levels, it was broken up into bases Doom II - Played the doom games for hours, was even better when they enabled multipler Wolfenstein 3D - even before the age of the mouse and was keyboard only, outstanding classic game....Only game my father would play on the PC as well, he loved it
Thats about all i have to say about that for the momment

Duke Nukem 3D for Saturn was awesome, I only ever played the game a bit for Duke Nukem itself, but would always fire it up for Death Tank Zewi when friends came around. That game is insane multiplayer fun!

Since I've never played a FPS prior to 2004, my list is just for what I've played since 2004-present.
5. Medal of Honor: European Assault - Fun WW2 shooter. Better than Rising Sun and Frontline. 4. Far Cry Instincts: Evolution - For the best Start-from-scratch map editor EVER on a console. 3. Halo 2 - Genre defining multiplayer that broke new ground for all FPS's online for consoles. 4player per console split screen system link. 2. Halo 3 - The multiplayer and the addition of the Forge editor puts this one high up on the list. You can do many things on the Forge that you cannot do with FCIE regarding object manipulation. 1. Bioshock - The best FPS campaign/experience. Outstanding design and pacing. Gorgeous graphics. Smooth gameplay. I still need to play this one through a 2nd time to see the other ending. This one is an instant classic.

Goldeneye Perfect Dark Timesplitters 2 Deus Ex UT 2004
And Metroid Prime would be the greatest first person game of all time.

@phoenix1967:
That's pretty high praise for European Assault. Is it really that much better than Frontline? I didn't think they could top the Omaha Beach landing in that one. I've never played E.A., but I had played and beaten Frontline and played a bit of Rising Sun. Might have to look into it, it's X360 compatible after all.
@Shimra:
Wouldn't Deus Ex be more suited for an RPG list than a FPS? I wouldn't consider it any more of an FPS than say Oblivion played in 1st person would.

Deus Ex really is an RPG, you're right, but I dunno it feels enough like a FPS to be lumped in there. I guess I should have included it with Metroid Prime.
