Seeing a concentration camp or captured and fighting german soldiers in color really opens the eyes. In black and white it seems so far away. But color makes you realize it really only happened yesterday.

I think that the black and white can be just as if not more eye opening though. Sometimes that makes things seem more drastic. On the other hand it can make images less recogniseable. They already had color camera's in that day, but they were very very expensive, so not commonly used.

They do it with old cartoons and movies like laurel and hardy too.

They were of course colorized like Tynstar mentioned. Colorization was done for a long time, even into the 40's at least. The same can be said for photos....
