Cincinnati Reds - first professional baseball team.
Under new management.
Maybe they will actually make something of the team.

My thoughts exactly.  My team are the Brewers, too.  Let's hope they can turn it around now.  They didn't have a losing season last year but they did screw up the winning season bit!

I just can't get into baseball, it is so boring. Plus the season is about 60-70 games to long. I will watch the World Series if the Diamondbacks or Tigers are in it but that's it. I don't even remember what 2 teams where in the Series last year.

There is one and only one reason I am a fan of the Reds.
$5 seats.

Well, that and it was a great way to be outside and away from the cicadas a few years back.

your right. the season is way too long! it's hard to get hype every day for 162 games. it begins to drag and this is coming from a baseball nut. oh and the two teams were the Chicago White Sox & Houston Astros. The White Sox took the championship in a sweep.

Bah that is what makes baseball great, its a long race not a sprint like in football. You can have a bad stretch and it won't cost you a playoff spot like football. You can always redeem yourself. If you think its too long watch pro hoops, half amount of games half amount of players half amount intelligence half amount as fun to watch with double the prices at the box office. So if you went to half as many NBA games as you went to MLB games you'd pay as much or more. Good old thug NBA gotta love it!!

Sigh, Baseball Season. The best thing about baseball in Cincinnati is that Robert Castellini (the new owner) said in the first 90 seconds of his first press conference "Championship Baseball." Even if the Reds end up being terrible (and they probably will), it is still a cheap and fun thing to do in the summer.

And oddly enough, this year Cincinnati may care more about the off season for football than the baseball season. Will Carson be back in time? Will Chad do anything else that is really dumb? Find out in the next "All My Bengals."

"All My Bengals" name and concept property of Gary Burbank and the BBC.

Hooray... The A's got Frank Thomas to play first base. Yet another "cast off" to fill in at first  ::)

Maybe he will want to prove himself this year and will play great. But if he does that, surely he will leave for a better contract with the Yankees, Redsocks or somebody with money  >:(

Figured I would bump this, with all of the baseball going on, and with the NBA season coming to an end soon, this will probably be something even I talk about.

How about them D' Backs :o Brandon Webb is on fire!
And my Oakland A's are up and down, but after the all star break is normally when they kick it into high gear.

Still way too many games to be played though.

Are the Tiger for real?

Title: Re: Baseball Talk
Post by: Sauza12 on June 05, 2006, 07:41:07 AM
After the last 7 game stretch, I'm starting to believe not.  In 7 games against the Yankees and Red Sox, they went 2-5.  I went to the game yesterday and it was disgusting.

We went into the 8th down 5-3 (but still in it) and then proceeded to walk 5 batters and hit one, walking home 3 runs.  You can't do that against any team in the majors, let alone the fucking Red Sox.

At least they are still 2 and 1/2 games up on Chicago and still have the best record in baseball.  This upcoming series against the White Sox is crucial.

Title: Re: Baseball Talk
Post by: captain_nintendo on June 05, 2006, 10:15:46 AM
I think while the Tigers are good, ultimately, they will fall out of first place. Mostly due to the lack of vetern pitching. I could be wrong mind you, but I guess I see the Chi Sox taking first over.

Title: Re: Baseball Talk

Bonderman needs to be more consistant for them.  Even with the best record in the AL, I'll honestly be surprised if they even make the playoffs.

they are on pace to have 4 starters with 20 wins. I can't believe the way the Tigers are playing. anything can still happen but I think they will be in the race for the long haul. with the White Sox nipping at their heels they can't let up. I think it's keeping them sharp, they don't have any margin for error. if they ease up the White Sox will catch and pass them.

1984 vs. 2006

The 1984 Detroit Tigers were 57-27 at the All-Star break.
The 2006 Detroit Tigers are 54-25 currently.
We currently have 9 games to play before the All-Star break.

Title: Re: Baseball Talk
Post by: den68 on June 30, 2006, 05:01:44 AM
man it's hard to imagine the 06 Tigers being better than the 84 team. it would be a beautiful thing though.

it is starting to feel that way though. I remember watching games in 84 and just knowing they would win. this team is starting to get that aura. the one difference seems to be that the 84 Tigers would pounce on teams early, these Tigers seems to keep it close then bust it open in the late innings.

I went to the game Tuesday night where they faced Clemens with Phoenix and blittle313. it was 0-0 till the 7th when they got 2 on against Clemens. Houston goes to it's pen and bam, 3 runs, game over.

it's just great to have winning baseball back in Detroit.

I can't wait to see this weeks power rankings on ESPN.com.  They pretty much refuse to put the Tigers at number 1 even though they have had the best record in baseball for 2 months straight, except for one day.

I'm pretty sure that Boston will be at the no.1 slot with the White Sox at 2 and Detroit at 3.

I do have to admit, it would be hard to put anyone ahead of Boston right now.  12 straight.  Jesus Christ.

ESPN only cares about NY and Boston in baseball. The rest of us can rot as far as they care. It's hard to imagine them showing Brewers highlights first unless someone hits for the cycle or throws a no hitter. Maybe, then maybe they'd be first. Nah who am I kidding, Jeter would go 1 for 4 with a single an the Yankees would be first.

I have been an A's fan since 1985. Thanks in part to them broadcasting on a Prescott channel I barely got a signal for :)

The A.L. west looks pretty weak. I think they can pull it off. Hopefully they keep Zito around. I am sick of them trading off or not signing our top players  :hmm:

Title: Re: Baseball Talk
Post by: captain_nintendo on July 19, 2006, 06:39:07 PM
Well they traded away Hudson and Mulder because they couldnt afford to keep them. And why wait to lose them to free agency when you can get prospects and picks back for them. I am sure they A's heavily scouted the farm system of the Cardinals and the Braves before the trade. The A's are one of the best teams at scouting and developing talent in the Majors.

You kind of have to be  :(

Sorry, I have to go with the Minnesota Twins as far as drafting and developing.

Some current examples...
Johan Santana - Rule 5 draft pickup from the Astros if I remember right.
Francisco Liriano, Boof Bonser, Joe Nathan for A.J. Pierzynski from the Giants.
Joe Mauer - Drafted and brought up through the farm system.
Justin Morneau - Drafted and brought up through the farm system.
Torii Hunter - Drafted and brought up through the farm system.

Stats...
Santana - 3.00 ERA, 11-5, 152 Ks in 144 innings. (All-Star & WBC)
Liriano - 1.94 ERA, 11-2, 115 Ks in 102 innings. (All-Star, WBC, and up for ROY)
Bonser - 5.30 ERA, 2-2, 27 Ks in 35.2 innings. (Rookie Year)
Nathan - 1.58 ERA, 6-0, 18 for 19 saves, 58 Ks in 40 innings. (WBC)
Mauer - .377 AVG, .451 OBP, 49 RS, 48 RBI. (All-Star, Elected to WBC - declined.)
Morneau - .306 AVG, 25 HR, 78 RBI. (WBC)
Hunter - .269 AVG, 14 HR, 51 RS, 49 RBI. (Gold Glove 2001-2005)

Title: Re: Baseball Talk

I wont go into it, but the A's have had alot of talent drafted, developed and then moved away via free agency over the years. I would even go as far to say that they are the team this happens to the most.

Late 80's , they had 3 straight A.L. rookie of the year awards!
As far as pitching goes, recently.... Zito, Mulder and Hudson. All 3 are going to have long All-Star type careers. Not to mention a bunch of other talent they have popping up now. Hell the Dodgers have an A's prospect that was traded there this year, and is likely to be the N.L. rookie of the year.

I respect Minnesota because they are built along the same lines as the A's. Both teams are also "small market" teams that succeed through good farm systems and great moves by the GM's.

Screw you large market teams spending 100 million plus on salary ;)
