230 pounds is still an awful lot, unless you're 7 foot tall. Or made of pure muscle.

Good luck though.

I lift when I have the time, but lifting won't really help to much in losing pounds.  You need aerobic exercise to do that.  Try swimming or, if you think your knees are up to it, running.

Geez Arrr , maybe some of us men dont want to be skinny little wussys ?

When I was 230 I was solid as a rock at 6'4"
looking like a skeleton si not cool. On the other end of the spectrum though..... Being way overwieght sucks.

Picked up yet another hockey leauge to play in to shed a few more pounds.. (makes 2 leauges currently)

Good luck on the wieght loss wrldstrman... ;)
I suggest you do some cardio along with that lifting.
Also sit ups work great IMO.

You must be pretty darn tall or muscular not to look fat and be fat at 230.

How tall are you anyway?

I love lifting weights too.
I took almost 2 years off though.
I messed up my sholder and elbow benchpressing so cut back my wieght then stopped completely.
hen i got rid of my old bench weights and curling bars because they took up more space than i had to give in my room.

I just started consistantly using this machine we got from my uncle about a year ago. I don't really like it though because it is one of those pulley system type things.

I need to get another bench because i loved benchpressing and freeweigh is much better IMO.

As for all this talk of weight. Depending on your hieght and general physique you can wiegh more than someone else and still be in bter shape than them.
Having broad sholders or chest (ribcage size not fat or breast size mind you ;)) can add more weight to a person.

Mark is scared of fat people so don' t talk about them.

Also if the wind picks up some one tie Mark down. He might blow away.

Weightlifting is great for losing fat, muscles burn fat, the more you have the more you burn. Muscles burn fat all the time, 24 hours a day, if you put on 1 pound of muscle you are going to see big improvements in fat loss. Aerobic exercise only burns fat while you are doing it and for a little while after and is not nearly as effective at fat loss in my mind. And besides that, if you keep up the intensity, weightlifting is just as aerobic as most other activities most people consider "aerobic".

Of course if your whole goal is simply weight loss, starvation is the way to go. But then your body decides to use up your muscles first and you just end up with skin, bones and fat. Thats an overexageration I know, but the first sentance in this paragraph was funny. :)

As far as height and weight go I am 6'2" 210-215 pounds and I can see my stomach muscles (more or less). So being 6'4" and 230 doesn't sound too bad.

Arrr , I said in my post I was 6'4"
Thats Six foot 4 inches tall.
I am overwieght now , but before I had a son , I played hockey 4 times a week , worked out 3 times a week and did at least 500 sit ups a night.

But now I am lazy..... :-[ Starting to get the urge to work out again. I know I am heading in the right direction by playing in another hockey league.

And seriously...... NFL linebackers are 6'4" 245 - 255 and alot of them look as if they are chisled (look muscular)

Don't worry about it too much guys.
He is a cyclist after all.

Anyways didn't we go over this whole thing about weight to musculaer strength ratio last time weight lifting was brougt up?

You can technically be overweight for your height but the index used only takes into account fat not muscle.
And it is also for a specific "average" body type.
So nearly every person can have their own deviation from that chart.

For sure. Muscle does weigh more than fat. I remember being down to 215 pounds when I was 22 and when I started lifting wieghts I gained wieght. :o
Of course my arms got bigger , my legs got bigger ....You get the point.

So being "overwieght" isnt always a bad thing.

I'm 5'11" and about 250, which as I found out this weekend is too fat to ride the Millennium Force at Cedar Point.

my doctor also told me I'm obese.

I know I need to lose weight but I am very active. I play hockey once a week, bike a few times a week and do other things. I'm not a slug on the couch all the time.

but yeah, it's the sody pop that get's me. I eat pretty healthy, just can't give up the Dew.

yeah i dont understand the charts they use wonder if they relize muscle weighs more than fat..as far as my arms and legs go there really muscular it hard to even get enough skin pinched for a body fat measurement..but the mid section is a totally diffrent story...guess i never liked doing sit ups because when you work the arms chest or legs ypo can see your gains it also motivitates you to look in the mirror and see a big old pumped arm..plus I like the feeling (eventho a little concited) of standing behind the little guys looking at there abs in the mirrior and totally dwarfing them...I would rather keep my 20 inch guns and the gut then have a small waist line..but i guess if i get off my lazy behind i can have the abs to...i say this i chow down on a swiss roll ::)

I'm 5'10" and 185.  I haven't had a chance to hit the gym, in like two months and it's starting to bug me.  I swear to God I can actually feel myself getting weaker as the time goes by.

When I was going to the gym regularly (which was 5 times a week) I could put up around 260-270.  Now I don't think I could break 225.

I'm still pretty quick for a big guy. When I played softball this summer I got quite a few infield hits because the fielders thought they had all day to throw out the slow fat guy. They're watching their throw still in the air as I'm safely standing on 1st base.

I used to love to play softball..until I compound fractured my leg playing second base and now my leg looks like the hardware section .I enjoy going through metal detctors. |D

Actually, that's a different classification alltogether.  It's "morbidly obese."  Some of those people you are thinking of (like the lady whose skin became grafted to her couch because she didn't move for so long) are even beyond this morbidly obese classification, for which they have no name.  But yeah, to be obese, you don't have to be so fat that you are immobile.  You can still be quite active, really - just not healthy.

the weird thing was that the obesity threshhold was like 190 or so. that seems too damn thin to me.

I'm 6' and weigh about 215 now.  I've been the same weight (within 10lbs) for about 10 years now. When I got outta bootcamp and was down to 185 and looked like death - it took me about 2 years to get back over 200 and I worked out 5 days a week and ate like a madman.
When I was 16, I weighed about 240 but was lifting weights 6 days a week, taking supplements, and ran at least 2 miles every morning and afternoon.
Something about bad knees, bad back, bad hip - all from football - that makes it hard for me to do alot of exercising now.  Every time I get to the gym on a regular routine, I tear something up - last time was the left knee, again.
I'm classified as overweight/borderline obese.  What a fucking joke!  Ask Scott or Rick if I'm that big.  Well, Scott will say I'm a fatass but that's Scott for you |D

Might pick up a third hockey league to play in as well.  :-/

In anycase i am going to try and start using a friends weight bench. He has a strange work schedual though so i doubt it will work out.

What are you like two inches tall? I weigh 130 and I'm skinny as a rail. I mean if you gained ten pounds in three days you might have a problem but it's probably just your body trying to survive.

I need to get a membership to a gym.  I don't work at my company's corporate offices anymore where the gym was, so I haven't been to the gym in like 5 months.

I haven't gained any weight (I'm still at 187) but my muscles tone is fading slowly by the day.  That and I can't go up a flight of stairs without panting.

In high school, I was 220-230 and looked a little fat but was in great shape. Went to college, gained 40-50 pounds. Still not in bad shape, just heavier. Came back home after 3 semesters, worked at UPS, lost that 40-50 pounds. Got an easier job, right back on. It's tough trying to keep in shape when you work full time, have a wife and kid, and all of the chores around the house to do. So I'm trying to cut back slowly. Not cold turkey cutting out stuff, just having a little less every day. Plus, I'm hoping to lose some when my son gets running around and playing with me.

I haven't been "working out" just eating alot less(albiet still unhealthy) and doing all my crazy warehouse work.

But even working in the warehouse isn't taking the physical toll like it first was. I am getting too use to the type of lifting and moving i do there.

and wrldstrman if you plan on closing in on 400lbs benching you should try getting into the World Strongman competitions.
