Title: 2008 RFG Fantasy Football
Post by: TraderJake on July 23, 2008, 04:42:22 PM
Time to get that ball rolling. I imagine it'll be just like it has been in years before. If you're interested, make it known here.

    Oh yeah, I am interested.

What's this about? Can somebody please explain?

Title: Re: 2008 RFG Fantasy Football
Post by: TraderJake on July 31, 2008, 06:32:53 PM
Fantasy (American) Football is huge in the US. This is our RFG league, as hosted on yahoo.

Title: Re: 2008 RFG Fantasy Football
Post by: St0rmTK421 on August 01, 2008, 04:32:14 PM
Simply put, each person drafts a team of players, several at each position.  Although they don't play on the same team in real life, each player scores individual points each week based on how well they performed.  Add the total points your players get each week and compare it against your opponent's team to figure out who won.  American Football fantasy teams are big in the US, but there's also baseball and other fantasy sports as well.

Title: Re: 2008 RFG Fantasy Football
Post by: Sirgin on August 02, 2008, 04:01:54 AM
Am I a complete moron, but I think I still don't quite get it :(

Is this just an online football game or do you have to play football in real life?

Because if the second's the case, isn't it easy to fake your stats?

Title: Re: 2008 RFG Fantasy Football
Post by: TraderJake on August 02, 2008, 11:47:27 AM
No, what happens is that there is an autodraft of NFL players / defenses, and you earn points based on how well they perform. Each week you play another team, and the person with the most points wins.

Title: Re: 2008 RFG Fantasy Football
Post by: St0rmTK421 on August 03, 2008, 10:58:20 PM
When you "draft" real football players, you basically get to add their name to your fantasy roster.  When they play their real games for their real NFL teams each week, they put up stats.  The fastasy leagues use these real stats to tally up the fastasy points that the player earned for that week.  So you're getting points for how the players perform in real games.  It makes it interesting to watch live NFL games, because you find yourself rooting for players you normally wouldn't root for because you have them on your fantasy roster.

Don't worry sirgin... I don't get it either, and I'm American. Figure that one out.  :P ::)

Title: Re: 2008 RFG Fantasy Football
Post by: Sirgin on August 05, 2008, 11:42:11 AM
Aaaah, I get it now! Thanks, StormTK :)

I'm not going to enter in this though. I can't even watch those games, so it'd be silly making a fantasy roster of people I don't know.

Title: Re: 2008 RFG Fantasy Football
Post by: St0rmTK421 on August 05, 2008, 05:40:26 PM
Yeah, American Football is really only popular in the US.  The rest of the world watches regular football :)

Title: Re: 2008 RFG Fantasy Football
Post by: Sirgin on August 06, 2008, 05:30:19 AM
That's true :) Although I'm not a big fan of regular football, either. I'd much rather watch basketball, but I can't see the NBA matches neither :( (unless I'd pay for special TV)

Never really understood American football...but this is how I interpret it:

The 2 teams stand in front of each other.
They yell a bunch of nonsense.
They crush into each other.
The ball gets thrown from the back of the field towards the front.
The ball gets caught by a guy who just runs it over a line, while avoiding crazy people trying to ram him.

That's it :P

that's it in a nutshell.

sorry about the mix up on the link. that's the url you can use to get to the league page once you've joined. we've got 8 teams so far so it seems people have figured it out.

and we now have a full 12 team league. woo hoo!

btw - that first link I posted does work... but only after you've registered a team.

there's still a few more preseason games so I won't set the draft just yet. now is the time to go into the draft ranking and pick your preferences. you can leave it alone but I like to go in and at least exclude the guys I hate or I know are holding out or are injured.

Title: Re: 2008 RFG Fantasy Football
Post by: y2richie on August 22, 2008, 01:06:16 PM
I'm from the UK but I got into watching the NFL in 1988. Some friends from school went up the park and a friend rested the playing guide on the centre's back so he could read it easily LOL. He would shout at the wide receivers... "you run 10 yards then turn around" then at the cornerback "you follow him" LOL so funny to look back on. But hey, as Brits we made an effort to learn in our own time! And it was a rewarding experience. We got a junior team together, an amateur American coach and played a lot, lots of different positions (I loved playing running back the most). I rented tons and tons of those NFL archive films from my library to catch up on the history.

I was hooked for quite a few years then lost track of who's who in the league. So with the exception of a few players, I don't know many in the league or draft. BUT I have the luck of the (Fighting) Irish so expect some upsets before I sink to last place!! :D

Must keep check on when the draft is. This will be fun! :)

Title: Re: 2008 RFG Fantasy Football
Post by: captain_nintendo on August 27, 2008, 09:43:20 AM
When exactly is the draft?

Also, maybe I missed it? But what sort of draft are we doing?

Title: Re: 2008 RFG Fantasy Football
Post by: den68 on August 28, 2008, 02:46:30 PM
It will be an auto draft. I'll change our leagues draft status to "ready" after the final preseason games which are tomorrow. Our draft will most likely take place Saturday or Sunday.

First regular season game is Thursday September 4th.

Yep, looks as if Brady is done for the season. It also looks as if my fantasy team is done as well.

Post by: BadEnoughDude on September 08, 2008, 10:22:23 AM
It's a shame. Brady getting hurt is bad for everyone, not just his fantasy owners.

Even thought I know it's not possible, I'm holding the slightest bit of hope that they'll announce that he's fine and that he'll be playing again in 2 weeks. Coincidentally, this is the same bit of hope I reserve for finding a sealed Valkyrie Profile in the wild :-/

Noob question here but if I drag a RB to a WR position, will they only get points for receiving or will I get points for his run gains too? Don't know how it works on Yahoo.

Title: Re: 2008 RFG Fantasy Football
Post by: St0rmTK421 on September 10, 2008, 05:42:30 PM
You shouldn't be able to drag a RB to a WR position.  There are two WR/RB positions where you can stick either type of player in.  I'm pretty sure both score the same way, which is 1pt for 10 yards rushing, 1 pt for 10 yards receiving, and 6 for TDs.

Lost this week, and the season looks to be over.

I did the best I could with my #1 pick out for the season, and my #2 pick missing 5 games.

Each week is a struggle to find the right combo to at least have a chance.

Just wanted to note that the tie I had was utter bullshit. The game got moved back due to hurricane damage, and the points I lost would have given me the win.

Other then that, I lost 2 games by a combined total of 3 points. Hopefully next year my team won't suffer horrible injuries, because I plan on being back 8)

Congrats to everyone who made the playoffs.  Tim and I had really good teams this year, lucky us :)  My brother barely missed out on the playoffs.  For those who's season is already over, hope you had fun and we hope you will be back next year.  For everyone who's still in the hunt good luck (unless you're playing me of course).

Congragulations Seamar!

Seamar's Snakes won the 2008 RFG Fantasy Football, beating Akuma's Killers(my team) by 11 points in the final game.

Congrats Tim!   I lost by one point in the semifinals, otherwise it would have been you and me for the championship.  I'm already looking forward to next year!

It was an interesting year for sure. Some fantasy studs missed all or most of the season with injuries (Tom Brady, Carson Palmer), several didn't deliver the kind of points you'd expect (Ladainian Tomlinson, Randy Moss, Joseph Addai, Larry Johnson, Terrell Owens) and some flat out disappeared (Chad Johnson).

There were some relative unknowns that had big fantasy numbers this year (Deangelo Williams, Michael Turner, Leron McClain)

Good Stuff!

I agree Seamar should get an Awards: 08 Fantasy Football Winner and also you should delete mine it's outdated now. I will return next year to reclaim my title.

Ah, he didn't have the "General Ass Kicker" Award when I posted that.

The "RFG Football Ass Kicker" is just a custom title; anyone can put up whatever they want there. ;)
