Title: World Record Video Game Collection *UPDATE: For Sale!*
Post by: GrayGhost81 on December 26, 2013, 02:06:59 PM
Keep seeing stories about this gentleman, and there was a profile of him in the latest GameInformer.

http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/ny-mans-10-607-video-games-sets-guinness-record-2D11792439

Are he or the previous record holder, Richard Lecce, members of, or at least familiar with our site? :)

Not on the site, but community members. Also, there are people with more, but not sure what the standards are for Guinness.

Our own Am4zingGam3r's gotta be close to this guy's numbers...

My guess he is the highest total. Just the highest that will go public about it. Don't get me wrong still impressive.

Wow, I just had an epiphany.  I've just been collecting indiscriminately since I started almost two years, and have now amassed a collection of roughly 1000 games.  At the rate I'm going, I'll likely have 3-5 thousand in my collection by the time I'm the same age as this guy.  Every single one of my game shelves is overflowing to the point where I've had to resort to stacking games on the floor.  I still want to collect, but I think about half of my N64 collection alone is made up of useless sports titles.  I think it may be time for me to downsize a bit.  If nothing else, I can at least do away with the worthless sports games and the like.

But I digress.  Definitely a cool achievement to get into the Guinness Book of World Records for video game collecting.  Congrats to the new title holder.

You would think if you were gonna pose for this picture you would show off a bit and stage all your rare stuff haha.  The rarest thing I see is the boxed fm towns marty. But I suppose Maybe the award is showing off enough.

If Guinness includes variants he might be close to a complete NES set and that's it.

I saw a couple of headines popup on this but never read it before.  Funny part is this guy lives pretty close to me based on the article.  He's a bit younger than me but has a few more games.

Anyone else feel like this is just a stunt, and the reserve price will never get met?

Title: Re: World Record Video Game Collection *UPDATE: For Sale!*
Post by: Izret101 on June 07, 2014, 09:25:09 AM
Or the reserve price gets met and the winning person never pays.

EDIT
Reserves are stupid. I don't get why people don't just start the auction at the minimum amount they are willing to accept instead of pretending they are letting it go for a good price.

This particular auction is even worse. STARTS AT ONE DOLLAR! With a crazy stupid high reserve and a minimum bid increment of 250$s

He set the reserve price at eleventy billion dollars.

Reserve prices are set to where you only have to sell if you get a ridiculous price. It's just a publicity stunt if you ask me. Look how much press it has received.

Unfortunately (?) it's not a stunt.

I had the opportunity to chat at length with Mr. Thommason at CORGS-Con a few days ago.  Really, really nice guy.  There are severe medical issues with extended family, to the point that insurance coverage is pretty much used up and just the daily medication costs are beyond their means.  Mr. Thommason was originally thinking of using the collection to fund his retirement, but instead is assisting with his family.  The reason the collection's reserve is so high is not out of greed, but because it wouldn't make sense to sell unless it can get somewhere near what is needed to pay said bills.

Considering we bought some rather rare stuff from him for very, very low prices, this gentleman isn't exactly greedy.  I'd vouch for his character, if not for his expectations in this pursuit. :)

It's up to $230,000 now. I suspect that someone's pushing up the price just because they can. Yet, Reserve Price Not Yet Met...
Even if it were 12,000 games, that'd average close to $20/game. Even with consoles and sealed games mixed in, I'm not quite sure I'd value it at that.

What a feat.   I sincerely hope that he makes his goals.  Super happy to see this auction on Game Gavel, too.  I bet Mike Kennedy cried when it happened.  I also bet that Kennedy didn't charge him anything to do it.

Well, the bid was at $230,000 USD with 16 bids, but it now down to $90,251 with 15 bids.  Very curious (retracted bid?), so I checked the bidding history.  It doesn't show it, but one of the bidders looks familiar...

Well in one sense I am glad to hear that this is a legitimate auction, but it's a shame that he has to sell for that reason. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

Title: Re: World Record Video Game Collection *UPDATE: For Sale!*
Post by: techwizard on June 08, 2014, 03:02:44 PM
if that's the reason he's selling, he should say so in the auction. i'm sure he'd get more interest that way and a lot of "sympathy bids". it might also help with people who are questioning the motives and the reserve price

I read none of the news links and just caught slackurs post.
I kinda feel dickish now for bidding since i obviously would never have that kind of money to pony up.

Oh well at least i helped get closer to the reserve. Never going to get there unless there is competition amongst bidders.

Was contacted today. Apparently every high bidder who was above reserve has backed out.

Doug if your bid was serious you might still have a shot.

Wait - so...basically everything we said would come true did? Anyway to screen cap that email notification saying none of the post-reserve bidders wanted it?

I"d love to post that to Game-Rave's Facebook / Twitter feed...

I had a distinct feeling that this wouldn't bode well..and to be honest...not that impressed...nice guy & nice collection but too put my two cents in not impressed...John the "Sega Guy" (lives in Washington I believe) has quite a more impressive collection in my opinion.

I could screen cap on my phone instead if you want it in a tighter image.

Title: Re: World Record Video Game Collection *UPDATE: For Sale!*

"To be completely honest I put my bid in in the hopes of getting it closer to the reserve (while staying under). I assumed his reserve price would have been significantly lower than it was and knowing what he needs the money for and what I could realistically offer are vastly apart.

I apologize for bidding and feel bad that the people who did get up over the reserve price backed out. If he broke it down even to a system by system lots I think he could have a more realistic chance of moving it. But it is really just a ton of money for even top tier collectors to shell out."

To lazy to take another screen cap and edit it in paint.
Even my offer of ~98k was WAY more than i could even think about offering. Christ my collection now doesn't fit into my apartment and i have whittled it down to under 1k primarily DVD based games.

If i had 98k to spend i would be getting a house.

Well played and gentlemanly.

Also, for those that care, the seller has been having a meltdown at digitpress. Jason Wilson even stepped up to the plate. It's a frighteningly bizarre and crazy read. A situation that got out of control spirals out into a train wreck.

I am thankful for all of you after seeing what people were saying over there. I am perfectly happy without negativity and drama. Reading that forum felt like watching something on TLC...too much time and effort going into something completely negative, and I have said before and will always say that this site has always been the one place I have found on the internet not full of trolls and half-wits with giant online egos to stroke.

I admit, in life there needs to be a difference of opinion for any relationship to develop, or any progress to be made as a civilization, but the line is drawn with respect. We talk on here all the time about our opinions and we give each other tons of guff about what we believe, but it never turns into an attack on somebody for what they say. Respect is never lost from what I have seen here and I know I have learned a lot from those differences in opinions. Again...thank you guys for being above this type of mindless and useless drama, there is enough of it in life away from the internet as it is.

Title: Re: World Record Video Game Collection *UPDATE: For Sale!*
Post by: Izret101 on July 19, 2014, 09:05:19 PM
I think it was 750k Which if memory serves comes out to far more than if he were to part it out and sell it individually.
Which is pretty much never how selling lots works in my personal experience.
