Zero The Kamikaze Squirrel for the Mega Drive - AUS PAL.

I can't remember exactly what I paid but it was under £1 in a bundle of games for however much the bundle was.

Unfortunately I sold it thinking it would go for a fair amount, but it didn't. :( I think it was around £7.50 including postage.

I've got a couple of different ones.
The first is Vulture Attack for the 2600, bought it for 1.50.
The second is a table top arcade machine called Monster Maze 3D which no one had heard of before so that makes is quite rare, that one cost me $3.

Mine would be Secret of Evermore and Yoshi's Island for the SNES. Got them both at once for $5 each about three years ago, and each was boxed, complete, and mint. I've never found anything that old, cheap and complete in the wild since.

Now if I can only figure out what Super Weekend is actually worth...

Books @ $175 in the latest VGC. Who knows how accurate that is for such a rare cart, though.

Thanks for the info, I had heard of it going for $100-$200 on ebay, but those were all past auctions, nothing current that I could find.

Its just cool that it is a collector's item, not that it is worth x amount of $, for me anyway.  Usually I just collect standard release games, not rarities, so this is a great find for me.

Hands down, rarest thing I've come across out there in the wide wide world was my big TurboGrafx-16 find. (http://www.rfgeneration.com/forum/index.php?topic=7740.0)

TG16, TurboBooster, TurboTap, 3 controllers, TurboExpress w/ TV tuner, and 9 games... for $10. :)

Of course, if we're talking single items, reducing that to just the TurboExpress or something still makes it my rarest find.

I found a complete in the box Earthbound with 2 sealed n64 games and 3 sealed primal rage for sega genesis games and a bunch of other randoms.  The box of games was only 10$ and the best find I have found in a while.

A few weeks later I bought a sega genesis for 10$ and it came with a complete toe jam and earl and 10 or 15 other games.  I had a good month

Best find of mine-My Sears Video Arcade (Atari 2600) found it in a box next to somebodies trash in my grandparents neighborhood years ago- came with the system,2 joysticks,1 paddle controller (2 pads one hook up),1 Racing Controller (same as the paddle controller, and one weird joystick/twist stick/button combo controller thingy, and 20+games. Free and it worked first try, worked perfect after a good cleaning

A few years ago, I found Shining Force CD at a Book & Music Exchange. My first thoughts were "hoo boy, this is going to be expensive". I was preparing for sticker shock when I flipped it over, but I saw 4.95. I could barely contain my happiness as I took this up to the counter, but I expected them to pull something, like "no, this is actually $74.95. the sticker is just really old. Look, here's the 7." or something like that.

But it was honoured, and I walked out of Book & Music Exchange with a $5 Shining Force CD, complete - in very good condition, even with that little foam block that secures the disc.

Being without a Sega CD, I had to test it on my computer, and it worked great. A week later, I sent it off  as part of a trade for Panzer Dragoon Saga. Today, this gentleman is my fiancé. Funny how things work out. ^_^

Shining Force CD - $5
Priority Mail Shipping to California - another $5
having Shining Force CD come back attached to a wonderful guy - priceless :)

Streets of Rage 3 (complete - mint) - 2 euro

SoR 3 isn't that rare, but a lot of people in Europe want this game. On eBay it often sells for 60 - 70 euro.

If we're making jackets count me in, I went into a thrift a few years ago that had one game that’s it just one a flipped over SNES game picked it up thinking it was going to be junk and I find Mario RPG with a $.99 sticker on it.

As for rarest find I got an Atari Gameline CIB but it’s not really a game anymore.

The rarest game I’ve found is Bubble Bobble part 2.

My friend at the flea market picked up a sealed one for around the same price a few months ago.  This was after finding a like new Mega Man Legends 2 for $5 a few days prior.

Ha. I picked up a few of Megaman games with Tron Bonne including Legends 1 and 2. It looked like they JUST put out someones PS1 collection when I got there. Since I don't really collect for PS1 I picked the megaman titles up. I knew Tron was expensive so when I got home I was looking it up and to my surprise I saw what Mega Man Legends 2 was going for.  I also picked up Mega Man 8 and X4 but Tron Bonne is by far my rarest find in the wild.

I'm so glad I picked up Tron Bonne and the Mega Man Legends games many years ago.  I had played them after release and frankly I just couldn't get into them despite their charm.  Almost passed them up because even then they cost more than I would typically pay for a Playstation game, especially ones I wasn't in the mood to play.  (This is the par of the story where a sane person would forget about them and move on.)  But that silly collector's mentality (mental condition?) told me to bite since the price hadn't dropped in a few years, and sure enough, now I look them up and know I just wouldn't pay what they go for now.  Since then, I've come to appreciate Tron Bonne in particular.  Just a taste that had to be acquired for me.

So congrats!

World Series Baseball for 32X, complete and in amazing shape. I believe it was $3, about 7 years ago. I believe I flipped it shortly thereafter for the going rate at the time, which was $30. :(

My rarest find in the wild? My gamer wife!! :D

Also, it has been rare to find a good gaming collection site with a great community in the 'wilds' of the internet, but I found that a few years ago too. ;)

My rarest 'finds' were actually from friends looking out for and then selling things to me, so not really in the 'wild' in a sense; those include a sealed NIB Vectrex and over a dozen of the games also NIB, and my original Odyssey with games and the gun CIB, bought from the original owner.  I did pay fairly for them, cheaper than the market at the time but not quite 'cheap'...

Best traditional deals include NES Snow Bros and Little Samson for about $5 apiece, cart only, several years ago.

Little Samson cart on craigslist.  $75 for the lot that it was a part of but I'm pretty sure I can sell the rest of the stuff for at least $75.  So, free Little Samson!  It went straight to Duke and his nearly complete NES collection.

So far, Red Baron Flight Simulator for the TI-99/4A in a thrift store bin last year.  I know it's not from as popular a system as the NES, but I paid $0.75 and have yet to see an active listing or recent sale anywhere.  It's listed as extremely rare to the point that I have never even seen a pic of the cart online anywhere. Guess that means I should get it scanned into the database.

I'm still holding out hope for a super rare find in the wild. I guess the best deal I've been able to score was a CIB Vectrex in pristine condition, all of it's original packing foam intact and a plastic sleeve to cover it. It came with one extra game. I dealt the guy down to $110. Shortly thereafter, I got in some financial troubles and needed money quickly (for rent). I sold the system to a guy I shop from at a flea market for something like $160 + store credit. I would have preferred to have kept it, though.

I have said this before, but I am gonna mention it again because I recently traded it away.

I found Demon's Crest CIB for SNES in a pawn shop for $2.00. It was in excellent condition.  The weird thing is, this same pawn shop hardly ever has any retro games.  I recently traded Demons Crest for Final Fantasy III CIB, Battletoads CIB, and Lone Ranger CIB.  That pawn shop had about 40-50 CIB NES games that same day for $2.00 a piece, so I bought every one of them.  Included in them was Mega Man 5 CIB.  Oh, and FF III is for trade..........

I would have to say most of the boxed or new nes games I have found over the last year or so...but more importantly a CIB Menace Beach and CIB Panic Restaurant are probably some of the rare I found and bought.

Video game price charts says $6, it's like a R4 XD.

I grabbed that Freak Show game I mentioned in the small scores thread the other day, it seems relatively uncommon complete and seems to have a decent value for a old PC game(around $30), but's hard to gauge rarity on PC stuff.  I also grabbed a loose Mega Man Soccer for $2.39 the other day.

It's the only version even coming up, It's only ON the 2600 from what I can find. If that's for something else it might be a hack(which would explain the issues finding and pricing it):

It was produced on 5.25 if i recall correctly but also available through the romox  download station for a set price. They had 20 or 30 games that could be put on a rom chip in an atari 8 bit cart. It wasn't an original cart based title from Amiga but cart only if you went to the download station.

I think I should re-post I have a bunch of stuff that I have found:

Originally posted although not cheap but found CIB:
NES - Panic Restraunt, Bomberman II, Die hard, Menace Beach, Ducktales 2 originally just had the manual and cart my brother won on eBay cheap & we have a box, I found Rescue Rangers 2 CIB and basically got it free. I guess those might be the most expensive rares I found.

Semi Rares - not overly expensive - CIB Mint Uncharted Waters, Bible Buffet, Tecmo Cup Soccer with Manual.

These are probably other Rares I own - Atari 2600: Cakewalk - My dad got it a long time ago from a discount bin at his store, Malagai & Gauntlet won at a Auction for $25.00 a piece, Smurfs Save the Day I think for $5.00 on eBay, Berenstain Bears for $7.00 on eBay.  SNES - although I think highly sought after not really "rare" Earthbound with Guide, Zero The Kamikaze Squirrel, Mega Man X2, and Adventures of Batman & Robin.  I have a sealed Action 52 on Sega Genesis my brother bought off eBay a few years back for I think $30.00.  And we have quite an extensive PS1 rare or sought after library along with some Saturn stuff.  And lastly Spider-Man Web of Fire with Manual on 32x from eBay a while back for a cheap price my brother won it for.

Aero Fighters for $5 at the flea market. Sold it this year after my local store got in Sonic Wings for the S-Fami, which I got for $15.

My brother won them at an auction that his work was having and he pretty much was the only one that bid on them.

Oh and to note my brother lost the bid on Eli's ladder on Atari and bmx airmaster to his boss who already has gauntlet and malagai and 7 prototypes and yah he's rich.

Also my brother won aero fighters on SNES a while back for $30 on eBay I believe maybe chase the chuckwagon aka game gavel.

I really don't want to use the term "rare" to describe some of my finds, they're mostly just valuable:

Castlevania Dracula X & Tales of Destiny in a huge lot from a small yard sale I got for super cheap.
Conker's Bad Fur Day for 3 bucks from my local pawn shop.
Faria on NES for a mere 2 (or 3?) bucks from the Flea Market.

I spotted a N64 cart in a box of crap and it when I pulled it out it was Castlevania: LOD. I ended up paying like $2 for it because it was a junk shop and my friend that tagged along was jealous.

Similar thing happend in a pawnshop that usually only has crap in the SNES games, there was a copy of Super Mario RPG in there for $3.

For me, it wouldn't be a rare or pricey find in terms of value...but rather the method I obtained them that made it a "rare" find. During one summer in high school, I worked for a local petting zoo. They wanted to refurbish the attic of the building leading outside to display more indoor animals, so they took me away from my normal duties for a few days to clear out all the storage that had been up there from the previous owners. Most of it was shelving and old furniture from whatever business was there before the petting zoo bought the building, but way in the back of the attic hall, I found a pseudo "Break room" and there was a small TV connected to a SNES with the game Home Improvement inside it. The owner told me I could keep them, so I was happy to snag another SNES for my bedroom growing up...but man...Home Improvement was a terrible platformer...ha ha

When I picked it up I thought the price was a mistake I said to myself why are you out here and FFX is in the glass case?

The owner told me I could keep them, so I was happy to snag another SNES for my bedroom growing up...but man...Home Improvement was a terrible platformer...ha ha

Sounds like the time I found a Genesis with a copy of Ms. Pac-Man in it lying in a tote on the curb.

That might be the only time Minty and Dumpster have been used in the same sentence.

You guys have some pretty cool shit in this thread.

I picked up a Sharp NES TV for $30 "Broken" AKA needed a new pin connector.
Also got an N64, NES, and virtual boy all CIB for 50 cents, they came into goodwill when I worked there, I was the person pricing and I hid them and bought them when my shift is off...sorry hahaha

I'm going to change the definition of "rare" here in the sense that this was so incredibly random, it was one of my weirdest and rarest finds ever.

Standard flea market with the same vendors every week, hocking old VHS tapes, vases, etc. Old lady at the end of the row has no electronics, just that typical junk except I eye a stack of black cartridges. She has six 32X carts, no other video games, nothing. But 32X somehow. I bought them for around $8 and while they were all generally commons (Virtua Fighter, Virtua Racing, Mortal Kombat II for example), I did snag the Spirit Squadron and NFL Quarterback Clubs for my own 32X collection while trading the others.

I also got Madden Championship Edition for Genesis for $1 at a random game store once.

My rarest find in the wild that I actually found myself was my Ms. Pac-Man tabletop arcade, which was only three bucks at a community garage sale.  The rarest thing I have in my collection from the wild, though, is my copy of TMNT Tournament Fighters for NES that my sister found at a garage sale, along with 11 other games including the other three NES TMNT games, for a total of fifteen bucks.  That averaged out to a buck twenty five a game, but since she insisted on just giving me the games and wouldn't accept any money back, I essentially got it for free. :)

Radiant Silvergun (complete) $4

That, right there, is the score of a lifetime.

I don't own that many "rare" games, and most of the ones I do I either picked up as new releases, or bought used before they became known as rare.  Probably my best rare item score is the unlicensed Genesis shmup "Earth Defense" (or "The Earth Defend" if you believe the manual or title screen).  I snagged a CIB copy for something like $5 or $6 about 12 years ago.  I've never seen a copy in the wild since.  Second to that might be a CIB longbox copy of Raiden Project for PS1.  I paid $10 for it, if memory serves.

My rarest find that I picked up is either:

Boxed, mostly complete Power Glove at a garage sale for $3

or

Tengen Tetris, picked up at my local game shop for about market price.

Edit:

RarityGuide.com says that my actual rarest find in the wild is Mega Man 5, picked up from my friend at his yard/moving sale.

*facepalm* PLEASE don't use RarityGuide.com for a reference for anything. It's terrible, and their attempt at pricing is laughable.

If anything, please use reputable sites like Digit Press or NintendoAge. Digit Press says Tengen Tetris is rarer than Mega Man 5, but that may have been based on older findings. NintendoAge says they're about the same.

When I first began collecting, I too fell victim to the absurdity disguised as expertise of rarityguide.com. Then I found pricecharting.com and realized that RG hadn't been updated since the Clinton administration.

Even pricecharting can be way off sometimes, but I often still reference it in conjunction with other sites. Your best indicator of price IMO is looking up "sold" listings on eBay and taking an average of those sales. This often shows how much people are willing to pay for an item.

I consider auctions to be a better indicator than a BIN, even though I do BIN myself. The auctions give you a good idea of where a fixed price listing should be to get a better deal. Also most pricing sites never take condition into consideration.

Title: Re: Rarest find (In the wild)
Post by: techwizard on November 11, 2014, 04:35:16 PM
i usually check price charting first and then compare with ebay sold listings. rarely do i notice a huge difference in price between them, but pricecharting does seem to not quite catch all the copies that sold sometimes which can skew the price a bit. for the most part though it's fairly reliable.

one thing important to know with price charting is that you can look at the list of what auctions they use to get their actual average when you click to the actual game page. i almost never just take the average number they give me, i usually look at their sources too because sometimes the site glitches and only shows the most recent sale when there were quite a few others before it. plus you need to click on each one to get the CIB prices anyway, the main lists only show loose and sealed.

I disagree. Auctions are too heavily influenced by time and opportunity. BINs especially ones with Best Offer allow people to take the time to think or budget and negotiate with the seller. I think that offers a much better idea of anything that could be considered a "true" value of an item.

Title: Re: Rarest find (In the wild)
Post by: SirPsycho on November 11, 2014, 05:38:16 PM
The problem with Best offers is that you can't actually see what the offer was. It just says 'Best Offer Accepted'. To the price sites it'll still list it as a $50 item even if the best offer that was accepted was $30. The auction game is better spent on more expensive games, and its what I've been watching for some games on my Saturn list.

I'll see Shining Wisdom auctions selling for less than $80, almost every one of them, but every BIN is close to or north of $100 and because of the auction prices people rarely bite.

UPDATE: Armed with new knowledge, my rarest game owned/seen is Maxi-15.  I may have seen something more rare in Digital Press' museum cases, but I can't remember specifics.

*facepalm* PLEASE don't use RarityGuide.com for a reference for anything. It's terrible, and their attempt at pricing is laughable.

Well, NOW I know. Rarity is hard to nail down definitively, and I was looking for any sort of touchstone with which to make my judgment.  My initial picks were based on current market price, while Rarity Guide reminded me that I had found Mega Man 5 in the wild, as well.  However, even were I just to use my metric of price, determined by Price Charting, the current Price Charting value on Tengen Tetris is below $40!  Zen: Intergalactic Ninja, Baby Boomer, Tagin' Dragon, Death Race, Mega Man, Maxi-15, and Mega Man 5 all outstrip it in price, and all of these I've seen in the wild.  I purchased every one except Tagin' Dragon, and every one of them was seen at my local game shop except Mega Man 1 & 5, which I bought from my friend.

Rarity Guide is not really a good guide to rarity. Tengen Tetris is much harder to find than Mega Man V.

In my own experience, this has not proven to be true.  I've only seen Mega Man 5 once in the wild, at my friend's yard sale.  Yet, I've seen Tengen Tetris both at my local game shop and at Digital Press.  Now, sure, anecdotal evidence is to be taken with a grain of salt, but my own experience would lead me to believe Mega Man 5 (and Maxi-15) are more rare than Tengen Tetris.

"rarity" is extremely different from city to city. the only things that are truly rare are confirmed cases of low print runs. anything else is just uncommon in my opinion.

Central Florida / Orlando. The warehouse where the Cheetahmen carts were stored is somewhat nearby, so copies of Cheetahmen II tend to come up on Craigslist every once in a while. In fact, mine came from the son of a journalist who received a copy to review, who knowingly traded it in to a local Play 'N Trade "for someone else to enjoy", and it was subsequently marked with a generic $2.99 since they couldn't find it in the system (since he looked up Cheetamen II):

Its pretty hard to get rare items here in germany! The flee markets are full with turkish people who sell the same stupid stuff all the time and most of the privat persons are not selling old stuff either. The other problem is that the most second hand stores here in germany sell their stuff waaaaay too expensive and just have stuff from the ps2 era.

My rarest trophy wasnt that rare to be honest but i think it was waaaaaay to cheap. I got the whole .hack series vol 1-4 as ntsc version on german ebay for about 30 euro, so about 40 dollars.

I sympathize. I don't think I've ever seen anything good at a flea market in Metro Detroit.  There is a great big one in Romulus, but always present was a delta-bravo dealer who would go around, buy everything up (that was affordable), and kick it up past ebay prices.  I went three times and that was it.  Never walked out with anything but Legos for my kid.

Dixieland in Waterford isn't too bad, assuming you go during the summer when they have vendors set up outside.  Those are usually people just looking to get rid of stuff so their prices aren't terrible.  Just stay away from established vendors. They don't have any real reason to price things decently since they can let their stuff sit there forever.

I haven't been to Gibraltar since Taylor became a ghost town, but apparently my wife likes going to flea markets with me (which I didn't find out until this past summer after 18 years being together.  Weird) so this summer I think we're going to make a few trips out to Mt. Clemens to see what the outside vendors are like.  There is one other flea market that I could mention and there's a good chance you already know about it, but it's been my honey hole for years now so I'm reluctant to even mention it.

I've had a good run of hard to find games in the wild. Not sure what the rarest one is but here is my short list and where I found them.

MUSHA (GEN) $1 cart only at local garage sale, Westland, MI.

The Amazing Spiderman: Web of Fire (32X) $9.99 cart only, Troll And Toad Games & Comics London, KY.

Clay Fighter 63 1/3: Sculptor's Cut (N64) $3.99 cart only, Goodwill Canton, MI.

Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure (32X) $3.99 for loose cart and later sold separately $3.99 for box, manual and poster at local game store Destiny Games. Canton, MI.

I am not too up-to-date on the number of copies for each of those, but I would think it has to be Sculptor's Cut. Once my Company finished closing the Blockbuster stores, anything from there shot up in value. It was also a very limited run by intention, where I don't think the others were as limited.

Found my sculptor's cut in a Gamestop back in the day, the sticker on it was for the original clayfighter 63 1/3 at $4.99. Aside from a lot of my rare 'cube stuff that I bought in the bargain bin back in high school, that 64 game might be one of the best buys I have ever made.

Yeah, I found a Jaguar back in 2001 at a pawn shop, totally complete in box.  That, and a JVC X'Eye, console only at the same pawn shop.  Those 2 things comprise probably my best, and most rare item finds in the wild.

@RazorKnuckles - MUSHA for $1?  Can I just say that you suck?  :slick:

yes ... they said they were going to throw them away if I didn't ... the store is a Christian-run resale store and they weren't going to sell it because of Adult content ... and I'm really good friends with the owner.

the image isn't really good I just took them with a tablet.

  I can't tell what they are.

It's not MUSHA for $1, but I was happy to find a Dragon Fighter at a Flea Market for $20.

CIB Illusion of Gaia a long time ago for 20 bucks.

Too bad my parents threw away everything but the dang game.

The rarest in the wild find that I've had is probably a three way tie between my: Sharp NES TV (for $50), Bubble Bobble part 2 (a good friend gave it to me, he found it for $2), and Aero Fighters (in a lot for $70). I've had a few other good finds but I think those are the rarest.

My rarest find actually happened just two months ago. I don't even remember why, but I was headed out to a city that I don't go to very often as it's out of my way. I didn't intend to stop at the local game exchange store on the way home but as I was passing it I made a last minute decision and pulled in. Low and behold I found the only copy of Suikoden II I've ever seen in the wild, and in good condition. I paid $135 for it but from the searching I did online while in the store that wasn't really a rip-off price, so I was pretty stoked about it.

Suikoden II is a brilliant game.

Yeah, I played the first and loved it. I've heard the second one is better, which is hard to fathom, but I've heard it enough to not question it. Though some may not consider that price a "deal," I would disagree. To me, a deal is any price you pay that you are very comfortable with for something you really want. I paid $90 for my copy a few years ago, at that time $120 was the average. In my eyes, one good game was worth buying compared to taking a risk on two new games that are unproven and possibly bad.

Wow, that's awesome you got a copy for less than $100. And yeah, I don't consider my find a deal by any means, but I figured that if I ever found a copy that was about what it was going to be priced at. So in the end I didn't feel ripped off. I've had purchases I've regretted due to post-purchase price shock before, but that didn't happen this time thankfully.

Can't believe I haven't posted in here yet. Some of the harder to find things I've found in the wild over the years have already been sold off at this point I think.

JVC X'eye with all JVC parts priced like a Genesis
CIB Jaguar with nice cardboard insert
Tengen Tetris that was priced like Nintendo Tetris
Virtual Boy in Blockbuster case with most of the library with manuals

I've had 2 big, rare finds.

First, from 2012: Aero Fighters missing manual for $18 from a local flea market.

And second (and even bigger) from 2015: legit Stadium Events for $120 from a local toy show (Guy thought it was a pal cart / didn't know what he had).

Also got a Hagane manual and two Stunt Racer 64 manuals for $3 each at the same toy show.

There are some really nice finds listed here.  I am impressed.  My rarest finds for cheap would probably be Tagin' Dragon for $5 and Chubby Cherub for either $5 or $10.... I can't remember which of the two prices it was.

3.99 for persona 1, complete in box mint condition.

10 dollar for suikoden II (saw how rare it is decided to hit up some pawn shops and low and behold I found it first try..)

5 dollars for eihander

5 dollars for bayonetta 2

7 dollars each for great condition with box legend of zelda and complete in box with manual zelda II the adventure of link.  They didn't even put stickers on them, a paperclip with the prices stuck on the corner.

5 dollars each for complete in box with manual great condition Mario party 2, 3, super smash bros, around 7 years ago on Craigslist, didn't expect them to come in boxes... Sold mario party 2 and 3 for 120 each a few months ago.

not games but got 2 simpsons pop at a thrift shop this year (4.99) ... they weren't really pretty so I didn't want to get them, then decided to check them out on ebay, going for 130-150+. Bought them and sold off ebay for around 100+ each.

Edit: bought clayfighter sculptor's cut for 5 dollars 9 years ago... Didn't know the price shot up by so much...  Thank you new found site and knowledgeable members of the community.

Edit 2: Also found out the Flintstones the surprise at dinosaur peak is a rare game... Got it for 4.50 in 2011...

There have been others, but I guess those are the most notable ones.

Joining this forum and reading everyone post has made me richer... Got quite the rush when I realized the value of those two games...

Apparently this I paid $6 for and wasn't aware it was like an $80+, Digital Press R6 until tonight:

Like, the cheapest sold listing I could find for a loose cart was something like $78 and they went up from there.

I also have Radical Rex (another R6) but it's apparently not nearly as sought after so it only goes for around $15.

Well, I have a new contender to replace my $5 Aero Fighters (SNES).  Let's just say I paid about 5% of actual value.

My rarest find in the wild has been changed now to this find I had this summer at a garage sale down the street from my house.

He had 2 systems and about 18 games.  I only had 25 on me so I talked him into 1 system and 5 games for 25.

I almost cried when I got it back to my car. LOL
