Title: Wii U Launch
Post by: Duke.Togo on September 13, 2012, 10:13:55 AM
So the Wii U will be out on November 18th, with a $300 price point for the basic setup, and $350 for the "deluxe" set. The Nintendo direct had a couple surprises in it, with Bayonetta 2 being the most interesting bit for me.

So the release date is pretty expected, but what do you guys think of the price? Personally, I'm going to scrape up pennies for the deluxe set (hopefully at launch). Anyone else in on day one?

I bought the Gamecube on launch day, I waited in line for hours for the Wii, I will be there to get my Wii U on the 18th.  The Deluxe set most likely.  Time to start saving for it!

I'm going to pass. Nothing has wowed me enough to spring for it on day 1.  If I was to get one, I would definitely get the "deluxe" set, though.

I wish I was in town to do so myself. I looked on Amazon and I don't see a preorder yet :(

I totally called the price point on the system. I had a feeling, all entities considered (system itself, Gamepad being AT LEAST $100, NintendoLand at least a $50 value) that it would be somewhere in the $300-$350 range. When you're good, you're good :)

I'll most likely preorder the Deluxe version since you are getting the most for your money on that deal, but it's not going to be right now. Too many other things to focus on at the moment. :-/

I think it is a good price point but I will not be getting one. Maybe if the wife wants one I would buy one but I dont think that will happen. Adam are you pre-ordering the 500 Limited Edition version I told you about?

That is just a placeholder price because they have no idea how much they will be yet.

And, yes, the gold Club Nintendo $500 LE is mine!

Glad you got one. When I saw how few they are making I figured you would want one.

Ok that makes sense. Makes me rest a little easier now. Thanks! I'll probably get the deluxe.

What does the launch line-up look like?

Title: Re: Wii U Launch

What does the launch line-up look like?

Decent to strong, depending on your tastes. It's all about Mario (NSMBWU) for me but some of the other games looks fairly entertaining. The deluxe pack-in ("Nintendoland") doesn't look to be as ground-breaking as Wii Sports was, but as a tech-demo, I won't dismiss it either. I wouldn't mind throwing the new Rayman game in my basket as well. The demo I saw looked really, really fun. Then there's the handful of typical Wii "sing-along" games I could just about pass right on by.

And yeah, the price point sounds about right. I can't see what the point would be going for the $300 configurations when you get some pretty good "extras" for the extra $50 (charger, pack-in, digital download points, etc.). I'm also intrigued what they're doing with the TVii setup - being able to search across different providers for your favorite shows and consolidating all TV control into one device is a good idea.

I haven't purchased a system at launch since the Sega CD but I might just have to get this one out of the gate. As I mentioned in the diary thread, my current Wii is suffering from a bad disk drive so at the very least, this will be its replacement. And besides, the Wii is the only system my girlfriend likes to play when we do game nights (save for trivia games and Portal 2 on the PS3.)

I'm still curious to see how my Wii downloads will transfer to the Wii U or if they're revamping the way online works.

I'll be in for a Deluxe Bundle. Super happy to see Nintendo Land included their. My days off just happen to fall on November 18th and 19th so I can see A LOT of Wii U getting played those days with probably my nephews popping in on Sunday to check it out and help me try out some of the multiplayer games with the maximum amount of players.

I'll probably grab one more game with it, just havnt decided which one yet. Pikmin 3, LEGO City Undercover and The Wonderful 101 all look great to me, my wife/son might push me towards NSMBU though. Also interested in grabbing Batman AC and Tank Tank Tank, but I'll probably wait until they price drop a bit first. And we will most certainly get Skylanders Giants, but it'll probably stay in the closet until X-Mas time for my boy.

I've heard that Amazon and NOA have had a feud because of Amazon receiving excessive amounts of 3DS returns due to faulty hardware.  So, it seems that Amazon themselves won't directly be selling the hardware.

I just noticed some of the games are listed as $99.99.  Really?

Those are just placeholder prices.  The games are supposed to range from $40-60, and I'm going to assume nearly all of them will be $60.

nope:( They have also confirmed there won't be online multiplayer for Pikmin 3.  If you haven't played the MP on Pikmin 2, it's amazing.  I was really hoping for online MP in 3, but what are you gonna do?

No WiiU for me.  At least not at launch.  Too many details that are really important to me are still too sketchy/unclear.

OH GOD!! I'm having horrible flashbacks to obtaining the steelbook for Mortal Kombat for Izret. Futureshop.ca is hands down the worst online shopping service I have ever been a part of. Even for something cool like that I'm gonna refuse to shop there.

@wildbil - I'm under the impression that Pikmin 3 is a launch title. The guy at the til this morning when I pre-ordered my Deluxe Wii U Bundle even had it in his system as Nov.18. And it does have co-op multi-player during the story's campaign apparently.

I preordered the Deluxe today, and not 15 minutes after I did so, Gamestop cut off the preorders for it. Glad I did that now.  8)

Plus, it seems as though Amazon has also cut off preorders for it as well. It's the Wii launch all over again.

Grrrr. Figures, I just got back into town tonight.

I'm going to try my local Gamestop tomorrow to see if I can still squeak in, but if not my Dad is a manager at a retail joint, so I'll have to go that route.

i didn't realise the pre-orders for the deluxe edition would run out that fast, i'm going first thing tomorrow to pre-order mine then. it doesn't look like they've stopped up here yet. i'm just glad i have enough money available for the deposit, my original plan was to wait until next friday when i get paid but i should be able to do the $50 no problem.

anyone in canada able to confirm if they're still available in many places? i have 3 EB games to choose from locally, hopefully one of them will have it.

edit: looks like canada's pre-orders only started on the 14th, so i should be able to grab one i hope. also from what i've read gamestop is nearly sold out across the entire US.

The guy that I talked to at EB Games said they started taking order on the 14th too. He also told me they basic bundle was all gone and only deluxes were still up for grabs.

Nintendo is so annoying to cheapskates like myself.

I was just in a store today. A bunch of copies of Xenoblade Chronicles, Last Story and Pandora's Tower. All at €40-45. I do want these games, but not at those prices, damnit!

It's also stupid when something says "Limited edition" (the latest Zelda game) and the store has 30-40 copies sitting there. And this whole Wii section is hidden away somewhere next to CD's. ;D I wonder who buys those games anymore. Hardly anyone, I recon. Maybe in a few months they'll get so desperate to get rid of their stock that they'll cut the price massively or take a loss. The day those games hit €15, I'm in!

EDIT: Pandora's Tower wasn't even released in the US? Lol, random.

I'm planning to pick up my first couple games by grabbing titles that I doubt will fall in price for a very long time. There are quite a few launch titles I want, but I'm confident most of them will drop a lot in a relatively short time though and I can grab them later on the cheap.

:( no Pandora's Tower for us either :( I still need to dig into my Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story though. Other than Nintendo Land, The Last Story will probably be the first game I play on my Wii U.

One thing is on my mind... it's great that Wii games can be played on the Wii U... but what about games that supported Wi-Fi? I learnt when changing Wii consoles you can't copy any saves of games that supported Wi-Fi. Will it be the same story again with the Wii U? I can't be bothered playing those games over again for a 3rd time.

Nintendo says you can import your Wii VC games, so it reallly makes me wonder if save files will also be included.

I'm pretty doubtful they'll let you transfer your saves.  When I moved my games from my DSi to my 3DS, the saves didn't carry over.

There might be a chance that I might be able to get this after launch but at the moment, it is the case of finding more info regarding the system and the type of games that appeal to me that from the looks of things so far doesn't seem to be many. Also whether you can disable that Miiverse thingy since there doesn't seem to be anything regarding disabling it (except maybe when you're not connected online) not everyone wants to know their gaming business especially when you're a poor player which is a bit worrying.

Besides Nintendo games where I come from are quite expensive e.g. often see Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario Bros. used for more or less the same price what I paid new years ago and in the case of both the N64 and the Gamecube eras not easy to find either. The price of Wii games (not the cheap shovelware, the quality stuff) doesn't seem to be coming down very much when compared to the PS3/360 games. On them systems, it can be dropped to half price or even more after a couple to few months (sometimes I've known games to drop in price within a week or two) while with the Nintendo stuff it is only a tiny bit less.

it's not only your area, that's just how nintendo prices things, they rarely drop in price at retail for first party titles. though you should be able to get the Nintendo Selects titles for a lot cheaper than original release if you're ok with the different cover design. ds games though you would just have to get lucky...best option would be try something like craigslist, or thrift stores/garage sales.

as for the Wii-U launch titles i'm actually pretty happy with the lineup, it's much better than most console's launch lineups have been.

Not having saves transfer over from the Wii to the Wii U just means I can play some of those old Wii games again. Depending on how few and far between game releases are, I can play catch-up pretty easily. This is provided I can drag myself away from Team Fortress 2 long enough to do so...again (I'm addicted to that game again).

I remember waiting outside Best Buy for about 12 hours to get my Wii, it was Thanksgiving, and my birthday is in December so this was my gift from my dad he said he would give me money for the Wii I just have to find one. People drove up from New York to try and get one. They only got 13 in. Some guy even sold his ticket in line to someone for $50

As for the Wii U launch, I don't have enough extra cash to shell out $350 and still have money to buy xmas gifts. I might be able to grab it in January. At least by then I could probably get some used games that kids get bored of after the holidays

I just wanted to let everyone know, I went to Walmart yesterday and saw signs hanging up stating that you could reserve the Wii U deluxe bundle and put it on layaway.  I figured they were out, but when I asked the girl in the layaway department, she said they're still available until her manager tells her to not take any more reserves.  She also told me a guy walked in a few days earlier and wanted reserve six of them.  I managed to get one, just thought I would let everybody that is still looking for it know.

I might grab one.
I would though like to put the new Wii U in my car and fiberglass a case on my steering wheel to slide the touch screen pad in and out. It would def be cool.

When I first saw that controller I immediately thought of the the Xbox controller.

I read somewhere that they won't be available at launch. But I guess that doesn't really matter because most, if not all, launch titles exploit the advantages of the game pad.

Wow, never thought I'd see the CEO of a video game company do an unboxing video. And he did it with a remarkable degree of dignity, which is very rare in the YouTube video-game-console-unboxing genre. What a sad buncha geeks, right guys?  ;)

He even whipped out some white gloves to keep the thing from getting all oiled up with fingerprints. I think he even made a reference to Mario when he was putting them on. That's class right there, my friends...

Its even better with the translated closed captioning. It makes absolutely no sense, but live ammunition, beer game pad, bringing the game pad to a nuclear power plant, and him being a badass were mentioned.

Here's a pic of the NSMBU world map from the instruction manual.  This map looks eerily familiar.....Where have I seen it before.....?

I saw a demo of the NSMBU in Best Buy, and nothing looks quite like Nintendo visuals.  The demo was in HD on a nice TV, and made it look so incredible that I'm considering buying a Wii U just to play it.

Yep, my local Gamestop and Walmart have demos up and I plan on getting NSMBU.  I have a 5 year old son and a wife, and we enjoy playing New Super Mario Bros Wii, so this is a no brainer for me.

I just found out that I can pick up my Wii U from my local Walmart at midnight on the 17th, well technically it would be the 18th.  Anyone else's Walmart doing this?  I wonder if Gamestop is doing thisor will be open at midnight.  I pre ordered Black Ops 2 from Gamestop, and I want to pick it up after I get my Wii U from Wal-Mart.  Anyone have any info?

Yeah, you shouldn't shop at Wal-Mart

Why is that?  Every other place I checked were sold out of pre orders, but Walmart was there for me.

Wow, I just found out my local Gamestop isn't doing a midnight launch for the Wii U.  Now I'm glad I couldn't get a preordered deluxe model from them.  I guess it was fate that I got one preordered at Wal-Mart and they're doing a midnight launch.  I know to some people, there isn't much of a difference in time between midnight, and whatever time Gamestop opens on Sundays, but to me it means a lot.  Now I just hope Wal-Mart puts out the Wii U games for sale at midnight also.  I just canceled my Black Ops II preorder at Gamestop because of this.

I have to work until 7am so I can't pick mine up until the morning. Otherwise I would have liked to do a midnight event myself.

Yeah, NSMBU and Black Ops II for me.  I just recently got back into FPS's after a 14 year hiatus.  I originally played Goldeneye on the N64 and didn't play another FPS until the remake for the Wii.  After playing it, I got into Call of Duty Black Ops and MW3.  I mostly just play for the online experience.  I know all these younger kids think they're awesome at first person shooters, because they play Call of Duty, but I was spanking local multiplayer ass on Goldeneye probably before they were born.  Also, I don't know if anyone has seen it yet, but there's a new nunchuck accessory for Epic Mickey 2.  It looks like a paintbrush.  I bought a similar accessory when Epic Mickey came out, and they look identical, except the new one has a glowing tip that glows green or blue, depending on whether you use paint or thinner in the game.

Whelp, gonna pay off the rest of the layaway balance later today.

And then I'll ask if that particular Wal-Mart will be having a midnight release, and if, as someone who put one on layaway, I get first dibs before everyone else.

And if the answer is "yes," I'm gonna do something I swore I would never do: wait in line in the middle of the night to pick up a friggin' game console.

I guess there's a first time for everything.

And I'll betcha there will be some really interesting folks waiting in that line...

i just finished paying off my EB Games pre-order of this too, going to get mine first thing sunday morning. i'm a half hour drive from the nearest EB, or an hour bus ride if i can't get a ride there (i don't have my license), so a midnight release really isn't worth it to me. i'm not one for staying up all night, so at most i would only play it an hour or so and then just be so tired i would probably sleep a good chunk of the next day away.

also my family said EB games called yesterday to say that the Saturday, 17th, Wii-U event was pushed back to sunday. i asked them if they remember more clearly what the caller said, because i hadn't heard of this "event", and they were vague about it. my assumption is that they were planning a midnight release and decided not to for some reason, but i don't really know. when i was there paying it off today (before i heard about this phone call), i asked if they were opening early on sunday for the wii-u release and they said they would be opening about an hour early, with no mention of any saturday event being pushed back. any other canadians with an EB Games Wii-U preorder know anything about this?

Okay thanks.  I remember hearing something about that.  I also just remembered that the WiiU gamepad has a built in camera and you can take a picture of yourself, then it will generate a Mii from your picture.  I have a 3DS and heard that it does something similar, but I've never tried it.

After I got my Wii U, I had to go to Kmart to get NSMBU because my Wal-Mart said they wouldn't have the games out until tomorrow.  My local Kmart said they only got two basic Wii Us in and sold both of them.  Kmart didn't have Black Ops II, so I had to go to Gamestop to get it.  Gamestop just told me I was about to get a call for a Wii U system, because I was at the top of the waiting list and a lot of preorders never got picked up.  I told them to call the next guy and cancel it.

I'm currently typing this from my WiiU! The browser is a bit weird for my taste- Facebook for example is the mobile version and the system doesnt support Flash. It's also a bit jarring to have the same image on the Gamepad and your TV, almost defeats the purpose of having your TV on.

Also, for some odd reason there's no Ethernet port on the system. That could potentially be a very bad move on Nintendo's part...

Anyone know if they have a rank that's higher than Gold for trohpies?

Finally spent some time on NSMBU. Whipped through the first level and then decided to check out the challenges. The challenges are a lot of fun, and are something I hope will extend the life of the game for me. I got a gold on several fairly easily, but there are some that are gonna take me some time to figure out me thinks.

Yeah, me and my wife played NSMBU.  We stopped at the Forrest part of the map.  I tried a few challenges and really enjoyed them.  I've also recently read that NSMBU will be getting DLC in the future.  I also played Black Ops II with my son.  He used the gamepad and I used the Classic Controller Pro.  We had a blast.  The gamepad is okay for Black Ops II, but I play better with the CCP.  I plan on getting the Wii U pro controller soon.  I haven't even tried Nintendoland yet.  Hey does anyone know if you can change your Nintendo network id?  When I was playing Black Ops II my name on the game was the same as my Nintendo network id  I was really hoping I could change it.

I made the clerk go and get me another console because the box he first presented me with had a pretty hefty ding in it :D

I posted this in another thread because I thought it was this one.

It was not.

Make it stop! Oh man, watching that box brutality is too much for me.

I've got everything down to the foam wrapping neatly folded back in the box.

same here lol, i try to save everything except the shrink wrap plastic that protects parts of the console from dust. those just crumple and cling to themselves way too much to have any point in saving them. i do save the clingy foam, all the bags, and the twist ties though.

Had my nephews over and some other family and friends tonight. After prying the kids off the TMNT Arcade Machine, I convinced them to try the Wii U with me. They really didnt seem that interested in it........... until I got them to try one game on Nintendo Land. After that we were all fighting to get on the controllers for the next match because there were way more than 5 of us there :)

So many great multiplayer games. Just need to get myself 2 more Motion + pads now though since I only have two of those and two regular Wii Remotes.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that saves the twist ties, foam, etc and puts it back in the box.  My wife thinks I'm crazy.

For like 3 dollars, you get get a spool of a couple hundred feet in the Lowes/Home Depot garden department.

Hey, has anyone bought any accessories such as screen protectors, stylus's, gamepad protectors, etc?  I.saw a lot of cool ones by pdp at Wal-Mart and thought of getting some.  Any recommendations?

As an almost completely solitary, asocial gamer, the Wii U has gotten me thinking of actually inviting a few friends over to play some group games. I'm even getting a WiFi setup going in my house for the thing. And as soon as that's done, you're more than welcome to drop in if you feel so inclined.

I'm lookin' to grab another game pad, myself... but I'm not in a big hurry to get it. Should a good deal come along, I'll definitely snag one. I'll also grab a classic controller while I'm at it.

I already have a stylus for my pad, But I'm definitely gonna get me a screen protector film for it. It didn't even occur to me to get a screen protector until I was scribbling my stylus across the pad.

I also wonder if there's a grip-style protector out there. While the game pad's ergonomics are better than expected, I could stand to experience less cramping. Hopefully, PDP will release a Nerf type protector cover so I can keep it real.

Yeah, NERF and pdp has rubber covers for the game pad, if that is what you are talking about.  I prefer the look of the pdp, but I've never actually used one.  The pdp ones also come in red, blue, black, and pink.  My local Wal-Mart has some, but they're out of black, and that's the one I want.  The red one looks really nice too.  Hey, did every deluxe Wii U console come with the digital download promotion?  I haven't even checked mine.  How long does the promotion last, and what exactly is it?

I'm pretty sure the digital download promotion was included in all deluxe sets.

Okay thanks Fleach.   I see it doesn't start until December, but it counts if you download from the eshop now.  Speaking of eshop, has anyone downloaded from there yet?

I was considering downloading from the eshop, but I don't think I will. I like to own physical copies of games.

Virtual Console (if Wii U has it) on the other hand, is a different story.

I bought Mega Man 9 and nothing else on my Wii, and I've never bought any DLC or Downloadable games on my 360, PS3 or 3DS. Dont see myself starting any time soon either. Just doesnt appeal to me in the least.

Ha!  I bought Mega Man 9 and 10 on my Wii.  I feel the same way about it as you guys do.  As a collector, I prefer the physical media to digital.  I will, however download virtual console stuff.  Does anyone else find it annoying that a lot of publishers have done away with physical manuals?

i'll buy dlc for a game i really love, or if it just looks like something i'm really interested in trying. that doesn't add up to a whole lot of dlc for me though, and i'll never buy any aesthetic dlc like costume packs or weapon skins. of course if a special edition i bought comes with dlc i'll gladly play it. as for complete games, i've bought a few on steam in the past, but now unless i get it as a gift i'm not likely to buy from steam because i know i'll eventually end up getting a physical copy anyway. the only exception that applies to all digital stores are games only available as downloads, like Journey on PSN was until the collector's edition came out, or Minecraft on PC.

Does anyone else find it annoying that a lot of publishers have done away with physical manuals?

yes and no, i miss some aspects of them like a little extra background story, and an easy way to familiarize yourself with the controls. at the same time though, 90% of games these days explain exactly how to do everything as you come across new abilities and situations in-game. and with less limits in ways to tell the story in a game, it's not so important to have that introduction or background in the manual. so even though it's not the same, games these days definitely don't need manuals.

A lot of the games I like end up with DLC on disc if I wait long enough. Batman, Street Fighter, LA Noire, etc. Just have to be patient and I get most of the downloadables in physical form for much cheaper in the end.

Well no WiiU for me..... the shop I had it preordered now won't take my 2 phones in trade claiming it's showing previous owners on a database. Both my phones were I fact brand new to me on release week and I've got emails to prove it but they won't listen. Looks like I'm never going in there again..... :-(

have gone higher and spoken to head office. they gave all the usual cack about company policy and wont change their minds no matter what.
its both theirs and my loss as i cant get the same amount as they were offering anywhere else and of course they cant sell them but on the other side their Wii U wasnt the cheapest and they have rung me today to say they havent got enought coming anyway so would i take another bundle. which would of course have been no.

think im just going to wait for a bit or maybe get a 3DS XL instead

Sorry, to hear that.  For some reason, Gamestop has some Wii U systems available in my area.  I don't know if people who pre ordered changed their minds or what.  I was on the waiting list after the preorders were all taken up.  The Sunday morning that the Wii U was released they called and said mine was available, but I already bought one from Wal-Mart.  Hey has anyone tried Epic Mickey 2?

It's added some welcome thickness at the ends, making cramping less of a problem.

I gravitated towards the Nerf line of console & handheld protectors partly because I'm a Nerf nerd, and I really like the look of them. And partly because I figured, with all that foam, they'd provide superior shock absorption in the event of droppage. I just didn't see that with the hard plastic protectors, and the silicone covers' shock-absorption capabilities seemed inadequate.

I only wish they'd made covers for the GBA SP:

If I should acquire another gamepad, I'll probably get a Nerf cover for it as well...

...in pink.

You know, so ixtaileddemonfox feels at home when he pays me a visit.

I did that just to see if anyone was payin' attention, so congrats. Though I was kinda hopin' Duke.Togo would notice it first. He's been hintin' at wanting an Optimus helmet of his very own...

Hey, that reminds me: I have an Optimus-themed 3DS stylus that a friend of mine likes to call "Optimus' junk." Methinks I'll make it the default stylus for my pad.

If by "fleshy" you mean "pudgy," I'm tryin' to work on it. Really I am.

It's just that, with the closure of Hostess, I'm trying to down as many Twinkies as possible before they go bad.

I only have another two or three decades...
