As followers of the Playcast and loyal members of our site playthroughs know, December is a fun month on the site where we typically play a few titles and compete against each other for high scores or fastest times.  In the spirit of this competition, the Playcast has decided to host a video gaming golf tournament in December of 2018.  

But wait a minute Banana, December is still 6 months away!  Why the early notice? Well Timmy, this year is going to be a little different in terms of competing for high scores (well...low scores, this is golf after all).  December 2018's competition will be a team event!  Participants will be placed on a team with 3-4 other members where you and your teammates will vie for the overall lowest total score during the month. Teams will be randomly drawn in early November and play will of course begin on December 1st.  We will dedicate 10 days to each of the three games and determine the winner by the lowest overall team score.  There will be NO Battle Royale days this year. And yes, each member of the winning team will get a prize!

In an effort to let participants sign up and get in the most practice time possible, we are engaging with site members now.  We are also interested in putting together a list of three titles to play across retro and modern consoles, so put in your suggestions now! With your suggestions keep in mind that you should try to pick games for systems that the majority of our members would own and the games should be on the cheaper side. As usual, we would like to keep the total game cost under $30 if possible (maybe even lower).  Once we have a good list of games, we can put them to a vote.

RULES:
1. One starting course for each game will be selected prior to December 1st.
2. Each course will be played for 10 days.
3. The team with the lowest overall score WINS!
4. The use of any save states or devices that improve your game are prohibited. If you are unsure of what is prohibited, just ask.
5. Scores must be submitted to the thread via photograph.
6. Scores must only be submitted for the game being played during its 10 day run starting at midnight on the first day of the game and ending at midnight on the last day of the game. Late or early scores will not be accepted.
7. You can play a course as many times as you want during the allotted 10 day period and submit your lowest score.
8. Have fun, offer advice to and cheer on your teammates!
  
Prizes - Yep, I'm at it again and just picked up an item today in hopes of fabricating some prizes.  This year, each member of the winning team will get a prize to display in their game room/gaming area, and I will also give out a special prize to the participant with the overall lowest score for the month.

Team Selection - As a means of keeping it interesting (in terms of s#$t talking), Shawn and I have decided to captain opposing teams, and we have invited bickman2k to captain a third, since he was the Punch-out champion from last year.  This means that after the 23rd, I will draw names (videoed of course) and place each participant on a team.  So far we have 10 people signed up, so if these numbers hold, there will be two teams of 3 and one team of 4.  In this instance, what will happen is that the third place score from the team of four will be dropped at the end of the month. Here's an example:

Let's say that myself, Fokakis, FRO, and Crabby are on the 4 person team.  Crabby's overall score is a -14, Fokakis is -10, FRO is -9, and I (banana) am at -6.  FRO's score would be dropped for an overall team score of -30.  Don't worry, if you are on the four person team and your team wins, you will still receive the team prize. :)

If other people join before the 23rd, then we will adjust accordingly, but I would like for teams to be comprised of at least 3-4 members.

First off, I'm in.

I think Wii Sports with the motion controls would throw a nice wrench in to things and could really shake up some results. Or even Wii Sports Resort golf so you could use the Wii Motion Plus.

Toadstool Tour is my favorite Mario Golf game, so I'm all about playing that one. I think I still have my old save with everything unlocked.

I also had a ton of fun with CyberTiger on the N64, but I'm going to guess it's not one that a lot of people own. Probably pretty cheap, but I'd rather play Toadstool Tour than CyberTiger as well.

Surprisingly, Toadstool Tour is around $10-$12 and would be a cheaper Mario title if people were interested in going that route. CyberTiger goes from $8-$12 it seems for N64, but the game sellers for about half that price on the PS1.  I think any of these titles would work. I don't expect that people would own all of these titles, but keeping all three games under budget and with the competition beginning in December, I don't see much of an issue.

Neo turf masters is out on practically everything (switch is the newest at 9$).

The PGA golf games for Genesis were also pretty spectacular.

We could also try one of the myriad of mini golf games out there.

Love Turf Masters, but I will have to look more into the availability and cost. I know it's part of some collections, but looking into those I found that they were $20-$25 a pop....  However, I love this game, GrayGhost loves this game, and if there is enough interest from everyone, we can make it happen.

I'm so up for this. It sounds like a blast. If Kirby's Dream Course counts that would get my vote. One of my favorite golf type games.

Lots of great suggestions so far and the only one I havn't personally played so far is Cyber Tiger so where ever we end up I think I'll be happy. Should probably add just a good old Tiger Woods games to the list also. Very affordable, cross platform availability and pretty decent golf sims too.

As much positive stuff as I've heard about Neo Turf Masters, and given its appearance on a ton of compilations at this point, I'd say that almost seems like a no-brainer. I should probably check out Toadstool Tour, because I suspect it would be utterly charming.

I'll throw my clubs on the green, why not.  I live the idea of Kirbys dream course, but can I suggest a less than $5 game? Outlaw Golf.  Fun to play and ridiculous in its premise.

Are team scores averaged? We are allowed to replay the course over the whole 10 days or just once?

Great questions. Team scores will not be averaged. I will take the lowest course score from each participant and add them all together. For instance if a team of three has the following scores on a course: -3, -6, and + 7, their team course score would be -2. I will then take the scores from all three courses at the end of the month and do them the same way.

During the 10 days that you play each course, you can play that course as many times as you want and continue to submit your lowest score until the 10 days are up.

The good thing is, like most golf games, I believe all of these have the 3 input swing system.  If you've played golf games, everything should be pretty familiar.

I'm familiar with the 3-click system so I'm sure I'll get the hang of it fairly easily, but I've actually played very few golf games that use it. My video game golf experience amounts to a few versions of Golden Tee in various bars over the years, exactly one session of Golf on NES Remix for the Wii, and a couple hours of Aqua Teen Hunger Force Zombie Ninja Pro-Am lol. Oh, and some Golf Story on Switch.

On an unrelated note, do we know yet which game will be played in which order? Only reason I ask is because I'm going to be moving in the next week or so, so my console availability will be complicated the first week/week and a half of December while I get moved and settled in the new place. If I know which one we're starting with I can try and plan my playtime around the packing/unpacking. Starting with Neo Turf Masters would be ideal, since it's available digitally and on the Switch. I don't want to complicate things for everyone else just because of my situation though, so I can work with just an early heads-up with the plans.

Yes, just post your highest scores. Not every score. It's easier to keep up with that way. For example, if you post a score of 5 under and then score three under, don't post it. However if you score higher than 5 under, you can post that hire score. You can post scores up to December 10th for Neo Turf Masters

Don't worry dude, I can't get a grip on this game and have no interest wasting my life trying to get better at it. I am having a completely joyless time with this game so far. I too have an embarrassing score to post if necessary, and it will probably be necessary because I would rather play through Syberia again than all 18 holes of this shit.

Would rather be playing Siberia is a bit hyperbole...ha ha. I'm enjoying my time with this game. The nerdy calcutions like gauging club distances and meter percentages, positioning shots, finding the best place to land a ball for a flat put, along with wind and environment, really scratches an itch for me. I vividly remember my uncle getting a NES for Christmas in 1986. He got three games: SMB, Pro Wrestling, and Golf. Out of the three, we played Golf the most. Every golf game since then has seemingly been merely a slight evolution of that game. I hate that some people aren't having fun or scoring as low as they would like, but remember, it's a team event and other's scores can even things out. Just have fun with it. :)

I'm kinda with you singlebanana. I like the calculating that goes into the shot, but I also liked the more lighthearted ones like super monkey ball golf.  I had a great practice round the last day of Nov and havent been able to come close since.  Also this round stole 4 or 5 birdies from me and made them pars. But I did get my first Eagle on the final hole!

Well I did a whole lot better after playing it all night, tonight. This game got me pretty fired up while playing it. Haha! I restarted I don't know how many times. I kinda feel like I got lucky on a few holes. I pretty sure when I was practicing these past few months this is the one I had the most trouble with despite how simple it is. I will probably do better on Mario Golf and Hot Shots. Although Hot Shots voice overs drive me bonkers lol. But having fun so far with the challenge of things. I gave the game another go and lowered my score from +33 to +11.

The game is giving me a real anxiety problem. In my last round I was hovering around par and would have been thrilled to finish as such. Sadly, I lost it on holes 16 and 18 with forced give-ups. The fact that you can't practice particular holes creates a situation where the more time you invest, the higher the pressure and stakes are the further you get.

I realize my last post was pretty toxic and I shouldn't have posted right after rage quitting. Ironically, I was the one who insisted this game be in the running when we came up with the original list of nominees. Mind you, I'm not stressing myself out to compete with the likes of you guys, I just want to not suck for one whole round and get near par. The past two years we've done single player (individual) competitions, and going forward I'll definitely not participate if we do team sports again.

Also, what the hell is the commentator saying when it shows the leaderboard and it sounds like she says "This is Nelson support"?

I understand and feel bad knowing that you and possibly others are having any sort of anxiety over this community competition. Obviously, that's not what I intended, as my goal was to have some fun and have us communicate with other site members more in the process.  I have heard from a few of you concerning some of your scores and all I can say is that if you are scoring high, you are not alone in this. For any of you out there experiencing anxiety with this format, shoot me a PM and we can discuss it.  If it's bothering some people, I'm happy to switch it over to a more casual format, an individual competition, or remove you from the competition portion of the event and rearrange teams accordingly.  I want this to be a fun month like we have had in years past, since that is the ultimate goal. Took me several days, but I finally reached a point where I'm -2 on the course. Feels good.

@GrayGhost81 - don't lose heart. I got REALLY frustrated with the game the first couple times through the course. Once I started to get a better feel for the quirks of the courses, clubs, etc. it has begun to come together. I suspect the other games will be a bit more forgiving, because they're not designed to munch quarters like Neo Turf Masters was, and will probably have some quality of life improvements that will make them easier. At least I hope so, LOL!

I'm getting more used to the game, but I can't get through a round without everything falling apart on the back nine. My wife has politely asked me to give the game a break, and I couldn't agree more. I improved my +11 by one stroke. +10 may end up being the best I can do so I'm posting a pic just in case I don't have the nerve to fire the game up again. My apologies to Doug and Fokakis.

Dropping 22 off of you score is a massive improvement and that front 9 on your scorecard looks like a solid run. You're definitely correct that the further you get the more stressful the run because it's so easy to blow a great 9+ holes with one little mistake.

Feeling a lot better about my ability to play this game. Still managing to bogey or double bogey a hole here and there, but at least I can consistently birdie a decent percentage of them.

When do the rules for Mario Golf drop? We can start submitting scores on the 10th, correct?

What are you playing it on? Avoid the ps2 collection the lag is so bad, it's almost impossible to get a good score.

Apparently you're onto something, coach Doug. I was playing the PS2 version, but switched to the PSP version yesterday, partly to get a different perspective and partly so my wife wouldn't know I was still playing.

It took me a long time to get to this. I made myself quit and put the game down every time I screwed up so I wouldn't rage too hard, and there are so many ways to screw up, as previously noted. The best I could do as of yesterday was +4, which I thought was great because it was the first time I didn't force quit any holes.

Anyway, I finally had all the stars line up for a round just now, and I am done with this game because I feel like I could play fifty more rounds and not get a decent score like this again. The key was getting lucky breaks on all the holes that were giving me trouble, then getting past 16 without over-shooting it. Anyway here's a -5 for me. I'm looking forward to starting the next game.

No, Mario Golf starts on the 11th. That gives us 10 full days to play each course.

Also, I'm playing on the PS2 collection and that's where my score came from. I'm not experiencing any lag at all. Each golfers swing meter goes at a different speed depending on their accuracy, so perhaps that is what you are experiencing Doug.

I'm sorry if any of my options for Mario Golf seem confusing. If you just play on the settings that the game begins on, you are good. I just didn't want anyone adding Mulligan's or moving the Tee Box up and saying I didn't have a rule about it.

Hey guys, I am working on sorting out the overall leaderboard after the first leg of this competition. If you will, please look at the score I have posted for you in the initial post and verify that it is in fact your lowest score. I have been trying to stay on top of it, but even "perfect" people like myself make errors. :P

Overall Standing are up in the initial post. Again, let me know if any corrections need to be made. As per the rules, the third highest score for "9 Ironsword" has been dropped, since they are a 4 player team.

Also, I want to be transparent about an issue that came up this round. My team, "The Fore Coursemen of the Agolfolypse" was also supposed to drop our third highest score, since we are also a four person team. However, one of our members did not post a score this week. As a result, I contacted the other team captains to let them know and asked them to decide on what should be done in this situation. They decided that going with the three scores my team posted would be the best solution.  I sincerely hope that this solution is okay with everyone and if you have any concerns, please express them to me in a PM and not here on the forums. I know that this is a competition, but the main purpose of this competition is for us to have fun together and enjoy some camaraderie during the holiday season.

Ouch. I can safely say, I'm not a fan of the putting in this game. Also, why did Camelot make it so you have one chance to choose your swing, and if you don't press a button, rather than the meter going up and down until you do something, it just automatically shoots for you? For a game like golf, which is supposed to be slow, methodical, and measured, it seems counter-intuitive. In any event, at least my 2nd try was better:

It's so quiet in here. Wheres all the Mario chatter? How do you guys feel about it compares to Neo Turf Masters? Very different takes on the same mechanics so I'm pretty curious.

I'm enjoying Mario golf more than neo turf masters.  I'm still struggling to be more consistent with my putting though.  I've sunk 60 foot putts and missed 6 foot putts.

After what a hard time I had with NTM I was thrilled with my -2 on Mario Golf on only the third try, so I stopped playing almost completely. I think I've turned the game on one other time and quit right away. Not gonna let it get to me. However, once the competition is over I will remember this game in particular if I'm in the mood for something pleasant and relaxing.

I tried Hot Shots Fore today thinking I could get ahead of the game with some practice, and oh boy, it wasn't pretty. The third press is so hard for me to time right. My goal, and I'm totally serious about this, is +10 or better.

Well my disc finally came in last night and after dragging in after a long day of work and coaching both of my older kids basketball games, I final got to sit down and play.  This is my first time playing the game, so my first outing was a little rough and it took me a round to learn the mechanics and course layout. I used Yoshi and shot a +7.  My second playthrough was much better, since I figured out how to zoom in and look at the landing area of my shots. This allowed me to move my stance to a better location so that I could more easily avoid hazards and stay in the fairways.  My second attempt is the score you see above. Got in a third round and shot a -3.

First impressions of this game. I really love the cartoony golf games so much more than the more realistic games like the Tiger Woods series. I love the graphics of MG and all of the loveable characters that we have become accustomed to all these years. The gameplay for me is just okay. While I appreciate that the greens are more challenging, I find that reading them can be extremely difficult sometimes. I figured out that by using the yellow thumb stick, that you can travel down the line, but even so, when greens go from uphill to downhill in your putt, it can be hard to judge speed. I often jump the cup, or come up short out of fear of overrunning the hole and three putting. A big part of this game is being able to get right up on the hole on your approach for an easier putt, which I am trying to work out. I don't always feel that I'm getting the correct length out of all of these clubs and that is frustrating; NTM had a great deal more precision and I really appreciated that more. As someone mentioned before, I don't really see the need for the third button press since it hits the ball anyway, but I think that might trigger the Super Shot if you hit both perfectly??  I am more of a fan of the three button press, which we will see in HSF. HSF also has similar putting mechanics and green reads, but I just feel that it is done much better. Perhaps it's just my bias for the HS series, since I have spent a great deal of time with it.

QUESTION OF THE MONTH! The golf tournament has a few of us breaking our clubs. So tell us, what was your worst rage quit moment? DM it to me if you'd like to share anonymously.

To clarify, not rage quit moment of this particular event, but of all time.

2 nights ago, while playing Mario Golf, I made the foolish choice to try and achieve par or under on the 1st 6 holes, and I wasn't going to be satisfied with my performance until then. I ended up restarting my Game Cube after the 4th or 5th hole 10-12 times while practicing, each time getting up from the couch and loudly exclaiming, "NOPE!" each time I got up. After the final try, I gave up and stomped off, feeling as though the game had got the better of me.

This game is killing me. LOL! The margin for error is so small. The game is slightly humorous wirh the voice acting. However, my score is definitely going to hurt my team. Unfortunately, I am out of time to play before family stuff and what not. I apologize to my teammates for this abysmal acore. I don't believe we saved the best game for last.  Got stuck behind a water trap on the 15th hole and it was all down hill from there....

Yeah, if I miss the sweet spot at the end of a swing, I almost always end up in a sand trap, hitting a tree, or in the water because I slice really bad. It definitely takes the wind out of my sails.

Finally got a score I am happy with on Hot Shots. I have to be hyper focuses and mindful while playing this game compared to the other two. Every shot needs my full attention or it's just constantly a mess. I could find a groove on the other two games and play them in the background while watching a show or having a conversation. With Hot Shots I need to shut everything else off and only pay attention to the game. This was my best score by a lot so I played the last 4 holes extremely safe and didn't try to push for another stroke or two that I may have been able to knock off. Was too nervous I was going to kill yet another run because of holes 16-18.

Uh oh. I better just paste my score now.  My fat PS2 seemed like it wasnt outputting one of the colors so the picture was all messed up.  So I played on my PS2 slim just fine until tonight.  Now the disc cannot be read.  Idk if its gonna get fixed before the deadline so here's my best score so far.

My best score so far. I'm apparently terrible at this game. I was at -2 going into hole 14, then it all went down the toilet. Curse you, water hazards! Best I could manage is a +2 overall.

Yes, it appears that you guys are the winners.  I will update the final standings when I have some time. Life and work have a little overbearing as of late.  I actually worked on the low score trophy some this past weekend.  Still have a little work to do on that end and will post some photos of the prizes when it is done.
