Title: image size Post by: Alabama-Shrimp on November 14, 2012, 03:56:57 PM Has anyone thought about removing the size restriction on the size of images posted both I the forum and in listings?
I'm asking as I have loads on my phone to post that are oversized and nothing or the time to resize them all. Title: Re: image size Post by: NES_Rules on November 14, 2012, 05:11:02 PM AFAIK, there is no size restriction on images posted in the forum, just for attachments. And I think that's just to keep the sizes down so we don't end up with a server filled with giant images that we need to store.
As for game pages, we have them at 550 pixels for two main reasons. First, for the sake of consistency, if everything was scanned at its native size, nothing would match and would make the DB look even messier. And secondly, the size is large enough so that most words on a box are readable, but small enough that we can claim fair use of the images from copyright laws. If we used the full size scans, it would be much more likely for some publisher to sue us when some idiot starts printing out the scans and making bootleg boxes or something. There are a number of image resizing tools out there, including this one (http://www.rfgeneration.com/images/staff/EzThmb_Setup.exe). Which should make it easier to resize all the images you have at once. Title: Re: image size Post by: blcklblskt on November 14, 2012, 05:57:03 PM I use FastStone Photo Resizer. It quickly resizes images to any size you want, and doesn't degrade the quality.

Title: Re: image size Post by: Izret101 on November 16, 2012, 11:12:18 AM Send them to photobucket or some other free image hosting site and link through to them?
Dump them to your PC and do the same/resize them there? Dump them to your PC and do the same/resize them there? if thats the only option then thats whats i will have to do. the main point of all of this though was that nearly everything i use now is android. although they do things well its not the same as windows Title: Re: image size Post by: techwizard on November 17, 2012, 01:54:24 PM for the database at least the best would be if you picked up a scanner, it makes everything look so much neater when scanned and cropped/rotated properly. you can get some pretty cheap ones that work well, i think mine was about $50 for a 3-in-1 printer/copier/scanner.
Title: Re: image size Post by: Sirgin on November 17, 2012, 04:08:05 PM 1. Connect your phone to a computer via a USB cable.
2. Transfer the images to your computer. 3. Use a batch converter to convert the images to the size of your choice. 4. PROFIT the main point of all of this though was that nearly everything i use now is android. although they do things well its not the same as windows Did you lose your ability to spell when you stopped using Windows, too? If you cannot be bothered to write your native language properly, I can imagine resizing images must seem like an impossible task. PS: If there were no size limits to uploading images then people would start to upload their straight-from-camera 5MB images. Also if you are taking pics with your phone I can't assume they would be DB quality. Maybe I am selling phone cams short? Also if you are taking pics with your phone I can't assume they would be DB quality. Maybe I am selling phone cams short? My phone camera takes excellent shots outdoors, but the quality for indoor shots leaves something to be desired. I'm going to say that the newer smartphones have cameras that are good enough for DB quality. They're probably better than the camera I used to use about 4 years ago, anyway. Title: Re: image size Post by: Alabama-Shrimp on November 19, 2012, 07:27:22 PM Tbh a lot of the pictures are either crappy silly ones for the random picture thread that aren't worth the effort to resize. Or very carefully taken ones for the database. I don't have time to mess with scanners and stuff, in fact i don't seem to have much time for playing game now either.
As for the spelling is anything's wrong blame Samsung it's their auto spellcheck I'm using. But as far as I could see all looked ok. Title: Re: image size Post by: techwizard on November 20, 2012, 03:10:03 AM the problem (in my opinion) with camera photos in the database vs scanned images is that the perspective is hard to get right, which makes cropping likely to leave more of a background making it look messier. with a scan all you normally need to do is rotate it, which you can do very easily in gimp, and then you can crop right to the edges. i know you can adjust the perspective in gimp too, but it's hard to get right, and also lighting from a scanned image is usually better too.
