Title: Amiibo - prints, reprints and rereleases
Post by: Raidou on September 09, 2015, 07:51:41 AM
I have been recently adding EUR/ANZ amiibo variants to the database whenever my curiosity overwhelms my budgeting skills, which includes variations of Rosalina and Shulk with -C1 part numbers on the rear card.  I labeled these variations as "First Revision" because I couldn't think of anything better (and I really did try).  This has since been changed "First Revision" to "Reprint", which, unfortunately actually makes thing more confusing - at least for the European releases.  Rather than constantly edit DB entries or PM staff members, it seems best to present what I know so far for public consumption.

For amiibo from the first 4 waves, there can be up to three different releases (not two):
  • C0 Original: This is the original release of the figurine. The -C0 refers to the last part backing card's part number (eg. Shulk:PUA-NVL-C-AABV-EUR-C0).  European amiibo have a manual (part no: MAA-NVL-C-EUR-C0).  Japanese amiibo also have manuals but I do not know enough about them to comment.  US amiibo do not have manuals.
  • C0 Reprint: Certain amiibo (often the rarer amiibo) received reprints around June/July 2015 which included identical figurines and packaging.  The only difference between original and reprints in Europe are that reprints have a different manual (now MAA-NVL-C-EUR-C1).  Presumably US C0 reprints are indistinguishable from C0 originals.  Again, I do not have enough information regarding Japanese reprints.
*NB. amiibo discussions on RFGen have been using "reprint" to refer to the unchanged restocks so I will continue to do so here.
  • C1: These releases now have new packaging  ending in C1 (eg. Shulk:PUA-NVL-C-AABV-EUR-C1), which show the New Nintendo 3DS as well as the Wii U gamepad, and elements have been resized slightly to accommodate.  The underside is slightly different.  C1 releases also include minor changes to the figurine itself (more on that later). Do not know enough about C1 releases in US or Japan. Sorry.
*NB. As we have been using "reprint" to refer to the 'unchanged' restocks, we can't really call these reprints seeing as they are different models in different packaging

The annoying part: some amiibo have both C0 Reprints AND C1 versions (eg. Shulk, Rosalina), some went straight to C1 (eg. Villager, as seen in Dennis Fleaman's video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=jUwKO9QFQeE#t=368)), and many have reprints but no C1 version (eg. Samus).

So far I have identified the following amiibo with C1 versions (and known differences):
  • Rosalina: The stars on her dress are spaced further apart
  • Shulk: Eyes are darker.  I believe that the eyes are now paint-on-transfer instead of just a straight transfer
  • Villager: Different transfers for eyes and mouth
  • Lucario: ? Don't know
  • Pac Man: ? Don't know

That's all I know so far.  Feel free to chime in about different regions/amiibo.  Fre-flowing discussion makes Alfador happy!  alfador

Not gonna say much, just that we should keep it simple. With figurines like these, keeping track of every package change is unnecessary and we should just track changes to the figure itself.

Update:

The 8-bit Mario amibo uses a -C2 card.  Whereas the -C0 showed the Wii U Game Pad, the -C1showed the GamePad and the New Nintendo 3DS, the -C2 now has the 3ds NFC reader. So we have a 4th release type:

  • -C2 Original:  Original releases from approx. September 2015 onward.
