Title: PS3 rumored to cost $399.
Post by: phoenix1967 on June 28, 2005, 03:19:03 PM

I don't know about anyone else on this board, but there's no way I'd be paying $399 for any system. That's way too much. Sony seems to be walking on thin ice if they expect people to "just buy it" at that price like the article implies.

$299 for an XBox 360 would look like a bargain at that point. And Nintendo Revolution may be even less.

Not to sound evil, but that's awesome. Kutaragi is an arrogant ass. Let the mighty fall.

I think i am going to get a kick out of this system release.
I hope that Halo 3 and the PS3 get released on the same day like M$ said they were doing.

Sales figures will be interesting i think.

The Xbox was 479 euros when it was released here, and I believe the ps2 was even more. And both of them are still around and sold quite a bit.

We might not buy it for that price, but there are plenty of people that will. And by the time those people all have one, they can lower the price. It's what they always do.

And what makes Kutaragi so arrogant? He basically says that he knows it's a lot of money, but it's a great product, so people will buy it. Sounds like a combination of common sense and sales talk to me.

Excerpts from www.hardwarezone.com (http://www.hardwarezone.com/news/view.%70hp?id=1697&cid=5)

"Kutaragi is miffed that the likes of Nintendo and Microsoft won't call their consoles computers. Nintendo, he complains to Japanese site Impress PC Watch, "keeps telling the world their consoles are 'toys'," while Microsoft keeps calling the Xbox a "game machine".

'We're positioning the PS3 as a supercomputer', he says, 'But people won't recognize it as a computer unless we call it a computer, so we're going to run an OS on it. In fact, the Cell can run multiple OSes. In order to run the OSes, we need a hard disk. So in order to declare that the PS3 is a computer, I think we'll have [the hard disk] preinstalled with Linux as a bonus."

Hey! I remember something called the PSX! It failed miserably. Why try again? If I wanted to run an OS I run it on my pc and save 200 dollars. Additionally, Mr. and Mrs. Smith who work their blue collar jobs will be strapped for cash as I can almost guarantee that around the PS3 launch next year gas will be approaching the three dollar mark nationwide. Can't buy that PS3 if you have to buy gas to drive to work while paying bills while buying food.

I heard that the PS3 was supposed to retail at $465, so $399 doesn't sound to bad.

Of course I'm going to wait for a price drop because none of the first generation games intrest me.

Oh that would make sense then.

Think of the expensive consoles in  video game history and how well they did.

CDTV - Failed
CD32 - Failed
CD-i - Failed
3DO - Failed
Halcyon - Failed
And I am sure I am missing some.

I think we are talking about two different things. The PSX is the Media Center Version of a PS2 that was only relased in Japan. It is not the PS1 or PSone. I'm fairly certain the PSX flopped. Attached is a picture.

The PSX did indeed flop.  As Sony always does, they hyped up the specs a LOT, and when the thing finally came out (late), it wasn't half the machine Sony had promised.  I may be wrong on this, but I believe Sony failed to mention some of the features were taken out until the very last moment.  People who shelled out their entire savings were pissed, but Sony laughed their evil laugh and went back to Hell where they plot with Satan about how they can destroy video games as we know them....

Okay, so I went a little overboard there (hint: That wasn't all serious.), but the point still remains.  Sony always hypes up their hardware far beyond what it can actually do, and they charge exhorbitant prices for it.  Oh well.  As much as I would love to see Sony fall, I dunno if it will happen just yet.  The differences between PS3 and the 3DO, Halcyon, etc. are huge.  First, both of these systems cost much more than PS3's projected price.  Let's review.

RDI Halcyon: $2,500 in 1985 (in 2005 dollars, this is: $4436.65)
Panasonic 3DO: $700 in 1993 (in 2005 dollars, this is: $920.37)
Philips CD-i: $400 in 1991 (in 2005 dollars, this is: $564.45)
Amiga CD32: $400 in 1994 (in 2005 dollars, this is: $510.61)

Go here: http://www.westegg.com/inflation/

Not ONE of the above systems had major first or third party support.  The Halcyon had a whopping TWO titles, which also retailed for something like $150 or $200 (1985 money, remember) - I can't remember the exact price offhand.  The 3DO wasn't even a first-party system.  Trip Hawkins just sold the technology and made millions for a system with few games and fewer sales.  CD-i?  Pffff.  That thing was a "mutimedia machine."  Few games came out for it at all, aand fewer in the first few years after its release.  While Sony calls the PS3 something similar to a CD-i, nobody actually thinks of it that way.  It is a gaming machine, no matter what kind of "supercomputer" Sony likes to call it.  CD32?  Half of the people at this site don't even know what one of those is without looking it up, and we're all video game geeks.  I skipped the CDTV completely because it was hardly even released in the U.S.

Sony may be putting a stupidly high price on this thing, especially considering the loss they are also taking on the hardware.  But they have third party support out the ass.  If people will buy iPods for ridiculously high prices, which break often and have shitty non-replaceable batteries, people will buy PS3's.

I still hope it fails though.  It sounds like a piece of garbage to me, and every time Ken Kutaragi opens his mouth, I hate him more and more.  My favorite part of the article was when Kutaragi went into used car salesman mode and verbally made gamers everywhere know that they are his bitch:

Quote
Ken Kutaragi, who avoided revealing the PS3's price but hinted that it would not be marked down excessively. "Whether consumers think a product is expensive or cheap all depends on the balance between its appeal and price," he said. "Our ideal [for the PS3] is for consumers to think to themselves, 'OK, I'll work more hours and buy it.' We want people to feel that they want it, no matter what."

Hey asshole, I'm not going to work extra hours for your overpriced "supercomputer."  I think instead I'll take my earnings and buy a Gakken TV Boy.  You make me sick.

I was more wishing it would fail like those system I listed did. I realize Sony has a lot of backing unlike those systems did.

But I can dream can't I?

well i didn't read anything but the first post and I dont know why little nemo is there but i'm still gonna get a ps3 instead of a 360 or nintendo whatever because I love sony. And the ps3 is gonna be ten times faster, better and more able to beat up your guy's dads than the 360 or the nintendo thing.

I repair PS2's, Xboxes and other systems.  This has taught me not to ever buy a first run of any new system.  Unless its nintendo, I have had about 15 Gamecubes broken , about 1000 PS2 systems , and 600 Xboxes.  I my buy a revolution, but for the other two I will wait for the price to drop, by that time they should have fixed most of the bugs
