Title: How to tell if a PS was modded Post by: Izret101 on July 01, 2005, 07:48:37 AM I got a Playstation at a tagsale a few days ago and was going to play Crash Bash on it when i got a message saying the system may be modded.
Anyone know how to tell if it was? I haven't opened it up yet and i haven't burned a game to try it. It may have been a fluke though. Because i have gotten a message about a modded system (or burned cart i don't remember now) on my SNES before. EDIT I tried a few other games and the only one it has happened to so far was Crash Bash. Mortal Kombat Mythos, Battle Hunter, Speedball 2100, and Spyro 2 all worked but Crash Bash i tried 4 times and kept getting the warning. I don't know what i am supposed to be seeing because i don't know what the inside of a PS looks like when its not modded. Title: Re: How to tell if a PS was modded Post by: Arrrhalomynn on July 01, 2005, 12:14:02 PM You'll see some loose wiring and shoddy soldering if it's modded.
Title: Re: How to tell if a PS was modded Post by: Izret101 on July 01, 2005, 07:57:13 PM Well i brought my PS to my dads with me and Crash Bash.
Crash Bash works fine on his and gives me the mod error on mine. I opened it and saw no loose wires or shoddy soldering but there is always the chance it was done under the RF shield (which i did not remove) I am going to open up my dads PS and compare it to mine to note and changes to wiring or blah blah. The only thing that struck me as odd so far was inside the PS there is a set of wires that has 2 rounded pieces of what seems like a dead magnet on them. Title: Re: How to tell if a PS was modded Post by: Izret101 on July 01, 2005, 08:23:15 PM Opened up my Dads PS to check for differences but forgot to check if they were the same model. d'oh
So everything was different there. But i never did take off the RF shield on my PS so i did and once i starts unscrewing another shield underneath started to push it up :) What a assume to be the second RF shield was lifted in the lower right hand corner and there it was a little chip wrapped in electrical tape sitting on the processor with wires running everywhere. The soldering wass pretty good though. Not shoddy. As for those strange dead magnets on the wires, both models have it... Wish i knew what they were for. Those are called Ferrite Rings and the help prevent the PlayStation from generating RF Interference. Lots of electronic equipment generate what amounts to be low power TV Signals as a byproduct of their circuitry and wiring. The Ferrite Ring acts as a choke and prevents the signals from interfering with nearby TV sets.Wish i knew what they were for. You are a quite knowledgable person. Now i just need to find out what games my PS can play and which will give me the mod chip warning. Since Crash Bash came out in 2000 i assume all games pre2000 will not give me that warning while any games after that will.
