Hold 1,2, and Up on the D-Pad when you see the Sega Master System Logo after you turn the system on.  Mine has Snail Maze built in!

Or just start your master system without a game in it.

That didn't work for me for some reason.

The very early SMS had a "hidden" game in it. The manual hints at the hidden game, turning the machine on without a cart in, did not start it. One had to fiddle with the control pad, like Catch Five Bats said.

I remember in around 87/88 we went to the shop in Brighton, and my friend who had figured the code out amazed the staff in the shop as he got a game up without a cart or card in the slot.

It was Snail Maze too.

Hang-on
Safari Hunt (light phaser)

i have another sms that i can try out sometime, i hope its a different game. is snail maze any good?

I thought Snail Maze was only hidden in the SMS that didn't have a built in game.

I have a few variants. One with no built in game, one with Hang On and either Safari Hunt or Astro Warrior and one with Missile Defense 3D

Interesting...
I wasn't aware of there being that many variations.

I think the older model Master Systems required you to press 1,2, and Up on the Sega logo, but the newer ones didn't.

Then surely it DID have a built in game.  ;)

Over here, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, and Sonic seem to be the fave built ins. Come across Missile Defence 3D too.

But sonic and Alex Kidd are in the SMS 2. Was that one even released in the US?

I think SMS 2 was released in very limited quantities in the US, but I could be completely wrong.
