Title: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Arrrhalomynn on August 09, 2005, 07:17:52 AM Well, maybe not that breaking.
Quote Highly placed sources in the UK industry have told GamesIndustry.biz that the Xbox 360 is set to launch in Europe on November 25th, with the US launch preceding a few days earlier - and the price tag may be as high as UKP 299. According to our sources, speaking under conditions of strict anonymity, the official announcement of the European date will be made by Microsoft to its trade partners on the 15th of this month, two days before a public announcement at Game Convention in Leipzig. While they were confident of the dates being mooted, the price of the system remains less certain - with our sources indicating that Microsoft itself may not have made up its mind on the matter as yet. "The original plan was UKP 249, but now that Sony is talking about the PS3 being expensive, UKP 299 is looking more likely," according to one source - although it was admitted that this pricing is a "best guess" based on information from Microsoft, not an official figure by any means. Even allowing for the higher tax rates here in Europe, a UKP 299 price point would translate as around $500 in the US, which is significantly higher than is currently anticipated by most market watchers - among whom the general consensus is that the system will launch at $300, suggesting a UK price point of under UKP 200. One area of pricing which our independent sources were more certain of was the pricing of software, with Xbox 360 titles likely to hit shelves at around UKP 44.99 - a price premium over current generation software which Microsoft is said to be unhappy with, but which has been driven by demands from third party publishers. Microsoft this afternoon declined to comment on the reports, saying simply that "we have nothing to announce at this time." Now this is all just gossiping by people 'on the inside', but if it's true, it doesn't sound too good. At least not for us. I don't think the introduction price for the XBOX was much lower here, so I can't blame them for trying it again. Especially if there's no competition yet. Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Izret101 on August 09, 2005, 07:38:06 AM Well if thats the truth i am definately NOT going to be getting a 360 for quite some time.
And i won't be buying very many games new either. 360 is way to rich for my blood. . But arn't the PAL prices generally higher anyways? Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: phoenix1967 on August 09, 2005, 07:39:04 AM If any new system is released for more than $299, I have a hard time believing that it would sell. Especially since you'll have to purchase software (at least $49.99 each new game), probably a memory card($19.99?), and likely a 2nd controller (which will likely be around $39.99 since they're wireless now).
I bought my xbox when it dropped to $179.99, and only because I had a $50 gift certificate to help offset the cost. The one thing that MS has going for it is the backward compatibility. Even though it sounds like it's only for "top selling" games, it's still a solid selling point. Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Also didn't they decide not to ship this with the harddrive? There goes another 100 bucks. I am sure not going to be paying 500+ bucks because i can play Halo2 on my new 360. Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Arrrhalomynn on August 09, 2005, 07:44:03 AM Quote But aren't the PAL prices generally higher anyways? Yeah, they are. The XBOX and Playstation 2 both launched at higher prices than 300 pounds (if I remember correctly). On the other hand, so did the Sega Saturn, and we all remember how that ended.... Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: phoenix1967 on August 09, 2005, 07:54:56 AM Forgive my cluelessness, but I've seen the term "PAL" a lot and have no idea what it refers to. What does it stand for?
Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Izret101 on August 09, 2005, 08:09:07 AM PAL is the games released in Europe.
And don't worry about your cluelessness. It happens :) Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: den68 on August 09, 2005, 08:11:00 AM PAL stands for the Phase Alternating Line. This is a video standard used by the color television industry and is the common standard used in Europe. This video signal format sets the video to playback at 25 frames per second which contain 625 lines of pixels in each frame.
There are various divisions within the PAL standard which determine what pixel and frame aspect ratios are used. These formats are as follows: · PAL (resolution 720 x 486) · D-1 PAL (resolution 720 x 576) · D-1 PAL Square Pix (resolution 768 x 576) US TV's are NTSC NTSC stands for the National Television Standards Committee. It is a video signal standard used by the color television industry in the United States and Japan. The NTSC is a common format used by many video compression boards. NTSC video contains frames and fields. Most NTSC video frames consist of two interlaced fields. Each field is displayed as alternating horizontal lines across the screen. Most computer video formats are non-interlaced. The frame aspect ratio used by the NTSC standard format is 4:3. This format uses a 640 by 480 resolution. I got this info off a FAQ btw. I knew the gist but not the specifics. Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: CatchFiveBats on August 09, 2005, 08:44:04 AM I'm really not surprised, and I'm also not that aggravated, since I won't be buying a PS3 or 360 on launch...or, perhaps, ever. Revolution all the way!
Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Vladimir on August 09, 2005, 09:00:02 AM That's to be expected with all the useless shit they're cramming in that damn box. I don't much care.
I'll be getting the Revolution, maybe the PS3 if it doesn't cost a million bucks, and gives me a reason to want it. I wish Sega would make a comeback T-T Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: CatchFiveBats on August 09, 2005, 09:12:20 AM Quote I wish Sega would make a comeback T-T You keep on saying that, but it's never going to happen. They don't have the kind of funding to release another console, and with the decisions they've made with previous consoles, they probably wouldn't last long even if they did make a comeback. At least, that's what I think. Quote I'll be getting the Revolution, maybe the PS3 if it doesn't cost a million bucks, and gives me a reason to want it. The PS3 is going to cost a lot. If you read the quote in the first post, it says that Sony is talking about the PS3 being more expensive, so you're probably out of luck there too. Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: atari_wizard on August 09, 2005, 09:14:26 AM Quote Revolution all the way! for sure! i am looking forward to getting a revolution too! my wife just pcs'd from germany to new york and when her house hold goods came, we noticed that our xbox was stolen! along with a wireless controller and a few other misc. things. with the price being that high, i think we can live with picking up another xbox. i'd say 6 months to a year later, i'll be able to pick a 360 up. Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: PDorr3 on August 09, 2005, 09:15:40 AM If this is true, than xbox 360 and elder scrolls 4 :-[ I was hoping for a price like 300 or less

You're right...I guess I'll just have to get a better PC. Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Tynstar on August 09, 2005, 09:47:42 AM I will be getting the XBox 360 if it is $299.99 or lower. I will also get Elder Scroll for $49.99 I already have $50 down for the preorder on the 360. I will but some more money down each month until it comes out to spread out the cost.

Yeah, I've been saving my pennies...and nickels, dimes and quarters to see how much I can come up with to put towards a 360. So far, I'm up to about $140 in just the spare change I've accumulated over the years. Whatever it all ends up totalling, I'm considering it "free money" since I wasn't spending it anyway [I just kept filling an empty milk jug. It reminds me of that Seinfeld AMEX commercial]. Do banks still accept rolled coin? Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Izret101 on August 09, 2005, 11:08:15 AM Yes they do but you have to have an account number on them.
When i was younger they never made a big deal about it but i guess once you get older they think your going to screw the bank by shortchanging them a penny. Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: TraderJake on August 09, 2005, 01:04:07 PM I know I am getting a revolution on launch, and this news that the 360 is expensive is not that surprising -- hence Arr's amazing thread title. I can't wait though for the price of the PS3 and Revolution to be released, I'm sure the PS3 will be God awfully expensive, and the Revolution will probably be more expensive than everyone expects. Still though, the prospects of a virtual console are amazing, and the thought of playing Super Metroid or other Nintendo classics on my TV is awesome.
Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Tynstar on August 09, 2005, 01:27:57 PM I was looking foward to teh Revolution but no HD support is bad.
Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: The Metamorphosing Leon on August 09, 2005, 02:04:31 PM For five hundred bucks you could just mod out your computer pretty nicely. I might just work on upgrading my PC and wait until the console prices drop.
Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: CatchFiveBats on August 09, 2005, 02:22:49 PM Quote I was looking foward to teh Revolution but no HD support is bad. I could care less about HD. Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Izret101 on August 09, 2005, 02:37:55 PM Quote Still though, the prospects of a virtual console are amazing, and the thought of playing Super Metroid or other Nintendo classics on my TV is awesome. Hopefully they don't charge to much for the classic games. It would suck if they were charging 5-10 bucks or more a piece for them. At that much chances are i could buy them CIB for less or a few bucks more. Quote I was looking foward to teh Revolution but no HD support is bad. Isn't it going to run on Sandiscs or someother already existant media card? If that is the case it might be something that you are already using for another piece of technology. Quote For five hundred bucks you could just mod out your computer pretty nicely. I might just work on upgrading my PC and wait until the console prices drop. Thats what i am going to start doing. I spend as much time (if not more) on my PC as i do gaming. Hell i even game on my PC. So i am going to start putting money aside 50-50 for PC parts and games. Quote I could care less about HD. Having a built in HD is just one less thing you have to pay for. I don't know of anyone who filled up thier XBox HD with game saves(music doesn't count IMO and game ISO's definately don't) On the other hand i have burned thru the space on GCN/PS2/PS/DC/N64 memorycards/VMUs/controller paks. HD is MUCH better to have to save you just that much more money. But if it is added into the cost later(PS2 HDD and possibly 360HD) it then is something you shouldn't care about. Nintendo's excuse for not putting in a HD is that they expect children as your as 5 to be using the system. Pretty weak reasoning IMO. Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: TraderJake on August 09, 2005, 02:46:42 PM Well, HD in this context is High Definition, so I shall comment on that.
High Def sure looks nice, but I am beginning to see how I am buying games because they are fun to play and not because teh graphicz r0x0rz!!!! And while yes, if Nintendo forced high def development, all games could theoretically have amazing graphics. But, the trade off is that there would be higher development costs, which will be a major sticking point in the next generation. I think that Nintendo is doing its best to keep costs down, and as such, good for them. I also think 480p is going to be supported by Nintendo, so while not 1080i or 1080p, it's something. As for no hard drive, I am not aware if we know that, but if it is true, eh. I imagine their memory cards will be rather large in this era of technological advances. Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Izret101 on August 09, 2005, 03:15:04 PM Heh oops.
I use HD interchangably for Hard Drive and High Def. REALLY old habits die hard. But now that you mention it it would make sense Tyn is whining about it :P Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Tynstar on August 09, 2005, 03:22:00 PM Quote I could care less about HD. My HDTV says differently If the Revolution supports 480p then I will be OK with it becaus ethat is what the GameCube does. Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Izret101 on August 09, 2005, 03:24:07 PM So are you bribing him with your TV?
:P Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Tynstar on August 09, 2005, 03:25:02 PM Quote So are you bribing him with your TV? :P ??? Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Sauza12 on August 10, 2005, 07:59:55 AM God damn it. I was going to pick one up if it stayed around $300, but $500 is just ridiculous. I'm going to put down some money to reserve one, but I'm waiting to see what the price will be. I am going to be one of those anoying guys that throws down 25-50 bucks on the reservation everytime I get paid just so I don't have to plunk down all that money at once.
Ironically enough, I have a paycheck on the 18th of November that I don't have to use to pay any bills so it can all go to a new system. Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: phoenix1967 on August 10, 2005, 10:32:18 AM Even if you put the deposit down, it should be refundable if you feel the console comes in at too high of a price.
Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Vladimir on August 12, 2005, 01:32:46 PM Quote I was looking foward to teh Revolution but no HD support is bad. Yeah, because that's going to mke a difference in actually deciding on buying the system and everything. ??? Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: TraderJake on August 12, 2005, 01:46:36 PM For a lot of people, it will. Those who have High Def TVs sure would love to play their games in glorious 1080p, but they won't be able to if they buy the Revolution. However, They still should be able to use 480p, and it has been reported that 480p will be standard for the Revolution. That could be totally wrong given the nature of Nintendo, so we shall have to wait until Spaceworld or the TGS before anything concrete is revealed in that department.
Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Tynstar on August 12, 2005, 01:58:57 PM Quote Yeah, because that's going to mke a difference in actually deciding on buying the system and everything. ??? For me it will. I want it to look as good as possible. Game play is key and I will get it but I want HD support. And to all the people saying HD doesn't matter I have a questions. Have you ever seen a game in HD? Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Arrrhalomynn on August 17, 2005, 07:07:43 AM Well, it'll only be 300 euros, has been officially announced at the leipzig games convention.
http://www.webwereld.nl/articles/36812 There will be 2 sets, one with just the xbox 360 and a joypad, which will cost 299, and one with the xbox 360, a wireless joypad, a 20 gb hard disc, a headseat, a remote control and a bunch of cables for hdtv and networking, which will cost 399. Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Izret101 on August 17, 2005, 07:56:14 AM Well when it coems to the US like that i know i will be getting the one with all the stuff.
Just how much AFTER the system release i get that stuff will be the real question. Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Tynstar on August 17, 2005, 07:59:49 AM i will be getting the 399.99 one. I want to play some of the 360 games bad.
Title: Re: Breaking news: Xbox will be really expensive! Post by: Sauza12 on August 19, 2005, 10:01:52 AM Any spare cash i have is going towards saving for an X box 360. I am definatley getting the $400 dollar one though. To get all of the stuff that the core system is missing would cost an extra $200 or something like that.
I also think I'm gonna be getting Final Fantasy 11 on launch day. I heard a runor that Resident Evil 5 will be a launch title, but something tells me that is a bunch of BS. |
