Seldom do they make games like this anymore, folks.  Super C, the direct sequel to Contra, is a game so full of testosterone that you'll likely sprout hair on your eyeballs if you play it for too long.  It's a game about shooting, and then shooting some more.  Storyline?  Bah!  Innovative features?  Bah!  This game is about solid side-scrolling fun.

Do games like this still have a place on today's consoles (see Contra: Shattered Soldier for PlayStation 2)?  Are games like Super C only good because in 1990 developers weren't expected to weave intricate storylines into their games?  Or is this game an example of just how uninspiring and mediocre games were back in the bit wars days?  Has anything really changed, or are the complaints of gamers today mirrored in the games of the past?

another NES game I have but haven't played in years. I don't remember egtting too far with this one unlike Contra which I played through numerous times.

This is also one of my favorite 2-player games for NES.  I like the straight out action, and especially the power-ups.  I've always liked 2D shooters with powerups, as it just gives the game more variety.  As for the recent 3D action games, I think it's hard to compare them to older games like Super C.  In games like Super C there are let's say 10 things you can do at any point in the game, and let's say 1 or 2 of those things don't get you killed.  Whereas in current gen 3D games there are countless things you can do, much more open-ended, so you follow a different path every time you play it through, and with Super C you have to remember which enemy pops up where and get all the timing correct...but of course this doesn't apply to all games.   Either way I think it's always nice to take a break from the open-ended "do as you please" games to play something like Super C and have to actually pay attention to everything in the game ;)

There is most definitely a place for games like Super C on today's systems.  I think that there is a certain charm and simplicity to 2-D games that can't be accomplished in 3-D.  Sadly, the market for these kinds of games is dwindling at an ever-increasing rate, which doesn't really surprise me, but it's still dissapointing.

I remember when I could beat this game without cheating. Now I can't beat it cheating. 3d games ruin 2d skillz

You know that most sequels can be a let down at times. (mostly in the movie industry :P)

But this one knocked the ball out of the park. Super C is fantastic ! As pointed out before, this aint no walk in the park  ;)

You have gun fire and enemies flying everywhere  :o
Good luck not getting hit and killed ;) Seriously thought to myself back in the day when Contra came out :
"This game rocks and Konami broke the mold with this one"

Well not only did they break the mold, but they pounded out the old mold and beat a new and better one  :P

Slightly OT, I always loved Maddox's take on Contra 3.

It was a great game. I think there is still enough market for 2d-shoot 'em ups. THe market for games got bigger and there are enough people left who like the games. They will never be topsellers, but I think in lower runs the will sell out. The shoot 'em ups always sell good in the aftermarket, so I think some minor publishers will see a markt, also a lot of games will be budget at release as you already saw in Europe with the Gunbird Collection/ Psyviar Complete and Gradius V.

On the direct field of Contra about platform shoot 'em ups. There never been  a lot of games like these. Yes there is Metal Slug and a few more (Sunset Riders, Dolphin Blue), but I think it will be hard for other devolpers to get to the fame of Metal Slug or Contra.
