Title: Getting A PS2 Finally, What Games To Get?
Post by: Antimind on January 09, 2006, 05:04:08 AM
Basically I'm gettin this for RPGs and exclusives, not for online and other bullshit... Here's my current want list. I dunno what else to get offhand...

Dragon Quest VIII (this and Tales of Legendia are my reason for buying)
Star Ocean
Atelier Iris
Ys: Ark of Napishtim
Katamari Damacy
We Love Katamari
Gradius III & IV

Yup, not many reasons to buy a PS2 on my list there but those are about it. I would never have bothered if Namco would release Tales of Legendia on GC. It's all bout Tales dammit!

Silent Hill 2 is pretty cool. And I really liked Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance.

Well, the obvious games are Final Fantasy X and X-2, but you should also look out for Disgaea:  Hour of Darkness, Suikoden 3, 4, and Tactics, and Kingdom Hearts.

It's kind of expensive, but I'd say Guitar Hero.

tmk, although I don't own a PS2 (yet) there are a lot of exclusive fighters out there that are supposed to be pretty good. Tekken 5, Soul Calibur 3, and Virtua Fighter 4: Revolution come to mind.

Ohhh Gods of War. I have heard from everone that this is a good game. Makes me want to dust off the PS2 to play it.

I totally agree with the FF games and Kingdom Hearts.  Also, Metal Gear Solid 2, 3, and 4.

Check out Contra: Shattered Soldier.  Cool 2D Contra goodness.  I dunno if the new Castlevania is any good, but you may want to look into that as well.

Gun-Con games

Burnout games(though these can be had on other systems)

Ratchet and Clank was fun
Jak and Daxter was fun

Other than that the games that immediately come to mind have all been stated.

Was Sly Cooper any good?

Title: Re: Getting A PS2 Finally, What Games To Get?
Post by: Sauza12 on January 09, 2006, 02:03:27 PM
I don't know about Sly, but Castlevania is well worth the $10 price tag that it carries now.  It doesn't have the depth that the 2D games has, but it still has enough secrets to keep you looking for a while.

Oh I was talking about the new Castlevania.  Every place I see it is still $50.  There are two CV games on PS2, are there not?

Oh wow, thanks guys! Lotta stuff to check out. I own Growlancer Generations but can't play it cause it's in a box in the states at my friend's house. Don't recall if I mentioned that in my first post but from what I understand it's good *shrug* I'll start Dragon Quest VIII tonight. Let you all know what it's like :girl:

Dog's Life is an awesome game. I just finished playing it and beating it.  I wish more games like this would come out.  They need a cat's life!!  You will like this game especially if you like dogs.

All right (dammit). I'm going to use my Christmas gift cards and get myself a PS2 also.

Does anyone know if they have any good, exclusive mulitplayer games?

PS two player doesn't really even have many good two player games I can think of besides the fighting games.  Multiplayer is far better on GameCube and Xbox.

2 PS2 questions: 1. Does an 8MB memory card provide sufficient storage? 2. Can you play PS1 games on the PS2 and save to a PS2 memory card?

If your going to get a mem card def stick with Sony.
If your going to play more than a handful of games get kmore than one mem card.

It seesm that you don't play alot of "demanding" games memory wise though so it should be enough for you like it was for Scott.

Both myself, my bro and my cousin have filled up 8mb cards playing RPGs and games that have extra savable items that take up unnecesaary amounts of space.
(Metal Gear pictures THPS series park creations etc.)

nig?

2 cards shouldn't be too expensive now anyways.
It is cheaper to get one of those 2 card packs than to buy to seperately anyways.

Like 25$ for the blue and red Sony mem card thing and 15 or so for the single card isn't it?

This is the deal that I'm looking at:

Is that good? Or no?

Are you gettiung it in a store? The deal is good I think. Not great but good. If shipping is high I would say pass. Then again I am cheap.  :-/

I'm going to take it to the store & see if they will honor it. If not, then I'll just get the console + 1 controller (due to the gift card situation) and go to Circuit City for the memory card and a couple of games (again due to the gift card situation) to save some $.

I got it on my lunch hour!

Tyn, they did honor the bundle deal I posted above.

I passed on the extended warranty offer, though. Is that a good/bad move? It didn't seem worth it...

Title: Re: Getting A PS2 Finally, What Games To Get?
Post by: Tynstar on January 12, 2006, 10:09:48 AM
I would of passed. The system is only 150 right? Warranty was prolly 70 or more?

Title: Re: Getting A PS2 Finally, What Games To Get?
Post by: Izret101 on January 12, 2006, 10:31:16 AM
The only time your really going to want to get a warrenty now seems to be on the PSP.

Although Dan bought We <3 Katamari at TRU and that had holes in the DVD.
So there are always freak problems.
I am pretty sure TRU only will take back too if you get their protection policy.
Don't know.

The warranty was like $25/$30 or something for I think 2 years. The sales girl on the floor and the sales girl at the counter BOTH "recommended" that I get the extended warranty. That gave me the impression that they train their staff to ask every customer to buy an extended warranty on everything they sell, so that's why I said no.

One of the girls did mention that due to the smaller fan in the newer, slimmer version of the PS2 that it's more likely to overheat. Is there any truth to this?

Title: Re: Getting A PS2 Finally, What Games To Get?
Post by: Tynstar on January 12, 2006, 01:25:55 PM
I have no idea if they over heat more or less then the normal ones.

That better Anthony?

Title: Re: Getting A PS2 Finally, What Games To Get?
Post by: Izret101 on January 12, 2006, 03:38:44 PM
Well that was a coherent english sentance.

While it might make sense that it would over heat i don't think it is true.

Unles your leaving all the vents blocked and have it running for a few hours then yea probably.

But i can't remember hearing any instances of it over heating.
Not to say it never has or never will.
There is always the possibility and i could just be grossly misinformed.

Post by: Tynstar on January 12, 2006, 04:33:52 PM
Just the fact that it is a Sony system means it will have to potential to break more then the Xbox or Gamecube.

Title: Re: Getting A PS2 Finally, What Games To Get?
Post by: Lord Nepenthean on January 12, 2006, 04:36:18 PM
The laser might be more likely to break, but Microsoft systems are definitely more prone to overheating.  I've never heard of a PS2 overheating, but both Xbox and Xbox 360 have had big issues with this.

Title: Re: Getting A PS2 Finally, What Games To Get?
Post by: Tynstar on January 12, 2006, 04:41:28 PM
I will look through some Gamepros because now that I think about it I might have read in a buyers beware section that they over heat.

I worked at Gamestop for little over a year and I never heard some one say their GameCube or XBox broke down. My brother had a XBox break. It was teh CD drive.

Many Many many people bitched about their PS2. One guy came in to buy his 5th PS2 becasue the other 4 broke. We talked him into buying a XBox instead.

Seen 2 or 3 broken GCNs(one laser, one busted gear)
Dozens of broken PS2s(laser, busted ports, busted gears) None of these where slim line
Dozen or so busted Xbox (laser, DVDdrive)

Thats just at one local shop over the course of a year.
Nearly all of the damages where due to user fault too.

I got a plan on our's but that's because the last PS2 in this house ended up going out the back door when my man got pissed at a game. Fortunately this plan I have covers even tossed PS2s so long as all the parts are brought in... All for $20 Canadian...lol

I gues that means I need to give you back your copy of Disgaea. I still haven't tried it.

If you want to borrow any games I've got about 270 you can choose from.

The entire PS2 with game inside, controller and cables attached went out the back door and smashed on the walkway to the garage. The new one better not move from it's nice place on the entertainment center or there will be hell to pay ;)

One of the Metal Gears if I'm not mistaken... We don't have money to just throw around, he almost broke his 360 the other day. Woulda been devastating cause we're still paying the damn thing off! I'm just glad there are protection plans that cover smashed systems in existance.

I usually stop playing before I get to the point of system breakage.  I haven't got nearly enough money to risk that.

Picks them up and throws em or smashes em with a hammer. To him they aren't all that important, just somethin to kill time. Just don't like it when a game really pisses him off *shrug*
