Title: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: TraderJake on March 25, 2006, 11:27:48 PM Super Metroid
Week: 3.26.06-04.01.06 Game: Super Metroid Console: SNES Year: 1994 RFG ID: U-044-S-05780-A Publisher: Nintendo Developer: Nintendo Genre: Action/Adventure Players: 1 Game Page Address: http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/getinfo.pl?ID=U-044-S-05780-A& Screenshot Page: http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/screenshot.pl?ID=U-044-S-05780-A Super Metroid is good. Really Good. So good, it is in my top three games, jockeying between Chrono Trigger, and Link to the Past for best game in my opinion. This game just keeps calling you back. Beat it once, and you'll go right back, trying to beat your time, trying to sequence break, trying to get everything, or just screwing around. One thing is for certain though, play it once and it'll keep you coming back for more. Super Metroid is a gem and certainly does not disappoint. Gunpei Yokoi did a masterful job with this game, and I am sure most people on this forum will agree. Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Speedy_NES on March 26, 2006, 02:55:58 AM Another game that I've never played before...In a matter of fact, I've never played any Metroid game before (I'm still missing the first one in my NES collection as well)! :)
Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Izret101 on March 26, 2006, 05:08:20 AM Such a good game.
I borrowed it from my cuz to play years ago. I got 85% completion in 5-6 hours my first time thru. I could not put the game down. Highly recomended to any who hav not played it. Title: Re: Feat. Even though I don't have it in my collection anymore I remember playing this game a lot as a kid. This is how all Metroid games should be. NO more FPS!!!!!!!!! Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: TraderJake on March 26, 2006, 12:23:12 PM Quote Hallejuah!!  Someone else agress.  Super Metroid is the best Metroid game out there.  This FPS Metroid shit is bullshit.  They need to go  back to its roots... Be careful what you ask for, you could get another Metroid Fusion. Personally, I think the Prime Offshoot is really good, and was an excellent way to put Metroid into the 3D realm. No, I don't think that Prime is as good as Super Metroid, but it nonetheless is an excellent game. They did an excellent job turning Metroid into a 3D game, and I can't wait to see how Prime 3 utilizes the Revmote. I almost hope it is how the Revmote trailer suggested it would be like, that would be extremely cool. Interestingly enough, Metroid Dread although rumored to be cancelled is apparently still in development for the DS. The rumors state that it will be a hybrid 2D-3D engine similar to New Super Mario Bros. If this is the case, then that will be extremely cool. Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Dev1anc3 on March 26, 2006, 01:55:49 PM I remember renting this game the first week it came out... then I found myself working my ass off around my house trying to score some cash from my mom to go and buy it... which says alot for me because I'm a lazy bastard.
It paid off in the end, and as soon as I came back from Toys R' Us, I pretty much locked myself in my bedroom for a couple days. This game came out during the SNES's peak, and is easily one of the top 10 games for the console. Right up there with Super Mario World, The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past, Donkey Kong Country, and all of the other must haves for the SNES. Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: m3talst0rm on March 26, 2006, 02:11:16 PM I didn't have the pleasure of playing this game during the height of the SNES' success. However, I recently bought the game and love every moment of it...Of course, since playing the first one, I have become somewhat of a Metroid Fanboy... I love Prime, Fusion, the original, and the second for gameboy...I can't get enough. So far, however, Super Metroid is, in my opinion, the best one.
Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: danvx6 on March 26, 2006, 07:27:54 PM IMO, this game is the epitome of Metroid. The dark atmosphere; cool aliens (significantly cooler than any other aliens); great music; the sense of being all alone on a planet that is out to get you; the mother brain; the mazelike areas with so many secret passages it can be mind boggling; everything is perfect. Hopefully Metroid Dread ends up released, as the title implies some awesomeness. "Dread."
Hell Yes. Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: InvadErGII on April 05, 2006, 01:09:47 PM I'm late for the party on this one, but I can't pass up lauding this classic. Super Metroid is, in my opinion, the best video game ever made. The atmosphere, the action, the gameplay...all of it perfect. It's yet to be outdone, and I don't believe it ever will be.
Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Shimra on April 05, 2006, 05:06:06 PM Super Metroid is hands down the greatest game I have ever played. Nothing comes close or is even on the same level of perfection as that game. I have honestly played it for 500 or so hours. I used to speed run the game and back in the day had the 3rd fastest 100% time of 1:15. Then all the glitches were exposed and I just can't keep up.
Honestly though, there is always something to do in the game, be it a No boss/mini boss run that will cause you to break a controller or two, reverse boss run where you battle Ridley in a heated room with not varia, low percent run, or whatever, there is always something to do. Hands down my favorite game of all time. And to Tynstar saying this is how all Metroid games should be, no more FPS, I have to disagree and say that I believe Metroid Prime is the closest Metroid recreation to Super Metroid. I personally do not like Zero Mission as much as most people, and Fusion while completely awesome, strays too far from the Metroid formula. Prime however, plays nearly identical to Super Metroid, regardless of the fact it is a First Person ADVENTURE(I do not consider a FPS since it's major emphasis is on exploration) Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Mike Leon on April 05, 2006, 08:58:15 PM Quote I have honestly played it for 500 or so hours. That's no joke. I remember when he hooked a spare SNES up in his bathroom to play this game taking a crap. That was way back in the day. Super Metroid is easily a very serious contender for the title of best video game ever made. It's way better than any of the crap coming out for current generation systems, and it's better than pretty much everything before that too. Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Cham Zord on April 06, 2006, 11:14:37 AM I wouldn't say Super Metroid is the "best video game ever made," but it is certainly a masterpiece.
As for the whole view on FPS Metroid games, I actually like the FPS. As a matter of fact, I think I'll break the conformity and state that Metroid Prime (but not Metroid Prime 2: Echoes) is better than Super Metroid. (Yes, I have played and beaten both.) Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Tynstar on April 06, 2006, 12:19:56 PM I only played Metroid Prime for about 10 minutes. And all I thought was wow a first person shooter. To me it wasnt Metroid. Good game I'm sure it is but just give it a different name.
Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Mike Leon on April 06, 2006, 09:52:56 PM I felt exactly the same way. When I was done with Prime instead of saying "Wow, what a great game," I said "Hmmm, at least it kept me entertained for three days." It wasn't bad. It was just sort of generic and totally forgetable. I hardly remember anything about it, even though I know for a fact that I played through the whole thing.
Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: This Dude Abides on April 10, 2006, 02:21:30 AM Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time. Thanks for the great read!
Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Izret101 on April 10, 2006, 05:15:17 AM I tried to pick up a copy cheap on eBay but the price skyrocketed with like 10 mins left.
It was listed poorly but someone still found it besides me :-/ Eventually i will get lucky and get a nice copy for a relatively cheap price. I haven't played the game in too many years. Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Shimra on April 10, 2006, 10:10:53 AM It isn't really a rare game I believe, just high demand when new Metroid games come out. Wait until a bit since Prime Hunters just came out and you will probably be able to get it for cheap.
Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Izret101 on April 10, 2006, 10:28:22 AM Oh no its not rare at all. It was one of the million+ sellers and there are always scores of copies on eBay.
It is ALWAYS in demand though. Like Earthbound or ChronoTrigger. I amjust not willing to put out 30+$s on a copy right now (even if it is complete) Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Shimra on April 10, 2006, 01:19:02 PM You could always rom it if you absolutely can't find it and aren't morally opposed. In fact I play a rom instead of on the SNES since I actually think that it is easier to wall jump, shinespark and mochball.
Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Turbo852 on April 11, 2006, 03:02:47 PM I actually think playing on a real SNES is easier. If you have a USB controller, then you're fine, but using a keyboard that only allows three buttons to be pressed at once makes things hard.
Anyway, Super Metroid is one of my favorite games. I used to play it all the time when I was little. I drew fanart of many of the locations in the game. None of it was any good, but it was fun to make. I also wrote guides to beating the bosses, but I didn't really know any secrets back then. I just played through the game again a few weeks ago. It was actually my first attempt at a speedrun. I got a time of 2:55 with 30% completion. Yeah, I messed up a lot. A lot of my time was spent trying to learn the mochball and other special tricks to skip areas. I love wall jumping. Anytime (in real life) I come across two walls that are very close to each other, there is only one thing I can think of. I once found two walls perfectly spaced for wall jumping. It's too bad that those walls had a low ceiling... Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Shimra on April 11, 2006, 07:12:01 PM Keyboard is far easier once you get the hang of it. And as for mockball, make sure you are holding the jump button the entire time. Plus it is only useful for one part really, and that is getting the Super Missiles early. Other than that you need to learn horizontal shinesparks and single wall jumps if you plan on doing a speedrun. If it is a straight speedrun, a marker to tell how you are doing is that the first time that people generally save in it, they usually save twice, is right before going into the wrecked ship. If you are anywhere from 14-18 minutes consider yourself good.
I could go into a lot, and I mean a lot more detail about what items to skip completely, which missiles to get, etc if you want, but I may get carried away. Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Izret101 on April 11, 2006, 07:19:15 PM Write up a FAQ?
I know at least i would be interested in reading it. I love seeing or reading about this kinda stuff. Even more so about games i actually enjoyed playing at some point. Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: Shimra on April 11, 2006, 07:34:54 PM Way ahead of you.
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/game/588741.html Scroll down to the Faq submitted by Desincarnage. Me and Desincarnage as well as a few others compiled the most complete FAQ for Super Metroid ever known to man(I'm Notyou in the credits btw). We had a thread on gamefaqs for about two years where we would answer every single question people would ask regarding the game, from glitches, to framerate, anything. Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: CatchFiveBats on April 12, 2006, 05:33:17 PM I always get stuck in Metroid games (and Zelda games as well, actually), but I do enjoy them when I'm not stuck.
As for Metroid Prime, I think the FPA aspect is perfectly executed. The style of the game feels perfect to me, especially how the story is developed with no dialogue and only through information you find yourself. I think that really helps add to the "you-versus-the-world" feel. Also, I think that taking a series from its roots can be a very good thing. If no games ever did that, we'd all get bored really quickly. As long as the roots of the game are continued alongside the new style (i.e. Metriod Fusion, Zero Mission), I'm cool with it. Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: JWKobayashi on April 13, 2006, 11:27:21 AM Ack. I forgot about Super Metroid! One of my all time favorite games growing up (along with Chrono Trigger, Zelda LTTP and FF3). I'm going to have to hunt this one down. Awesome game.
I'll second (or like fifth) the comment about Prime just not feeling like a Metroid game. It was good, but I don't think that it encapsulated the atmosphere as well as the first three games did. What is this about Metrod Dread? A new Metroid game for the DS? In 2.5-D? Sweet! Hope we see more at E3. Title: Re: Feat. Game 3.26.06: Super Metroid Post by: TraderJake on April 13, 2006, 04:31:06 PM I am just speculating. It may or may not still exist. I am hoping it exists, and Samus is no longer wearing the crappy, crappy, fusion suit.
