Title: The Next-gen is Going to Suck
Post by: Mike Leon on May 08, 2006, 06:29:19 PM
Does anyone else feel this way? I'm not excited about the next generation consoles coming out at all. The 360 already sucks hard. The PS3 looks like it's going to be a $500 360. The Revolution -I don't even want to talk about anymore. I've decided Nintendo is the Terri Schiavo of the video game industry. Someone please just pull the plug so they can die in peace.

At this point I'm much more likely to buy an MVS than any of the next-gen consoles. It has better games, and it might be cheaper than some of them.

Hmm... I have to disagree.  I think the games nowadays are amazing.  Does the gaming industry have it problems defently, but they are great games out there and many great games waiting to be made.
I think gaming is like music, most people think the best music came out when they were young and the new music sucks (I feel like that with music). But the truth is that music and games are not worse just diffrent.  There were people in the 90's who said games then sucked and Atari made the best games ever.  It's all about what influenced you.

Just wait, many of the new games for new consoles arent exactly the best. BUT........

Here are a few that rock hard on the 360:
Elder Srolls
Call of Duty 2
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter

And those are just my current favorites. I know there are lots more. The graphics alone are enough to buy those titles, but gameplay is equally as great!

If you havent tried it or given it a fair shake, then you are really missing out. Dont let the price tag scare you off. In time it will drop, and until then, I am sure you have plenty of other stuff to play?

He has World of Warcraft.

360 has games i am interested in but too pricey.
Revolution(yes the Revolution) is stil looking alright to me.
PS3 has done nothing to entice me yet.

Why does everyone think teh XBox 360 sucks ass?

Each system has good games and shitty games. Games are just getting too expensive.

The thing I hate the most about games now are exclusive deals. The wosre is EA and the NFL and I dont even play football games.

I see consoles turning into PC's. I figure I'll save my money and keep my PC top o' the line. If PS3 gets cheap enough, or I have a sudden influx of funds, I'll grab one.

Gotta go so I can't finish my thought.

how do you fugure? A top of the line video card is 600 dollars ever 6 months or so. And that is just the video card. Consoples are still cheaper then a top end game PC.

Sure the video cards get better every six months but I exaggerated with my Top o' the line shpeel. Really I've got such a backlog of games that I can buy cheap video cards and play the games that work for them and then just keep climbing the never ending ladder. It may cost more than a console but the games are generally better and I can get 'em cheaper. Besides the world's gonna end soon anyways.

by that argument, leon, I could say "I have such a back log of games I will just buy a PS2 and Xbox and wait for the 360 and PS3 to drop in price."

True that.

It's not like you "need" a PS3 on luanch is it? Just wait for a price drop or something.

Yeah, well...I've got the same deal with my ps2. Use that argument if you want. Hell, you could play atari games for the rest of your life.

I would really like to stress that I have no interest in playing any next-gen systems at all, regardless of price. If the systems cost $1 I probably still wouldn't want them cluttering up my living room.

I feel like the industry has just been pumping out the same fanboy sludge for years. There are so many WW2 FPS it makes me sick, and all of them are just Medal of Honor (which wasn't even very good) with better graphics. The next generation is only getting worse.

As Captain_Nintendo pointed out, the 360 has lots of great killer apps:

Elder Scrolls 4? Better on PC.
CoD2? Better on PC.
Ghost Recon/Rainbow6 76 or whatever? Better on PC.

I think I'll rush out and buy a 360 right now!

As for PS3 the most exciting games don't look all that exciting either:

Tekken 6? Were there a 4 and 5? Does anyone care anymore?

Killzone? The graphics do look amazing but beyond that it looks like every other FPS.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Sons of Jesus Christ Kojima Just Did Six Tabs of Acid in the Bathroom and He Saw the Toilet Turn into a Winged Demon and Eat the Dev Kit OMGWTF! PS Snake is Old Now

I don't think the next-gen games will be unplayable or anything. I just don't see anything to get excited about. What I do see is game play innovation going out the window more and more in favor of Nazis with more polygons and crisper textures. That bugs me.

I do agree there is a ton of copy cat stuff. and those game might be better on a PC. But I for one don't liek playing games on my PC other then RTS games. I work on PC's all day I dont want to play games on them and they are a lot cheaper to play the biggest and best games then a PC.

And the title of the next Metal Gear game is funny as hell.

I am not a PC gamer.

Consoles all the way!

If i were to become a PC gamer i would demand too much from my PC.
I would either have to have a mega powerful one to run dual screen with normal PC functions on one screen and the game on another.

Or i would have to have 2 PCs running at once to accomplish the same effect.

As for the "Better on PC" arguement this has always been the case.
Home consoles always have been and will be inferior to high end PCs.

There is no way someone can refute the arguement.
But when comparing a 500$ console to a 500$ PC you generally will be getting more bang for your buck.

I don't think PC games are always better. It's just coincidental that all of the 360 games I picked on before fall into that catergory. FPS and RTS games are pretty much automatically better because you get to use a mouse. The mouse is that big of a deal for those games. It still boggles my mind that more console games don't have mouse support. Why would you want to play a game like Counterstrike or Call of Duty with a controller instead of a mouse/keyboard?

Aside from FPS and RTS games, I have always thought console games are better. You plug them in and they work. You don't have to worry about windows conflicts or drivers of hardware compatibility. They're less hassle, and they can be optimized for uniform hardware much more efficiently than PC games that have to run on 1000 different configurations of machines. In general, I would say console gaming is better. Which is why it seems so bizzare to me that a lot of the most popular games out there right now have much better PC counterparts. It's even stranger that the trend seems to be growing with the next generation. That's just another part of what bothers me about the next generation.

I hate using the mouse on FPS games. Does that make me insane? I honestly like a controller better.  ;)

I wish consoles would pick up on the Mouse / Keyboard as well. I'm not much of a PC gamer, but it makes no sense not to for FPS's. I remember playing on Quake 3 for the Dreamcast using Sega.net with a controller, and I'd always get owned and treated like a handicap by people using a KB and mouse, until I finally ended up getting a mouse to surf the web with (sega.net FtW!!), and actually tried using it for Q3. After that, I never played a FPS on the Dreamcast with a controller again. ImO The control you have with a KB and mouse in a FPS cannot be touched by any controller accept maybe the new "Wii-mote", and that's still to be determined. ...Sega knew this 6 years ago.

Fullscreen games lock the mouse to the main screen and you would not be able to use the second screen while playing the fullscreen game.  2PC's is the only good way to accomplish that.

It is not surprises that they my be better but most people cant afford to play the top games every year. PC gaming is like buy a new Xbox 360 every year. TOO DAMN EXPENSIVE!!!!!

Hey, good post.

I think one of the issues with keyboard and mouse in relation to consoles is that first of all it's ackward to use sitting on the floor in front of a television and secondly  its two additional perepherals other than a joystick to have dangling off of your console in front of the TV.  I had the keyboard on the Dreamcast as well, but it was just weird having it around my TV.

I think the Wii controler will  be good in that it's wireless, but I'm not sure about the attachment.  It's probably going to be a mess to have 4 controllers and all their attachments all over the place.

But I totally agree that mouse and keyboard is the best way to play games like FPS and RTS, I'm just not sure if I want them attached to my console.

I think some new games are really good and I think a lot of newer music really is worse.

I doubt if I'll own a 360 or a PS3 for a long time. I know they have unique architecture that allows a few special things but it seems absurd to spend more on a game console than a good PC would cost, and most new games have PC ports.

I think the Next-Gen will be okay. Right now the Next-gen is become the current -gen and it will take some time for the better games to truly come to life. It is still to early in the day to say that the Next-gen will suck. There will be PC ports of some of the Games but not all of them. In time I thing people will come to enjoy the Next-gen, just have to give it some time.

As the next gen unfolds, I think we'll be seeing more and more games that can be played on either the PC or a next gen console due to the processing power that the next gen consoles (esp. 360 and PS3) will be capable of handling. Console exclusives will therefore be less frequent than they are in the current gen, imo.

That being said, of course high-end PCs can and will be capable of more things than a console...as long as you keep up with the PC technologies required. I personally have no interest in upgrading my PC every 6 months when I can just get a capable console and not have to worry about upgrading it at all for 3+ years. Others have no problem with PC upgrading.

It all comes down to where you want to invest your money in order to get the gaming experience you desire at the time. My PC is 6 years old now, and I'm perfectly happy with just playing "light" PC games (i.e. Zelderex, online Poker, etc.) on it because I get more enjoyment out of console gaming. Everyone is different. There really is no "better".

All I do on PC now is multiplayer. Counter-Strike, Battlefield 2 and Call of Duty 2 are the only games that I turn on my machine for.
