Title: I got a scanner but...
Post by: Kevincal on July 19, 2006, 09:04:22 PM
...I don't have the setup software cd it came with, so therefore I can't scan anything...Is there a way to get this thing working without the cd?  The person I'm borrowing it from has the cd but can't find it atm, cus they are a terrible house keeper!!!   :slick:

If you know the make and model you should be able to go to the Manufacturer's website to download the drivers / software. HP is especially good with this.

Ok so I found a program on the net that converts picture files, so I converted the .tif to jpeg all by myself!  Awesome!

You should be able to change what type of image file the scans are saved as.  That being said, .TIFF images are actually higher quality that .JPEG.  TIFF is a "lossless" format, meaning the image is compressed, but none of the image's information is lost.  A JPEG image will lose quality every time it is saved.   Most browsers support TIFF, and the microsoft image viewer can also support it through an upgrade.

Nice work Kevincal. Nice to see you got a scanner just for the site. That is the same reason I got one.

Here's what you *could* do. You *could* download a copy of Photoshop from one of those horrible internet fileshare programs. Photoshop has pretty much all the software you'll need to use your scanner in whatever way you please. Of course, that would be stealing a perfectly affordable $700 software package. You could also be persecuted or ostracized, as no one downloads copyrighted material in this righteous and God-loving country.

Also, remember that while TIFF files are lossless, they are exponentially larger in size.

Thanks, but actually I got the all-in-one scanner/printer for Xmas a year and a half ago, but at that time my sister was in college, so I loaned it to her for a long time. Then I came to this site and wanted to start helping submit information and scans, so I realized I had a use for the scanner and snagged it back from her.  :)

@ Evil Lion.  I actually figured out how to change it from TIFF to JPEG with the help of people from this site.  It was really easy.  It's just that I had never had a scanner before so all of this is new to me.

Now, maybe I'm doing something wrong, but my scanner also saves everything to a .tif file.  What I did was after I edited the image, I just saved the file name as .jpg from .tif in the image editor.  Couldn't you just re-save all of your files with .jpg to change the format?

Yep that's what I started doing after some help from one of the moderators here.  :)

What type of scanner is it?   Try going to the manufacturers website, they might have all of the stuff you need for download there.
