Title: IGN reader's top 100 games of all time.
Post by: Shimra on October 27, 2006, 02:44:13 PM

Overall I think the list is surprisingly good, if not a bit too mainstream. I would have loved to see Donkey Kong Country 2 or Gunstar Heros and some other old classics on the list, but overall I was quite surprised to say the least.

Meh - I think it's kinda crappy.

It was made by people that only play certain games.

I'm surprised by the top 10, I thought it was *pretty* good, could have been better, but I thought the rest were meh. It seemed pretty skewed to the current / soon to be the last generation.

These lists will never please most people...I mean, there are sooo many great games that have been made in the last...25+ years that it's impossible to break it down to which is best.  It would be better if they didn't # the games...just top 100 all time in no order...

Did I miss it, or was there a complete absence of anything Genesis.  I didn't even see a Sonic game on the list.  List should have been name "Top 100 Games made by Nintendo, Konami, and Sony".

The list seems like it was made by kids born after 1990.  Half were Six-gen games and not one Atari games.  Smackdown 2006 was rank above Super Mario Bros :speechless:.

In cases like this I think it would be better to release a list without rank.  There is no way to make everybody happy, but it gets much much harder when ranks are involved.

Lists are 'tarded unless everyone has their own.

I have seen much worse lists. This one was pretty good.

I would have been so pissed if Perfect Dark was ranked higher than GoldenEye.

And where was the Mortal Kombat???
lol

There was a very limited console representation though....

RFgeneration's top 100 games of all time. Who made this list? Jeez, it has my hero at place 1, who even played that?

IGN readers need to get off my lawn.

Metal Gear Solid at number 10

At least there was plenty of SNES love.

Hmm, I thought there had to be three ratings before the game would show up in the top 100, but Bangai-O has only 2... hmm...

I'll go on a limb and say that the people who made this list are the people that would purposefully bomb a title so it wouldn't rank high on the list anymore. Not naming names, but some people really have it out for Nintendo games.

I coulda sworn Gunstar Heros, Phantasy Star II and Sonic 2 were on the list, but maybe I'm thinking of a previous year's edition.

While I thought the list was horible for the most part, I did find it interesting that one title was included that was import only for the system it was listed as.  Sure, it's available for a later release system but the game was only released in Japan and Europe for the system credited to.  Can anyone else name it?

Well, the genesis was a pretty lousy console. Tucked inbetween the great master system and the less great saturn, it really didn't have a lot to offer. It had mostly rehashed 8 bit games and games that tried to be more than the console could handle. Whereas the SNES was far ahead of it's time and really pushed gaming forward. I thought it was generally agreed, even among sega fans, that the genesis was a bit of an outcast, the 'odd cousin' if you will.

Just look at the facts:
- The SNES beat it. Saleswise, but also gamewise. Compare any game that was released on both consoles and you'll see the SNES is always the winner.
- Even the NES beat it, saleswise.
- They kept making Master System games till the saturn was released, even longer.
- It got 2 attachments, the 32X and the Sega CD. Both failures were desperate attempts to blow some life into an already dying system
- The same can be said about releasing a revamped version of the console; the sega genesis 2. Another desperate attempt to get the console into the public eye.
- Sega never looked back after it stopped making the damn things. Is there even a single sequal to a genesis game released for the Saturn? I think not. The thing has no legacy whatsoever.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not an anti-sega fanboy. I actually have a genesis, but solely for its novelty value. I can't imagine I'll ever play a game on it again.

that list is just shit, you know for a fact that all them RPG's on there are only listed as people have heard they were good but not actullay played them.

And yeah it does seam like a list by people that were born after 1990

in europe maybe, but the SMS was a far distant second in the US and wasnt on most peoples radar

uh... mortal kombat?

for total shipped perhaps, but Sega was number 1 in the US in the years that mattered most, 91, 92, and 93

in europe and brazil, the SMS was dead by 92 stateside

Sega CD was not a failure, it had more than 3 years of shelf life, and well over 100 titles, it sold more units and had more titles than the SMS.  It wasnt a runaway success, but it was far more popular than systems like the jaguar, cdi, and 3DO - (the 32X was a flop, but that was due to the premature release of the Saturn)

whenever a company releases a second version of a console to reduce the price, this is a sign of success.  all of the giants have second hardware revisions... the Atari 2600, Intellivision, NES, SNES, and the Playstation 1 and 2

thats more of a knock on the saturn than the genesis.  the dreamcast brought back lots of genesis franchises (sonic and ecco are the prime examples while toejam and earl III was orginally a DC project, and chakkan was a cancelled DC project)

but you were 9 years old and not in the states during the heyday of the 16 bit wars, and really have no idea of what you are talking about

It is mostly a regional thing.  The Genesis was much more successful in the US than it was anywhere else in the world.  Thanks to the excellent programming of sports games for the Genesis, it could have been the breakthrough system that the Playstation was.

oh yeah

Are you disturbed?  The only thing that stood out on the Genesis version was the inclusion of blood.  Otherwise the SNES was all over the Genesis there.  A good example of a game being better on the Genesis is any of the Madden games, NBA live games, or NHL games.  Sega beat Nintendo like a theif on sports games.

i thought he was referring to sales numbers not quality...

but either way, sega beat out the SNES on most action/sports games, including MK

the graphics werent there, but the controls were far tighter.  a proper 8 way D-pad and a proper 6 button arcade button alignment didnt hurt either

it wasnt 'just blood', like the revisionists like to preach

I think you got this wrong the MegaDrive was a giant system in England and hardly anyone i knew had sports games in fact other than the gay Soccor most sports games dont sell very well here.

isnt that all that really sells sports wise on your side of the pond?  in the US its mostly football, with basketball, baseball and hockey doing ok, but nowhere near the monster numbers Madden and NCAA put up every year

i dont know i hate the sodding game but your average tosser seams to like if though god knows why? Normaly big selling games here have lots of killing and big guns in them and maybe some platfroms as anything else might take just a little bit too much thought.
that or jump on the next bandwagon like how many people bought Final Fantsy VII never having even heard of it and neevr buying another or any RPG

Have you ever even seen  the UK charts of videogames? I assume you haven't, beccause if you had, you wouldn't have said what you said. Look at this: http://www.elspa.com/?c=/charts/uk.jsp

And how does playing a game in a certain genre for the first time make you 'jump on the next bandwagon'?
