Title: Thinking about getting an Xbox.
Post by: Tondog on January 24, 2007, 06:17:13 PM
I'm thinking about picking up an original Xbox, and I'm just wondering what are some of the good games out there for it. Don't recommend Halo or Halo 2 to me, I really don't like that series. Tell me what the best platformer and adventure games are for it.

I didn't say I AM going to get one. I'll consider it if i find at least 15 or 20 games I'm interested in for it.

Right now the list is:

Conker Live and Reloaded
Psychonauts (Love the PS2 version)
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee
Jet Set Radio Future
Shenmue 2
Gunvalkyrie
Ninja Gaiden

I thought the controls on Conker Live and Reloaded suck ass.

Some exclusives that are worth picking up are...
Forza Motor Sports
Project Gotham Racing 1 and 2
Sid Mier's Pirates!
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Dead Or Alive Ultimate, and DOA 3
Spy Vs. Spy  (but it's an aquired taste)
Phantom Dust
DOOM 3

...  and the many multiconsole games that look way better, load faster, and sometimes have custom soundtrack options on the XBox.

Panzer Dragoon Oorta
DoA Ultimate and DoA3
Doom 3
The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind

pretty much the same stuff DevIancE said.  Oh, and the better ports on the cross platform titles of course.  (Advent Rising, Beyond Good and Evil, the GTA series, Star Wars: Battlefront I&II, KotOR I&II, etc.)  Some decent PC tie-ins are out there too.

Just do yourself a favor and don't get Counter Strike or Star Wars: Obi-Wan.

Otherwise, your list looks fairly solid.  Conker's is a good choice because its the same game as the n64 version with a few changes. (and an uninspiring third-person shooter tacked on the side)

oh and for the gag suggestions

Big Bumpin'
PocketBike Racer
Sneak King

OK, seriously.  These three are definitely worth their price tag (and the burger and fries you had to buy to get them).

I know I was just giving you grief. But you are moving towards the darkside ;)

I know, I know. I'm just as shocked as you are. Maybe I'll get a 360 in 5 or 7 years as well!  :o :o :o

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance  (an adventure / rpg type game)
Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge (action / adventure)
Destroy All Humans
JSRF: Jet Set Radio Future

Just platformers or action based?

Arx Fatalis and Fable ain't bad. Least on PC

Fable: The Lost Chapters is the one to get, it has a lot of added content to it. The original Fable, while good, is too short.

Action based is ok, just no FPS games.

Over the shoulder view? Ghost Reacon Series.

Meh. Seems too slow paced  from what I've played.

Arx Fatalis is FPHacker, can't remember if you can play in third person, I think there's a toggle although I may be having Morrowwind and Oblivion flashbacks.

JADE EMPIRE (yes that had to be in caps)
fable is also good.
the suffering
the suffering: ties that bind
shenmue 2
Spikeout: battlestreet (awesome beat em up)
xyanide (weird space shooter, worth the purchase)

I might have to try Spikeout. Is it Streets of Rage 2 good?

From the looks of things there might be more to xbox than meets the eye. It seems like I might have to dig deeper to find the games I want than with other consoles because xbox games tend to get overshadowed by Halo and its ilk. Other than Psychonauts, Vexx, and Conkers, what kind of platformers are there on xbox? Those tend to be my favorite type of game and it seems like they are hard to come by over on xbox.

I have heard  Metal Arms: Glitch in the System is fun but not sure if it is a platformer or not.

It is a fun game and it can be picked up really cheap.

I remember playing a demo of that for PS2 a long time ago. What I don't remember, however, is if it was any good.

I was going through my Xbox collection and found a couple of titles you may enjoy.

- Voodoo Vince (Platform)
- Freedom Fighters (Action)
- Fuzion Frenzy (Misc.) This game is a must!
- Worms Forts Under Siege (Action/Puzzle?) Great Game

Just a few different ideas.

If you're looking for platformers, here are my suggestions:

-Blix (I love this game, but I think I'm in the minority)
-Buffy (The first one...kinda a platformer, kinda FPS)
-Jet Set Radio (Great!)
-Second Sight (Mostly over-the-shoulder FPS, but with a little thinking involved)
-Voodoo Vince (Another great one)
-ToeJam & Earl 3 (Pretty fun platformer, IMO)
-Crimson Skies (Not a platformer but one to check out)

I enjoyed Buff as well. I think Indiana Jones was made by the same people that did Buffy so that might be good.

Indiana Jones is pretty fun. It's alot like Tomb Raider though.
Toe Jam & Earl 3 is fun if you have 2 players. It gets kinda' old with one player.
Castlevania: Curse of Darkness is pretty good, though the stages are pretty bland and repetitive.
If you're into football, definetly pick Sega ESPN NFL 2K5. It's sweet as hell, has custom soundtracks, and can be bought for $1.99 at Gamestop/EB.

Indiana Jones was like Tomb Raider with one exception.

It kicked ass.
