Title: Collection Suggestion Post by: NES_Rules on January 28, 2007, 06:33:23 PM I recently found out that Digitpress ended their collection feature. Apparently it was a couple months ago, but I just didn't realize it. I used the feature as well as RFG's because it had the scarcity function built into it. So I was wondering if it is possible to add it to this site's collection tools.
Title: Re: Collection Suggestion Post by: St0rmTK421 on January 28, 2007, 08:42:17 PM Rarity and scarcity have been discussed before at RFGen. We currently don't have a system set up to rate games by rarity, nor do we have the staff to keep these ratings up to date. It may be considered again lfurther down the road as our database becomes more complete and as we gain more staff to help us upkeep it, but for the immediate future I don't think it would be feasible.
Title: Re: Collection Suggestion Post by: Tynstar on January 29, 2007, 01:46:36 AM WOW they ended it! I would be pissed if I spent a lot of time entering games into my collection.

Also, StormTK421 "Eddie" hit the nail on the head with his answer. Title: Re: Collection Suggestion Post by: Pop Culture Portal on January 29, 2007, 01:31:31 PM I had no idea DP had taken down their collection feature. Bet there was alot of hate mail going around for those people that spent massive amounts of time entering their collection.
I really like the idea of rarity ratings...kinda puts an additional spin on the whole "collecting" idea. But, where would we get the info for rarity to begin with? Atari Age has a nice guide for Atari games and DP did have a good one for everything else. Other than swipping the rarity guides from these two places (which they probably wouldn't like), I'm not sure how you'd go about researching rarities. Plus, there aren't that many price guides out there for games, except DP's books. Just thinking out loud.... :hmm: Title: Re: Collection Suggestion Post by: St0rmTK421 on January 29, 2007, 03:02:20 PM That's another good point. DP did have their guide that they sold, so to enter the rarity numbers into their system, they just grabbed them from the book. We don't have that convenience unfortunately. Our staff members would have to do all the research on the rarity of the games by hand, except that they wouldn't get paid. And as you said, I'm sure some people would accuse us of stealing rarity values from other guides.
It's something that I would really like to do, but I really don't see any easy way to maintain it. Title: Re: Collection Suggestion Post by: NES_Rules on January 29, 2007, 04:13:31 PM I thought we could just get the rarity rating from DP's site, I didn't think of it as "stealing" though. I guess it does make sense though that DP wouldn't like us just using all their hard work.
Title: Re: Collection Suggestion Post by: Tondog on January 29, 2007, 04:20:28 PM I think NES_Rules has the right idea. But I think that RFG should contact DP and maybe they can cross promote sites.
Title: Re: Collection Suggestion Post by: Speedy_NES on January 29, 2007, 04:53:38 PM WOW they ended it! I would be pissed if I spent a lot of time entering games into my collection. I think it was linked to their old forums software, and when they upgraded it, both the blogs and collection tools were removed. Title: Re: Collection Suggestion Post by: Tynstar on January 29, 2007, 05:01:13 PM Nice "upgrade"
Title: Re: Collection Suggestion Post by: Dev1anc3 on January 29, 2007, 10:17:42 PM I took the time to enter my entire collection on DP about a year ago, but someone over there that is pretty high up, and a real asshole, pissed me off to the point where I no longer went over there... so I could care less about my collection stats being deleted. It does suck for the many people over there, that frequented the site, and kept their collection info updated, especially the ones with over 1,000 games.

I have heard that story before. Let's not make this a bash DP thread. Just to let everyone know... the collection of the site is the cornerstone of our site... we would never do anything that would remove this feature except under the most dire of circumstances. So take solace in knowing that so long as the server doesn't royally screw anything up your collection stats are safe here, and we'll be even safer once take 2 of the mySQL driven collection system is launched. Title: Re: Collection Suggestion Post by: Tynstar on January 29, 2007, 11:47:13 PM I know I am sorry.
Title: Re: Collection Suggestion Post by: Dev1anc3 on January 30, 2007, 04:24:05 AM Yeah, ditto. I was just venting... ,BUT IF THEY DON'T LIKE IT THEY CAN... whoops, there it goes again. I'll try to contain myself. :P
It's cool to know that our collections here are safe. I submited my collection into IGN, DP, 1UP, and Gamespot, but haven't even updated those since I discovered this place. This is definetly the best video game collectors site on the enterweb ... 4 shizzie. Title: Re: Collection Suggestion Post by: captain_nintendo on January 30, 2007, 08:34:09 AM Let's not make this a bash DP thread. Especially since they are one of our "affiliates" ;) Maybe we could work something out where we could use the rarity guide, but we would NEVER use anybody else's work unless we had prior permission. :) Title: Re: Collection Suggestion Post by: Tynstar on January 30, 2007, 10:07:53 AM To be honest I don't want anything to do with a rarity guide. At least not for many many years. I would rather do one thing very well (collection tool) that a bunch of stuff OK.

Title: Re: Collection Suggestion Post by: Dev1anc3 on January 30, 2007, 02:00:43 PM It would be cool to do if some one had that eBay feature that I've heard about, that shows what specific items have sold for in the last 90 days or how ever long it was for. eBay sent me an E-Mail about this feature, but it was too high, and I'd never use it. It would come in handy for a price guide though. You'd just have to have a LOT of people to keep stuff like that up to date.
I don't think it would be a good idea to use DP's guide, as I know for a fact that some of the prices / rarities they have listed are way off, plus that's their cornerstone, and since they nolonger have collections, their rarity guide, and their large community are about the main things that keep people coming. Besides, they put alot of time and effort into their rarity guide, and I doubt they would want to whore it out to another site. Title: Re: Collection Suggestion Post by: Fuyukaze on February 02, 2007, 12:12:14 AM In a perfect world it would be great if we could have an accurate rarity guide for the games. The problem is I dont believe anyone on staff currently has the time, let alone the means to build one as there's so many factors to take into consideration ranging from region shortages/surpluss, to games getting released in only specific regions. I have alot of free time, but there's no way I have the energy or money to drive all over Houston let alone all over Texas to try building such for just this state alone. It would be better to just contact the companies themselves to see if they would admit how many copies of each game was produced. I'm against using DP's guide not because I have anything against them, but because that's their work they poured time and energy into. I'd consider it stealing if used against their permisiion and just plain lazy even with it. I agree with Tynstar as well. Start with the collection tool and get that built up before moving on to things like rarity and price guides.
Frankly, I'd rather see strat guides added before I saw rarity/price guides added. |
