Of all the gaming blogs out there I would say that Kotaku is by far the best run and most interesting gaming blog of the bunch. They seem to update a lot more than their principal competitor, and their stories seem to be much more interesting.

Earlier today, Kotaku received a rumor regarding the PLAYSTATION HOME (http://kotaku.com/gaming/sony/rumor-sony-to-unveil-playstation-home-240746.php). In short, PLAYSTATION HOME is on the outside what appears to be the bastard lovechild of the Mii Channel and Microsoft Experience Points. Kotaku asked Sony about the rumor, to which they replied "Sony does not comment on rumors or speculation." However, that what not all they said, they also mentioned that if Kotaku went live with the rumor that Sony would blackball the site. Kotaku decided to go live with the rumor, and has since been blacklisted by Sony (http://kotaku.com/gaming/top/sony-blackballs-kotaku-240860.php).

Personally, I get three things out of this debacle:

• PLAYSTATION HOME is real
• Brian D Crecente showed a lot of guts to go through with publishing the story although he knew of the consequences
• Sony likes to really make themselves look bad

So, what are your thoughts on the debacle? Was Kotaku within their rights to publish the story, or did they cross the line? Did Sony overreact? Whatever you think, discuss here.

So them being blackballed means what? Sony what do interviews with them?

I'm with Sony here. If I were them I wouldn't want any possible information about whatever big announcement they are making at GDC next week to get out early.

Oh well, everyone is going to spin this into a negative Sony thing. Whatever, I just don't give a shit anymore. I've gotten to the point where I pretty much ignore almost all negative PS3 news because most of the time it's inaccurate.

Look, basically what Crecente did was say "fuck you" to Sony. No wonder they blackballed him.

Being blackballed is the equivalent of being blacklisted. Pretty much Sony receives a lot of bad publicity through those who read Kotaku, and Kotaku loses any inside info, and the ability to have a debug PS3.

Sony reacted very badly I might add. Another Lik-Sang story here. An indirect admission of truth combined with a threat. That's class. If they had of just not commented they wouldn't have shot themsleves in the foot and blew the rumor wide open.

I guess Sony's announcment of an all new innovative social feature of custom avatars and gaming achievments that's never been done before won't be new news any longer. Before you know it Microsoft and Nintendo will copy Sony and make their own....... ::)

Crecente stood up for freedom of the press and freedom of speech instead of dropping his pants so Sony can fuck his website in the ass with their agenda. He took a stand against censorship...and WON!

And you ignore negative PS3 news because you're a Sony fanboy trying to justify them. So you go right ahead and bend over for Sony...and then suck it off when they're  finished...and then pay them 600 dollars for letting them do it to you.

I certainly don't mean to be this insulting...it's nothing personal to you, Tondog. I'm just sick of the blind eye that gets turned to Sony's inherent flaws by their fanboy support base.

Where's the objectivity? Where's the consideration for both sides of the story? If Kotaku didn't run the story, for damn sure there would be another website that would!

Oh piss off phoenix. There are two...1+1...of us "Sony Fanboys" on this forum and we aren't even really Sony fanboys. I can't talk for Ton but I for one haven't abandoned Sony because they have delivered for my video game wants and needs in the past and I see no reason to abandon them. This Sony hate which has gripped the internet is downright weird.

Anyways, look around, obviously one will see many more Sony haters than Sony Fanboys out there. Give us a break, don't flame us for giving our side of the story.

I think Phoenix means Sony fanboys in general (not just "you 2").

And it's that way for any fanboy really. They turn the blind eye to any mistake or flaw their precious company has.

....Sony throws the toys out the pram

It's not my point that it's "us two" that he's attacking, it's that we, as Sony Fans, have, for whatever reason, become a targeted minority. Well I for one am tired of it, this console racism must end. I have a dream...

Yeah. I'd like nothing more than for all of us to get along. Seriously. There's no reason why we can't objectively view each side's position. As long as we're communicating well.

I guess the final straw that pisses me off is when a company wants to censor a story to suit their own ends.

I ABSOLUTELY HATE CENSORSHIP! In all forms. And if anyone tries to defend a censoring position, I'll be the first to attack them...vehemently. Again, it's nothing personal. I just have strong beliefs on the matter.

Granted, Sony should go after the source of the leak instead of the recipient but still, I think both sides stepped a little futher outside the  lines than necessary. Sony should have said please and Kotaku should have said OK.

I wonder if Sony would of tried to pull the same shit to a major US news paper or gaming magazine. Or if they would of done the same shit to that huge Japanese gaming mag. I can't think of how to spell it. I know it starts with an "F".

Also I started to hate Sony long before the PS3 was talked about. The PS2 is a great machine with great games. I have a PS2 but it doesn't mean I always have to like them. I just hate their arrogance.

I really have to say that Kotaku did the right thing in publishing the information. I read the article, and they even said in the article that "We just received a very interesting tip that, while juicy and quite believable, we're labeling as rumor for now. "


A rumor! The information is probably correct, and was probably leaked. I can see why Sony would be upset, but the stance they took was wrong (IMO).  Kotaku does have the right to publish things like this. (they did label it a rumor afterall)

You know, I really didn't care more about any of the companies involved in the next gen war in the begining.  I always took the stance that I'm going to buy them all anyways, and I'll get plenty of enjoyment out of all of them.  It seems like Sony is going out of it's way to make people hate them.

Maybe it is some sort of anti-Sony movement behind all of this, but it seems like all I hear about Sony and the PS3 is bad news.  Sony sues Lik-Sang into oblivion.  PS3's wide variety of reported malfunctions.  This Kotaku thing.  On top of that, things like this http://kotaku.com/gaming/top/sony-says-ps3-shortages-fixed-by-may-eh-240245.php lead me to believe that Sony is under the impression that every single gamer is dead from the neck up.  To a certain extent, they have earned the right to have a bit of swager.  I mean hell, they realeased 2 of the biggest, if not THE biggest, consoles of all time.  But they are rapidly eroding any consumer support with these bone headed moves.

But back on topic, I think Sony is absolutley in the wrong here.  Video game journalists release these kinds of rumors every single day.  Hell, EGM has an entire article dedicated to rumors like these.  For Sony to decide that they don't want that to happen anymore and throw thier weight around like this is just plain insulting.  I think Crecente did the proper thing.  Liek Tan said, it's not even like this is something new.  From what I've read, it's the same thing that both of the other systems already have.

Please, I want to buy a PS3.  Don't make it so that I feel like a traitor or mindless sheep when I do get one.

If I'm such a Sony fanboy, then why do I have a Nintendo Wii sitting right next to my PS2? Why do I have a DS instead of a PSP. Sony fanboy? Me? Not really.

I'm only sticking up for them because they seem to get a lot of misdirected hatred towards them. And yes, I do agree that 600 might be a bit much for the PS3 at this point. In the future it might be worth that price, but not really as of right now.

You can say the same exact thing about any console manufacturer. Be it Nintendo and their limited hardware specs, lack of online play, and lack of games or Microsoft and their failure rate of the 360. Every manufacturer has fanboys that ignore the flaws.

That my stance here as well. I don't see any need to leave Sony because they have always provided most of my video gaming needs, and for the rest I have Nintendo. Microsoft would be a contender to take over for Sony if they got a wider lineup of games on their 360.

Like what? My roomate's PS3 has never had a problem.

What a bunch of bullshit.  If Sony didn't want anyone to know they shouldn't have said anything or they should have all parties told to sign a legal document saying they can't release information until they give the word.  Kudos to Kotaku for showing some muscle and not being bullied by Sony.

Of course, these aren't problems with every single unit and I'm sure that the majority of PS3's will run fine.  Hell outside of overheating, the problems aren't even that big of a deal.  It's just that that is one more example of Sony screwing things up which can really cause problems with consumer support.  Of course I admit that the PS3 problems are nothing compared to the 360's problems.
