Title: Featured Game - Sonic & Knuckles - 3/20/07 Post by: Mezmoron on March 20, 2007, 08:42:51 PM
Sonic & Knuckles Week: 3/20/07-3/27/07 Game: Sonic & Knuckles Console: Sega Genesis Year: 1994 RFG ID: U-040-S-05290-A Publisher: Sega Genre: Action/Adenture Players: 1-2 Game Page Address: http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/getinfo.pl?ID=U-040-S-05290-A& This week is a tribute to one of the oddest shaped cartridges ever made. Sonic & Knuckles is a great game that goes well beyond just the title. Playing as Knuckles in the other games is just plain fun. Ever play this fast paced Sonic game? What did you think? Please, discuss! Title: Re: Featured Game - Sonic & Knuckles - 3/20/07 Post by: James on March 21, 2007, 07:42:27 AM I think Sonic & Knuckles was the second best Sonic. Sonic 2 comes first for me. S&K looks great with its colours, has expanded gameplay over Sonic 1 and 2, and can be played with the others, expanding the gameplay of those Sonics.
While Sonic 3 was good, it was just a bit "meh". Knuckles used the advanced gameplay from 3 and put them into some exciting levels. To me, it was also fairly tricky. Sonic 3 was too easy. I like how Knuckles can glide, grab, and punch enemies (from a glide). I think Sonic & Knuckles was a great game. Was S&K one of those carts that allowed other carts to be plugged into it? For some reason I don't remember its backward compatibility with Sonic 1 and 2... Title: Re: Featured Game - Sonic & Knuckles - 3/20/07 Post by: James on March 21, 2007, 09:57:31 AM Sonic 2 and 3 can be plugged into the top of the S&K cartridge, so you can play as Knuckles in those games. Using Sonic 1 comes up with the bonus levels from S&K, I think.

I remember Sega hyping this game for like months before it came out, and playing demo versions on kiosks, and on Sega Channel months before it was released... Sonic's popularity was probably in it's peak at the time of this games release.
Title: Re: Featured Game - Sonic & Knuckles - 3/20/07 Post by: James on March 21, 2007, 12:49:31 PM I can't understand the huge appeal of Sonic CD. I've tried it but it was confusing. I got stuck on one bit a fair way in where I was going round and round in circles. It's ok, I just think it's a bit over hyped.

Sure this guy cheated and used two S&K carts, but maybe he is making up for his lack of an Xband modem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XBAND).

Sonic and Knuckles was great. Probably my 3rd place Sonic game right behind Sonic 2 and Sonic CD. Title: Re: Featured Game - Sonic & Knuckles - 3/20/07 Post by: Izret101 on March 21, 2007, 01:31:52 PM You could put other carts into Sonic and Knuckles and they would do the "no no" finger wave at you.
I don't remember if it opened on its own or you had to hit buttons on the controler but you could indeed unlock bonus games. It was the blue and red ball stages. Loved those :) Very hard to play on a B&W TV though lol Title: Re: Featured Game - Sonic & Knuckles - 3/20/07 Post by: Cobra on March 21, 2007, 03:01:36 PM Locking this to Sonic The Hedgehog 3 increased the Zones to 14 instead of just 6, and made it one of the best Genesis games ever, and THE best Sonic game right above Sonic CD in my opinion. Sonic's popularity was probably in it's peak at the time of this games release. The whole Sonic 3 + Sonic & Knuckles experience was the best! It also took ages to get hyper Sonic and Knuckles, as well as Super Tails to get the true endings. If they had then mixed this with the time travelling, bonus stages, and music of Sonic CD with cartoon scenes I don't think I would of ever been able to tear away from the TV. The popularity of Sonic & Knuckles when it hit was phenomenal! We had to travel a very very long way just to find a place we could hire it from since it was all hired out any where in my suburb, or the next one, or the next one, or the next one, etc. |
