Title: Duke Nukem Forever Announcement 10th Anniversary
Post by: Hydrobond on April 27, 2007, 07:18:12 AM
That's right!  April 27, 2007 marks the 10th anniversary of Duke Nukem Forever being announced. Will it ever come out?

I honestly can't believe this is still (even technically) in development.  Y'know, if they'd sold the license to Capcom, and they'd wanted to do ANYthing with it, there'd be a slew of DN games out now...

Probably a best-of somewhere too...

Damn it has been that long! What a joke. If the game ever does come out I am sure it will suck ass.

^I'm not too sure about that.  They keep the rendering engine up to date it seems.  And as an FPS goes, thats usually the big thing.  Fundamentally, there are few things to seperate each FPS from the next.

It won't live up to the 10 year+ development time.

Two years ago I would've said no it'll be a joke indefinately. Then they finally released Prey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prey_%28video_game%29) after 10 years. Anyone who remembers Prey from E3 '97 knows when it came out last year it was evactly as it was envisioned. Knowing that a sequel to Prey is also in the works I still think there's a small chance DNF will still come out, perhaps within the next 2 years or so.

DNF will come. I'm keeping faith. The world needs a good ol fashioned game like Duke Nukem to break the monotony of boring FPS games.

Then give Prey a go, DNF wil probably use the same engine anyway. Gravity usage, puzzles, flying, portals, living weapons. If you suffer from vertigo then do not play Prey at all. It can be like a crazy amusement park ride at times with all the walking on walls and ceiling and changing gravity on the fly. Weird stuff like walking through a box into a completely different level and looking behind you and seeing the level you left. Portals that only occupy 2d space that you walk through. Awesome game. I play few FPS's but man am I ever looking forward to Prey 2.

Not to mention probably the best Intro for a game I've ever played that has a very fitting soundtrack, and plenty of Art Bell to enjoy throughout the first part of the game.

I really do want to try out Prey. However I'm not sure my PC will be able to run it, and I'm not interested in getting a 360, so I dunno.

Want to know my reasoning that DNF will come out? There were screenshots for Prey on the original Duke Nukem 3D CD, and that came out. DNF will be next.

I played Prey's demo and liked it.

It's a pretty cheap 360 title ($19.99). Eventually I'll probably get it.

DNF will come out the same day they make a game/movie/book deal about the events which take place in my butt.  This game has been passed around so many times if it was ever anyone's child it'd be dead from neglect.  It's realy sad how they've handled this, but it's dead.

Nope. I'm still taking 3D Realms' word that it is still being made. The world needs Duke now more than ever. :)

I think DNF should come out on the same day as Pimps At Sea, Chinese Democracy by Guns N' Roses, Phantom, and StarCraft: Ghost. That would kick ass.

God, has it really been 10 years?  Holy shit.  I was talking to my little brother about it a few days ago.  I looked it up and they're release date is still just "It will be done when it's done"

And yes, we know the game has taken a long time.  There's no possible joke you could make about the game's development time that we haven't already heard.  :)

You know, this game, it could actualy get a release date.  What I wonder though is what system it'll be released for.  Right now my money is on either the pico, n-gage, phantom, game & watch, or the 360PC.  Man, all those "killer" graphics will look SWEET!

Tynstar, it's because they say that they've heard every joke in the book about it.

That's because it is a joke. Why bother even talking about the game if you are not going to release it?

But 3D Realms is working on it. George Broussard has confirmed many times recently that they are still working on it. http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?id=14250716
http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/showpost.php?p=480010&postcount=629

Also: Scott Miller has confirmed it too. http://www.yougamers.com/articles/1820_scott_miller_-_the_man_who_would_be_king-page4/

"Scott: First, we fully admit we're screwed up the development of DNF, and it's now an industry joke. I laugh (and cry) when I think about it, too. Our fault is that we set the bar too high, and we tried too hard to make the game to beat all games. In the last 18 months we've taken a much more realistic look at the project, we've hired a truckload of experienced help, and I personally believe we are now on the right track…finally"

"Cynics may not believe this but Duke Nukem Forever is in full development and has a team of 33 people working on it; surely the history of its production would scare off potential workers, yes?

Scott: You would think so, but not at all. In fact, in the last year especially we've dramatically upgraded the level of experienced & talented developers in-house, hiring key developers from several blockbuster projects. These new developers have made a stunningly positive impact on the project. And we continue to hire. I think when any developer visits our studio, meets the people already here, and sees what we already have in place…well, it becomes an easy sell. "

I'm keeping my hopes up. I've been keeping them up for 10 years now. I bet you that by year's end we'll see something major out of 3D Realms involving DNF.

After reading Tondog's latest post I had remembered a story I had read a while ago. A mass exodus of 3d Realms employees who had worked on DNF for a long time had left and they tried to cover it up.

I know that doesn't mean DNF will or won't get released, but after so many years and so many employee changes I doubt it'll be the Duke we all know and love. That puts allot of doubt on how good and how true to the series it'll be. Prey may also be 10 years old, the there isn't a game to be used for basis of comparison to see how it's changed. Duke has a huge reputation for being both a pioneer and extremely popular, big shoes to fill after 10 years on anticipation.

We really need one of those "beating a dead horse" emoticons.  :P

I use to play PSO with a guy on the GameCube that worked at 3d Realms as a level designer for DNF. Last time I checked I don't think he was working there any more.
