Title: Nintendo dominated in Japan (May sales) Post by: captain_nintendo on June 11, 2007, 08:18:35 AM Japan: DS Drives Game Market Up 10% in May; Over 17 Mil Sold (http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=16437)
"GameDaily BIZ has received the latest Japanese video game sales data from the Famitsu Marketing Data Service. The report (covering data collected from April 30 to May 27) reveals an increase of 10.2 percent for the overall video game market in Japan." "Unsurprisingly, the Nintendo DS led the charge with 619,434 units of the DS Lite sold and an additional 1,236 units of the original DS. Nintendo's Wii came in a distant second with 251,794 units. Placing third was Sony's PSP with 123,673 units. The PS3 meanwhile sold just 45,321 and just like in North America was outsold by its predecessor, the PS2, which sold 53,049. Finally, Microsoft's Xbox 360 11,082 units. How do so many DS units sell each month?!? WOW :o Title: Re: Nintendo dominated in Japan (May sales) Post by: phoenix1967 on June 11, 2007, 08:42:27 AM Mind-boggling!
I do wonder, though, if the demand for the DS is what is keeping Wii production down... Title: Re: Nintendo dominated in Japan (May sales) Post by: Tynstar on June 11, 2007, 10:52:50 AM The DS numbers still amaze me. When will it slow down?
Title: Re: Nintendo dominated in Japan (May sales) Post by: Tan on June 11, 2007, 11:03:47 AM I have to wonder what games they are buying. Personally I haven't seen anything worthwhile in ages and probably nothing new until Phantom hourglass comes out.
Title: Re: Nintendo dominated in Japan (May sales) Post by: phoenix1967 on June 12, 2007, 03:57:03 PM I still am amazed by the broad appeal of handhelds. Unless I'm waiting for a plane or something, I just don't get the appeal. :-/

Title: Re: Nintendo dominated in Japan (May sales) Post by: phoenix1967 on June 12, 2007, 06:07:48 PM I guess they're probably more suited for a younger market...
Title: Re: Nintendo dominated in Japan (May sales) Post by: Shimra on June 12, 2007, 06:36:14 PM I guess they're probably more suited for a younger market... Yeah no. If anything the DS appeals to a wider range of people than any system/portable besides the wii. It's the innovation/gimmick if you will that causes such a diverse group of people to buy it, not to mention the unique range of games to say the least. Title: Re: Nintendo dominated in Japan (May sales) Post by: hXd on June 12, 2007, 08:01:04 PM The DS numbers still amaze me. When will it slow down? It'll slow down when the other two companies get their acts together. Although you gotta admit, Nintendo struck gold with their concepts for Wii and DS. Title: Re: Nintendo dominated in Japan (May sales) Post by: captain_nintendo on June 12, 2007, 09:29:03 PM The DS numbers really don't suprise me I suppose.....
Nintendo has always PWN'd when it comes to portable gaming. Title: Re: Nintendo dominated in Japan (May sales) Post by: Ghost Soldier on June 13, 2007, 09:44:17 AM I've yet to buy a DS, but its on my list.
Title: Re: Nintendo dominated in Japan (May sales) Post by: atari_wizard on June 13, 2007, 10:25:43 AM We have 4 in our household. We bought the 2 of the regulars and then 2 of the lites. My wife gave her original DS to our daughter.
Title: Re: Nintendo dominated in Japan (May sales) Post by: Cobra on June 15, 2007, 04:42:49 AM Those stats also reflect the Australian market if the owner of the local game store is in the know.
DS & Wii are dominating.... although maybe not exactly the same PSP sales here.... well I may be wrong but originally Harvey Norman (yes the same line of stores that had that 360 powered PS3 display) cut down their PC section by a whole row to bring in the PSP... this row is once again dominated by PC with the PSP stuff hiding at the end corner, and in bargain bins in the store. The Wii sections in stores are growing most, meanwhile PS3 gets a small 1/4 of the PS2 asthe 360 gets a slightly bigger (no doubt based more on number of titles available rather than popularity) section of the 'ol Xbox section. Title: Re: Nintendo dominated in Japan (May sales) Post by: Fuyukaze on June 17, 2007, 05:49:31 PM It doesnt surprise me how well the DS is selling. Just in my home we have 6 DS systems. My sister has her original Nintendogs and a lite, my mother has her lite, my brother in law has his silver, and I've got my silver and blue one. Funny thing is, 3 years ago I'd have told anyone to their face I'd never want a DS let alone over 20 games for it! If I could, I'd have even more.
Title: Re: Nintendo dominated in Japan (May sales) Post by: phoenix1967 on June 18, 2007, 12:28:48 PM I guess I see $130 for a DS or $170 for a PSP as that much money I won't have available to spend on games for my current consoles.
I know there's a lot of good games out there for hand-helds, but I just cannot bring myself to buying one. Oh well. More for you guys I guess. ;D Title: Re: Nintendo dominated in Japan (May sales) Post by: Tan on June 18, 2007, 12:41:56 PM Mind-boggling! I do wonder, though, if the demand for the DS is what is keeping Wii production down... Plenty of Wii's in stores around here, every retailer seems to have a dozen or two at any time, even oddball places like supermarkets with electronic sections. DS's have been the same since prob a week or two after the Lite was released. |
