Title: Let's Talk about Rock Band (all versions)
Post by: Tan on June 19, 2007, 09:51:22 AM
Figured we might as well start a thread on this game too.  ;)

http://kotaku.com/gaming/shred/rock-bands-fender-strat-270130.php

^^ Has a couple of pics of the new Fender Strat, very nice.

Also here's a few details from another post on Kotaku which came from the latest Game Informer mag.:

  • The game will ship on one disc, which will contain four campaigns, one for each instrument. In addition, there's also a big band option for four-player co-op madness.
  • You can use any combination of online/offline play. Two online two off, one online three off, doesn't matter.
  • The vocals have been expanded from what we've seen in games like SingStar. The game's got a phoneme detector, so individual vowels and consonants are picked up.
  • It's an EA game. So players create their own avatars, and can create different ones for each instrument the game offers.
  • Each instrument character model has had different styles of animation mo-capped, so that you can decide what kind of hip-waggling and stage-strutting they'll be performing.
  • You'll be able to design your own band logo for use online.

That is sweet looking but I want to see the "drums". I like the two sets of fret buttons!

I'm not sure if that mag had it but there is a pic of the drumset somewhere, it's not finalized yet though. The idea they are shooting for is a 4 piece set similar to   one of those digital drum sets popular in the 80's with real wooden drumsticks that has a stand so it wil sit nicely in front of a couch at playing level.

Doesn't look too bad.

I'm a bit excited for this. I just wish that there would be a Wii version and/or it won't cost a trillion dollars.

The MSRP for Rock Band is going to be $199.99. :o

That includes the wireless guitar, drum set and microphone.

The game by itself will cost $59.99.

Wow I was right! I figured it would be 200. Drums are ugly but I guess I can't expect a real kit. LOL

According to a GameCrazy employee, the wireless guitar for 360 is $20 more than the PS3 one.

http://www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/gamecrazyrockbig.jpg

Interesting. I have a feeling it has to do with Microsoft using proprietary wireless technology in the 360, and there might be some kind of licensing fee there. But even then, $20 per product is ridiculous for a technology license fee. I have a feeling this price isn't true.

First few songs listed:

The Who "Won't Get Fooled Again"
Mountain "Mississippi Queen"
David Bowie "Suffragette City"
Black Sabbath "Paranoid"
Blue Oyster Cult "Don't Fear the Reaper"
The Ramones "Rockaway Beach"
Rush "Tom Sawyer"
Bon Jovi "Wanted Dead or Alive"
Nirvana "In Bloom"
Stone Temple Pilots "Vasoline"
Weezer "Say It Ain't So"
Foo Fighters "Learn to Fly"
Metallica "Enter Sandman"
The Hives "Main Offender"
The Strokes "Reptilia"
Queens of the Stone Age "Go With the Flow"

It's funny we were just talking about Tom Sawyer the other night, awesome that it made it.  8)

Since it's coming out end of November, I think I'll wait to see how well I do with Birthday and Christmas gift cards and then get it.

With the drums and guitar both costing $80 apiece, the game by itself costing $60, and the microphone $40, it makes economic sense to get the whole kit at once for $200. It's tempting to just get the drum kit and game itself, though, knowing that the Xbox GH2 Explorer guitar will be compatible...8)

But if you by the kit you will then have a bass and a guitar.

Yeah. The kit really is the way to go. Besides, you can always trade in the microphone for value if you don't know of anyone that would want to sing...

Rumor time!

http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2007/08/10/final-pricing-and-wireless-controllers-for-rock-band-our-inside-source-speaks

Basically, the bundle will be $200 for both platforms (and weigh 20 pounds!). HOWEVER the Xbox 360 version WILL NOT HAVE WIRELESS ACCESSORIES! Again, it's due to MS using proprietary wireless technology instead of a standard technology, in this case Bluetooth, which is what Sony and Nintendo both use.

Per the article...
"...our source confirms that as of now the standard $200 package will come with a wireless guitar for the PS3 and a wired guitar for the 360."

We'll have to see how it all plays out. The game is still 3 months away.

I'm going to wait until I know more about if the GH3 wireless will work with RB. And, if the wireless connectivity for GH3 by Activision is a limited exclusivity agreement with Microsoft.

If so, then wait and see if RB has a chance at getting a wireless 360 bundle.

It looks to be a great game, but I'm going to wait until at least January before I look into buying one. By then we should know more.

Does anyone know anything about the following 2 questions:

1. For the PS2 version of Rock Band, will GH controllers be compatible with it?

2. Will the GH3 wireless controller be compatible with the 360 version of Rock Band?

Quote
Grandlear asked, “Is there a network ability to play with others across the internet?”
“Rock Band” PR rep: Yes, there will be multiplayer online functionality. It will be both cooperative and competitive.

imsneakierthanu2 wanted to know, “For the Ps3 version, the guitar from ‘Guitar Hero III' won't be compatible with ‘Rock Band'? True?”
“RB”: Harmonix has an open platform philosophy and their games will be compatible with third-party controllers that conform to the various platform controller standards.

mike hasn't gone next-gen yet, and needs to know about his PS2, “So does the PS2 version work with Guitar Hero controllers?”
“RB“: Harmonix has an open platform philosophy and their games will be compatible with third-party controllers that conform to the various platform controller standards.

Erwin was curious about the bass controller, asking, “What about the bass? Do we need to buy it separately?”
“RB”: The Fender Stratocaster ‘Rock Band' guitar will function as both the lead guitar as well as bass. In terms of getting another guitar to play either guitar or bass, consumers can either use another Fender Stratocaster ‘Rock Band' guitar or use another guitar controller as Harmonix has an open platform philosophy and their games will be compatible with third-party controllers that conform to the various platform controller standards.

We got some clarity for Gazpachoking about the USB hub, “Does the 360 bundle come with a USB hub?”
“RB”: Yes

Mr. Krinkle asked the obvious question that has been on a lot of peoples' minds, “Is there any Wii version in the works?”
“RB”: We have only announced “Rock Band” for the Xbox 360, PS3 and the PS2. Stay tuned for more announcements.

I pwn n00bs (who was recently ousted out of his band) and darkbola , wanted to know about other hardware combinations asking, “Will there be a compatible microphone and lead guitar or bass guitar combo?”
“RB“: We have not finalized the plans as of yet.

Nope that is a 20$ price difference.

GCrazy leaks can be rather accurate.
Almost a year before the 360 Elite was released we had recieved information on it at work.

If you pump the right people for information and they have read thru all the mostly useless pamphlets that are sent to the stores you can get some interesting heads ups.

I miss Game Crazy :-/

Here's supposedlym the final track list:

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/830/830709p1.html

I'm actually a little underwhelmed with this list. The song choices seem a bit too second string for my tastes. Hell some of these bands I have plenty of their tunes and yet haven't heard of some of these obscure tracks they chose. Of all the list maybe 9 are worthy for my tastes, and I'm big into all types of music from all decades. Seeing this track list sure put into doubt spending that kind of cash. It's like the GH 80's edition dilemma all over again.

Compare that list to this one:

http://www.guitarheronews.com/guitar-hero-3/guitar-hero-3-song-list/

They put the drums with the wrong game!!  :P

Post by: phoenix1967 on October 27, 2007, 10:07:42 AM
Tough call.

While I sadly admit to only being familiar with a few of the songs of the 2000s on Rock band, I am familiar with most of the rest of this list and it seems pretty strong.

GH3's list, on the other hand, seems to have a stronger cover selection (which is always hit or miss), than Original Artists (many of which are bands I've only heard of, but no song familiarity).

Both lists seem solid to me overall, though.

2000s
The Hives "Main Offender"  - this is a cool song, reminds me of the Stooges.
Queens of the Stone Age "Go With the Flow" - meh... but better than that piece of shit "3's & 7's" on GH3
The Strokes "Reptilia" - meh
Jet "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" - this one I really like, should be a fun one.
OK Go "Here It Goes Again" - this is a good one too
Nine Inch Nails "The Hand That Feeds" - a NIN tune with some bounce... another good one.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Maps" - this one is pretty boring.
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Dani California" - how can you ever go wrong with the Peppers. great video for this song btw.
Coheed & Cambria "Welcome Home" - nice guitar in this one, not much for for the singer after about the half way point though.
Fallout Boy "Dead on Arrival"  - I think I'm too old to comment on Fallout Boy
The Killers "When You Were Young" - I like this song... also on GH3
New Pornographers "Electric Version" - couldn't find this one... it is the name of their album though.

I'm not too blown away by the songs in this or Guitar Hero 3, but GH2 and the 80's edition were dreams come true for me, so pretty much anything released after those would be a let down for me.

I do love the fact that Iron Maiden and Metallica made it to both of these.  And more Rush is never a bad thing  ;)

I was at Best Buy today and they had the Rock Band demo set up. I was holding the Strat and my daughter the sticks... we were ready to rock!

sadly the demo then proceeded to freeze on the load screen.... damn.

so we played GH3 co-op. Talk Dirty To me.

the Fender Stratocaster is pretty darn wicked though. shame I didn't actually get to play it.

Finally got to play it yesterday. It was fun. Really really fun, moreso than Guitar Hero. My buddy was on drums while I was on guitar, and I must say that the game is tough. I can easily beat Guitar Hero 2 on expert, but some of the songs on hard mode in Rock Band were killing me. The hammer ons and pull offs are exactly the same as GH2, but the space to hit the notes is much smaller making GH3 look like the easiest thing in the world. Other than that, the guitar itself is fairly cool, the bottom *chords* seem kinda pointless though and strumming doesn't make that clack noise so it takes a while to get used to.

Great game. I won't be paying $180 for it but it's a sweet game that I would love to have.

that's funny, everything I've heard and read is that the guitar part is a lot easier than the Guitar Hero series.

Haha, the lack of a clacking noise really threw me for a loop. So when there was a long series of power chords instead of listening to the clacks for rhythm I often found myself strumming twice thinking I only strummed once. And maybe it's just the note layout but the hit area seemed a lot smaller.

ahh, the clacking always bugs me. I turn up the volume to drown it out so that's a difference I wouldn't notice. the Guitar feels a lot different, that will take some getting used to.

I've been too poor lately to pick this and a 360 up, but one of my friends got it.  He's been playing the drums and I've been on guitar.

One thing that kind of bothers me about this as opposed to Guitar Hero is that it is really hard to see which notes are hammer on's and pull off's when compared to Guitar Hero.  The solo's it doesn't really matter, but on the verses and what not it can kind of screw you over.

Also on expert, the microphone is WAAAAAAY to picky.  Apparently my voice registers to low on Wanted Dead or Alive even though it sounds fine.

Me, phoenix and a few other friends played for about 6 hours last night. damn this game is fun. the vocals were a bit rough on the ears but we had a blast.

^It's a very good game.

They do need to randomize songs better, though. We got stuck playing "Say it Ain't So" and "Blitzkrieg Bop" WAAAAAAAAYYYY too much. New songs on the World Tour were few and far between until we stumbled on "Detroit Rock City", "Tom Sawyer", and "Run for the Hills" at the end of the night on that one set.

I got to play it at my friend's house the other night. Great fun, I liked how the drums kinda took me out of my comfort zone. I find that the guitar parts are a lot easier than GH, especally on Expert. Singing is fun, I sang on Yeah Yeah Yeah's "Maps" (my favorite song of the bunch) and Coheed And Cambria's "Welcome Home".

Definitely. That was one of the few songs we 5-starred.

The guitar definitely seemed easier on Hard when compared to GH2 and 3. The drums are very tough at the start, perhaps it's just that element of taking you out of your comfort zone like you mentioned; the pedal seems to be what makes it the most challenging.

My 8 eight year old daughter is getting pretty good at the drums. I also must confess it was a proud papa moment when she sang Black Sabbaths "Paranoid".

Rock Band kicks ass. My wife got it for me for Christmas. I haven't tried the solo mode yet but play with people in a "band" is a lot of fun. Kari sings, Rick plays bass/guitar and I play the drums.

I downloaded the Metallica and Black Sabbath three song backs. I also got Fortunate Son by CCR.

As I've mentioned no less than 46 times today, I finally got this over the weekend.  I had my little sister and her boyfriend over to my house on Tuesday and us and my fiance played 3 player for a bit.  I don't like how picky the vocal tracks are, but other than that it's awesome.

It was damn fun trying to sing Iron Maiden

I'm stuck on Drum Solo Tour - Medium. I'm having trouble with "Green Grass & High Tides" from the main tour and on "Day Late, Dollar Short" from the indy track set. :P

I finished the guitar solo tour on hard. pretty easy compared to GH but my goal was to unlock everything for band quickplay. I had some friends over Saturday night and we played from 6:00 till about 1:00 am. what a blast! some of the girls who sang were actually pretty good. the guys? well......

They just came out with The Cars debut album as well.

I know about 5 songs on it that I like. But nothing about the others. What do you think...get the 5 songs I like for $10 or the whole album for $15?
