Title: We need your help, please.
Post by: shaggy on June 27, 2007, 08:01:41 AM
Hey, guys.  Our 5 year old Wire Fox Terrier named Asha started throwing up last, Tuesday, 6/19/07.  My wife took her in on 6/20/07 to find out she has pancreatitis, her levels her high, and her white blood cell count was low so we had to keep her overnight.  Well on Friday, 6/22/07, she was still at the vet and her levels got worse so we visited her on Saturday morning and she definitely looked better but the vet wasn't doing any more tests until Monday the 25th.  Well we visited her Monday and her levels were normal, which is good, but her liver levels were high and she has Jondus which is normal when the pancreus get inflammed.  Well the vet let us take her home yesterday thinking that she is depressed and just wants to be home and hopefully that will help.  Well she threw up about 8 times over the course of the night so my wife is going back to the vet this morning to see what they say.  I'm sure it will involve another overnight or two.  She does look better because on Tuesday last week she would just lay there but now she at least gets up every once in awhile and her tails wags and is up every so often.  She also wants water which is a good sign but the vet told us only to give her a teaspoon of water every hour.  I'll keep you guys updated but also give Asha your prayers to get over this.  Thanks.

WoW...my g/friend is a head vettech at a local vet hospital here, thus having us aquired around 18 or so broken, sick, unwanted animals over the years...lol One of our most recent was a 1 year old malnurious king charles cavilier with an obstruction and pancreatitis...his then owners would only put up $500 for the bill and nothing else beyond that, but needless to say he needed surgery for the obstruction that he could not pass ,blood transfusions from the pancreatitis, xrays, ultrasound, etc. And the bill skyrocketed,so they agreed to sign ownershiip over to us instead of putting him down.But,Shaggy..I know what your going through...its tough...and she can always be susceptible to bouts of pancreatitis in the future...bland diet,no treats(or very limited bland treats)...I feel for ya,but she'll pull through... :)

Well, we visited her this past Friday and she looked about the same.  My wife visited her on Saturday morning and she called me from the vet in a very upset mood and basically she had thrown up all night and the vet said we must consider making a decision on putting her to sleep because we won't do the surgery seeing it doesn't make sense.  If we do exploratory surgery and find a tumor he said they put the dog to sleep.  If we do the surgery and find nothing than we are back at the beginning.  So the vet called us around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and said her white blood cell count sky rocketed (about 31,000, I believe).  Now the vet knows she had a bacteria so he can apply the proper antibiotic!!  We we think happened is she got the pancreatitis from a virus and than it turned into a bacterial infection so now it looks like the vet can fight it.  We aren't out of the woods yet by any means but this is definitely promising news after talk about possibly putting her to sleep.  Thanks you guys for your support and generous comments and hopefully I'll have news of her coming home and being well this week!

Well, we visited her today and she looks the same. :(  The vet says we should have seen an improvement by now so he said he is going to try another antibiotic tomorrow but he is really pushing surgery or putting her to sleep.  He also said she might have an abcess and with the research we have done there are mixed results as to if an abcess can be fixed or if it usually leads to death.  The first stint in the vet ran us a little over $1,300 and I'm sure this stint will be about the same so we are already dipping into money we don't really have.  I'm sorry I don't have the good news everyone was hoping for. :(

Well the battle has been fought and we lost.  We have to make a decision and we put her to sleep around 4 p.m. today.  The vet thinks that the infection spread throughout her whole pancreus and she has patriatitis or something like that.  Not sure if that is the right word but anyways they could have done surgery but they said she is so weak she probably would have died during the surgery and if she didn't and they did suck out the infection there is still a good chance she still wouldn't make it through or that they wouldn't get the all of the infection out.  So we opted out of the surgery and had her put to sleep.  She isn't throwing up now and isn't in pain.  We did bring her home and to my wife's mom and dad's house and she was wagging her tail but would gives us any licks but she was energetic a bit but still looking weak.  We had our other dog say "goodbye" to her and fed her her favorite foods, cheese and fruit roll ups, and she actually ate them!  Right before they injected her she gave My wife, her mom, and I licks, which I believe is her way of saying goodbye, especially when she wouldn't lick us at all all day long.  It was a very touching and surprising gesture from her.  I think she was telling us it is time to let her go and  she will be alright.  What sucks is she was only 5 and seeing her wagging her tail at home and actually eating sucks.  I mean usually they are old or at least look sickly.  She was both young and didn't look sick, just weak.  She was wagging her tail and somewhat energetic.  Having to put her down after that just plain sucks.  My wife is taking it very hard so I will have my hands full.  I would like to thank you guys for your kind words and prayers and for the great community here.  Thanks you guys.  The total for everything was $2,000+ so we'll have to figure that out but that is the least of our losses right now.  Again, thank you guys for your kind words and prayers.  Asha 4/1/02 - 7/3/07

I am really sorry to hear this news. Over time your wife will realize you did what is best. I had to put one of my cats to sleep and it is the hardest thing I have ever done. I always doubted if I did the right thing. Over time I realized I did. Like you said she isn't throwing up and she is not in pain.

Best wishes man.

“ I Stood By Your Bed Last Night”

I stood beside your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, you found it hard to sleep.

I spoke to you so softly, as you brushed away a tear,
     ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…“ It's me, I haven't left you. I'm well. I'm fine. I'm here.”

I was close to you at breakfast. I watched you pour the tea.
You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today. Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels. I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today. You tend it with such care.
I want to reassure you that I'm not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my hand on you. I smiled and said,” It's me.”

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know that I was standing there.

It's possible  for me to be so near you every day.
To say to you with certainty,” I never went away.”

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew
In the stillness of that evening I was very close to you.

The day is over. I smile and watch you yawning,
And say,” Goodnight. God bless. I'll see you in the morning.”

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you, and we'll stand there side by side.

I have so many things to show you. There is so much for you to see.
Be patient. Live your journey out. Then come home to be with me.

My 15 animals and I grieve with you and your wife...our thoughts are with you!

I never know what to say in situations like this so I try to avoid them. I'll just repeat what everyone else has said and agree with Scott that maybe it was the right thing to do.

My first dog was put down when she was 15 years old. Over her last few years she was in a lot of pain and she eventually had a stroke which is when my parents decided to put her down. It was a bit of a shock for me because she had been around for my entire life. But even though I was only 11 I understood what had to be done because of the state she was in.
