Title: Xbox or PS2 or PSP?
Post by: shadowforte on January 09, 2008, 04:59:39 PM
Well, I am at a stand still. I have $200 to blow, and I am stuck on 3 systems. Here are my Pros/Cons for them:

Xbox:

+ Tons of Star Wars love
+ Halo and Half Life 2
- Ugly as heck
- Not many good RPG's

PS2:

+ Tons of great RPG's
+ I can get most games I want for $5
- No good FPS games

PSP:

+ PS1 in the palm of my hand
- Not a lot of games out for it I like.

XBox has more RPGs than people think.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2
Jade Empire
Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind (GOTY)
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 and 2
Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes
A Bard's Tale

Most of which are 10 bucks or less. However, if you're looking for sheer quantity, you're right that PS2 has a boatload of RPGs.

As far as FPSs goes, don't forget the Far Cry and Medal of Honor serieses for Xbox.

You may also want to consider if you want more multiplayer games. In that case, I'd recommend Xbox.

Get a PS2. You won't regret it. It has way more great games than the other two systems combined.

PS2 has plenty of good FPS games. Allow me to list some:

Half Life (WITH USB MOUSE AND KEYBOARD SUPPORT!)
Any of the Timesplitters games
Red Faction (the first one)
XIII
Tribes: Aerial Assault
Black
Killzone

The PS2 has a lot of FPSes that are also on the Xbox like Medal of Honor and Call of Duty.
It has all the GTA games.
Silent Hill series.
Metal Gear Solid.
GOD OF WAR!!!

All good games there. I've had many years of fun with the PS2.

It's been a while since I owned an Xbox and I can't really remember many games on it. Racing games are much better on the Xbox than the PS2 because of the analogue triggers. Despite having analogue buttons, Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2 is very much "on/off" in terms of acceleration and braking. I'm thinking of picking an Xbox up now that GAME are selling them for £20 used. I'm also thinking of getting a Gamecube again now that they're £20-30 depending on what game bundle you get.

Ummm how many of those are exclusives?

If you have 200 bucks get an Xbox lot AND a PS2, you could probably do it.
Then all you have to worry about in the future is picking up the games which arte pretty much leveling out it seems.

Well today I picked up Advent Rising, Need For Speed Most Wanted, and SSX3. This will keep me happy until next Friday, when I will get a PS2. BTW, is it worth it to get Kotor 1 if you beat Kotor 2?

Absolutely, in fact KOTOR 1  is leagues better than two in many different ways. :)

It's a decent platformer that wasn't given it's due. Not a great game, but a good game worthy of looking into.

PS2 is the better choice. Tons of great classic (via collections) and modern games. Plus, I like the PS2 controllers better than those of the Xbox.

I'd go for the XBOX, because the PS2 feels so much more dated. The graphics are worse and the controler is over a decade old. The XBOX gives me the feeling I'm still playing an up to date console, while the PS2 makes me feel like I'm on a retro machine.

When I try to play some of the good games for the PS2 now, they also seem awfully dated. I know I really enjoyed Silent Hill 2 and GTA 3 when they were just released, but now they seem like things from a far past.

I'd go for the PS2 simply because of the variety of games and I love RPGs and Shadow Hearts Covenant is on the PS2.

<_< Have you seen some of the later PS2 games? Also, even if the graphics aren't as good as the Xbox, so what. That's almost like saying the PS1 and N64 were both terrible in comparison to the Saturn.

I have both an Xbox and a PS2 and I choose my multi-platform games based on content and sound. 9 times out of 10 an Xbox version will have full 5.1 versus PLII, at least 3/4 of the time however, the PS2 versions is cheaper.

Xbox = Western dominated games and a library that is very PC-like. Mostly 5.1 sound and a lot with custom soundtrack options which change a game dramatically. Great choice if you like PC games but can't afford or don't have the hardware to play them.

PS2 = Japanese dominated games and a mixed library that doesn't have an overabundance of any particular type, just variety. Age group is everything from kids to adults.

The controller is over a decade old? Why change what isn't broken to begin with? I love the PS2/PS3 controller and the layout, much more than the Xbox one.

And also, the graphics don't have as much difference as you make it out to be.

I guess it depends on the game your playing. Many of the multi plat games I've played have a stark contrast, hell even between the PS2 and gamecube in some cases. Particularly games that have a long draw distance, PS2 versions suffer horribly unless they restrict it, but then it looks like those foggy N64 games in terms of view area.

Play a game like Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. The PS2 version has gimped lighting and shadows, and in a game like that it's paramount for gameplay. I could name you a good 20 games off the top of my head the PS2 could never have handled even in a gimped mode. Half of the battle is the developers, but the other half is the hardware bottlenecks itself.

The PS2 is just an older machine released at a time when a huge leap in technology occurred that both the Gamecube and Xbox were able to take advantage of. That's not a jab, but an observation and a tip of the hat that they did as much as they did with it for as long as they did.

MGS 3 and both God of Wars had amazing graphics on the PS2.

No, it's the exact opposite of saying that, because the ps1 and n64 both have much better looking games than the Saturn.

I say that because it's part of the reason why I experience the Playstation 2 as being more dated. Together with the dated graphics and dated gameplay of some older games.
Playing Silent Hill, for example, is like going 10 years back in time. Great if you're into that kind of thing, but I'm not. At least not if I can play a game that won't make me feel like I'm in the 90's.
