Title: Default quantity value
Post by: frood42 on April 28, 2008, 02:36:41 PM
Hi

My first post, so I thought it should be a 'noob' style question/sugestion, so sorry if this has already been sugested  ;)

Would it be possible to have an option in your profile for a default value for the 'Quantity' field (and the other fields) when adding games to a collection.

I've just started entering mine in and I end up with a loooong page of games and ended up having to repeatedly press 'TabTabTabTabTabTab1TabTabTabTabTabTab1' etc

I'm seriously considering looking for some key stroke generation software before I get to my PS1 stuff  ;D

Alright, the default qty, box, and man value if you decide to add game information upon adding is now 1.  If you uncheck that box, the games get added automatically with default values of 0 (hopefully that will make them stand out should you decide to add that information later).

;D Just the ticket! Thats fantastic.  I think you have just broken the record for swiftest responce by a site moderator I have ever seen   :speechless:

A value or tick box at the top of a list would be cool.  For example; you've worked through all the nice complete games in your collection and you are left with the cardboard box ful of loose Mega Drive carts.  It would be great to be able to go through the list picking out the 50 or so games, hit the 'add' button and on the edit screen before hitting the 'Add Games' button being able to say 'I know all of these games have neither a box or manual so I want the quantity for all of them in this list to be 1 and the other values to be 0 each' (or any other combination)

I know, I want the moon on a stick, so please feel free shoot my sugestion down in flames.  But after all this IS the sugestions thread  ;)

That will take a little more work.  I'll look into it and see what I can do.

Edit:  I think I got it working.  Hopefully it helps out.

Bingo! That is exactly what I was after.

You sir, have just become my most favourite person on the internet.  That change is going to make a HUGE difference to adding the rest of my games. Cheers.

If only the software developers at work were as fast at making changes as you are.

Where is this box to uncheck to make the default 0?

When you are checking off games, there is a "add game information upon adding" option at the top.  If you deselect this, the games will be added with 0s as defaults.  You can also do this by keeping that box checked and using the new set all buttons at the bottom to make them all 0.

Maybe I go about adding games differently than others, but I search for the game, go to its page, and select the "Add to collection" button on there. And that brings up what I have entered for that game, if it's a game I already have, it'd have the corresponding numbers, but if it was a game I didn't have, it'd say 0 for everything. Now, when I go to add a game, it says 1 for Game, box, manual if it's a game I don't have entered already, and it will say that if it's a game I already have entered as having the game, box, manual.
So, basically, with the way it is now, when entering a game I just got, I can't tell if it's one that I already have CIB, or if it's one I don't have at all.

I'm not asking it goes back to the way it was before, I can definitely see how this new system helps people adding a ton of games at once. I just want to be able to click the "add to collection" button in a game page and have it display exactly what I've entered into it.

Hum.....that's a really round about way to see if you have a game in your collection.

If frood42 doesn't object I'd be willing to drop the default back down to 0, since we now have the set all buttons at the bottom of the page.

I'ved used that to verify if I own something too, I figured it was less intensive on the servers then clicking Who Owns this from a game page.  But I think the default view was blank before not 0.  Could we add another check box next to "add game info" that would allow us to prefill with 1 or not.

This change is not working for me as is.  I picked up some game manuals at lunch and came back and did a database search to add them.  Normally if I see values I know that I screwed up and picked up something I already own (then I just change to Trade List and add them there), now I can't tell if I own it or if it's just showing "1" because of the new default.  Even doing an Add with 'Only Show Games Not in Collection" checked would cause issues since in this case I may own the game but need to add the manual so I have to run the search both ways.  I remember adding my collection was a pain having to do the Tab,Tab,Tab,1 etc but I think we need a better solution that fits both starting out and maintaining our collections better.

I just took a look at the Set All options you added to the bottom if more then one game is listed (nice work on that!!).  Seems to me that alone will make the process of adding your collection easier and that we should put the default back to blank to make maintaining our collections easier.

OK, default is switched back to blank.  The default in the set all fields is now 1.  So if you want to set all fields to one, all you have to do is click one button.  Hopefully that will make everyone happy :)

Yeah I can see how that works better.  With the option at the bottom of the screen for updating everything above it works very well indeed.

My bulk upload is only going to be a one off, then, like you guys, I'll be adding to the list game by game.  So this is a better way of doing it all round.

It's nice to be part of an online community where your sugestions a listened to and put into place. Yay RFG    :)
