Title: Firefox Download Day 2008
Post by: OatBob on June 17, 2008, 02:34:28 PM
Firefox 3 is out today and Mozilla is shooting for a world record for most one-day downloads.

The servers opened up at 1PM EST (5PM GMT), and the record is only for this first day, so get downloading!

I used the Beta for a while, but with the way I have things set up it was really a pain in the butt because of incompatibility issues. I got the official 3.0 today, and it's not so bad. A couple extensions aren't compatible, but it's not enough to make me continue using the outdated version.

I talked to someone today who told me that IE8 would be the last microsoft web browser and that the next OS will come with a mozilla browser....

I just tried searching for it on google and it didn't come up with anything, so either that was news that hasn't leaked yet or it was just a rumor.

It'll really depend on IE8's success I think. Combined IE still has over 3/4 of the market share and that would be a hard advantage to let go of.

Just for those interested, Chatzilla which can be used for the RFGen chat, is compatible with Firefox 3. ;)

IE has always had an unfair advantage as it comes pre-installed with Windows OSes.  The difference with Opera and Firefox is that users actively seek it out instead of passively letting it fall in their lap.

With that having been said, often when I offer networking help and advice to people, they refer to IE as "the internet", so any other party still has a long way to go to shake that mentality.

I guess it'll be another four years until Firefox 4 in that case ;)

"FIREFOX fans claim to have set a world record after the latest version of the web browser was downloaded more than 8 million times in 24 hours."

"There is no official world record for the most downloads of a particular program in 24 hours – the Download Day attempt was the first of its kind and had no specific target to beat."

Their goal was 5 million, so I would say, yep.
