Title: Should I Clear Out My Entire Collection?
Post by: tholly on June 29, 2008, 09:00:24 AM
So, I realized recently that I have hardly played anything that wasn't X360, PS3, or Wii in the past 2 years or so.  Most of my collection sits unplayed, collecting dust.  I have amassed a sizeable collection and feel that, as my fiancee and I are getting ready to move to a new apartment, and my parents don't want all this stuff at their house anymore, I need to let stuff go.  Before I did anything drastic, I wanted to get a handle on how everyone feels.

Please answer the poll and explain your reasoning in the topic....

If such a sale were to commence, it would start in 12 days (2 Friday from now....going to be at my parents house where my collection stays...)  So, I have 12 days to decide if I want to clear everything out....

If it's about money and space I would sell off the biggest/most expensive stuff first (i.e. the arcade cabs) then from there sell off the systems you only have a couple games for or ones you never play. Then sell off the games you rarely/never play. Once all that stuff is gone, see where you are, your collection will probably be a more manageable size and you'll have a ton of money to spend on other stuff.

It's not actually about the money...the money is just nice.

It's about the space and the idea of having all this stuff that I don't really care about too much that other people could enjoy a lot more than me.

Financially, I'm fine just keeping it all.

I say you should keep all the systems + games you play frequently and keep anything that you believe you might regret getting rid of later down the road.  Also get rid of systems that are backwards compatible, for example if you have a PS2, get rid of your PS1.  Gameboy Advance? Gameboy Color + Original.

I might sit on it for a while (as long as you can, anyway) and make sure you don't get any second thoughts. If you are still pretty okay with it then, go for it. There are always emulators if you miss certain things.

I'd at least keep your Criterion stuff since a lot of it is probably out of print and goes for a sizable amount of cash on eBay.

Keep your gems, ditch the less appealing titles. Ones with little to not attraction to you are easy to pass on in the future. Keep your systems if they work as they can be stashed and brought along, it's the dead weight games that must go.

Yeah, I'll say really think about, and what has sentimental value. Anything you got for its rarity alone, and your have no fondness for, you might as well sell.

Even if you don't play some of it, but hold a special place for it, keep it. Like mentioned earlier by the end you'll have less stuff and it'll be easier to manage.

With the stuff you do decided to sell you can even advertise them on Game Gavel (http://www.gamegavel.com/?nrs2=100098) or Chase the Chuck Wagon (http://www.chasethechuckwagon.com/) and help out these eBay alternatives at he same time, before eBay introduces its use PayPal or get stuffed policy to the rest of the world as it has done to Australia already.

Keep the collection. Because if you sell it, even though you may not think so at the moment, there WILL be regrets down the line. If you have the financial means to pay for the wedding without having to sell stuff, and you're just thinking of selling for space reasons...that ain't good enough!

When I sold my SegaGenesis collection, I didn't realize until I got back into gaming just how much I'd miss it. About 40 AAA titles and some rare ones...ALL CIB! And I took care of my collection very well.

Yea, the DVD collection would stay.  I would actually use some of the sale money to work on getting Criterions I don't have.

Hmm, yeah, you may want to think about what phoenix1967 said.
I stop playing my Sega Nomad, and lost interest for a long time... I miss it now though :(

As someone who places his game collection on a lower level of importance in comparison to his other hobbies I completely understand. I have on occasion and prob will again, sell off a chunk to make room for something better or to have cash for something else. It's not a matter of money, it's a matter of priority, living space and convenience.

Another option is to "cull the herd" so to speak. Get rid of anything that has less than 10 games, anything loose, and demos/duplicates. Once that's done you may differently about the main collection when it's cleaned up and better organized. Then you can decide on a system by system basis without any loose ends.

Things that I have sold in the past I've bought back.  Often at a much greater expense.  I like knowing that I have something when I get the itch to play it once in a blue moon.  You could rent a storage unit or make arrangements at your new place.  I have under the bed storage and other arrangements throughout the house.

Thing is, some games I have never played...hell, all my PS1 games have never seen a system, save for maybe 5 or 6 that I threw in just to try....and took out very quickly.

I have done huge sales of old collections in the past....sold my entire Transformers collection for about $600 and sold my entire Ghostbusters collection for about $300 (and the only time I missed them was the Transformers stuff when the movie came out recently, but only because I could have sold them for more money during the movie's popularity.)

I voted yes, but more specifically, only the stuff you never use. You say you never play your ps1? Then dump that stuff. Over 200 ps1 games take up a lot of room, and that could be solved by selling. you shouldn't sell all of your games and DVDs, at least not the ones that you play every so often. But, I digress... 'Tis your decision. Good luck!!

I'm actually going through the same process right now, for much the same reasons. I live in a small apartment, and it is starting to look much too cluttered for my tastes, and there are several games here that I have never played, or have finished and don't see myself ever going back too. I'm sure there will be some I may regret selling down the road, but nothing is final, I can always buy them back. I figure it's better to be satisfied with the way things are now, rather than wondering and worrying about every future scenario.

Yea, I would actual split the procedes of the sale up into three seperate accounts:

1/3 -> Wedding Fund
1/3 -> Criterion Collection & Other DVD Fund
1/3 -> Pay off my Master's Degree Fund

Don't know how much money I could make, but of what I did make, if I sold, that's how it would be split up.

Well it sounds like you really don't have any attachment to a lot of that stuff, so ultimately I would say sell it.

Hi, I'm here.

Since you aren't in a bad situation financially, I would say hang onto it.  Maybe sell off a few things that you don't want, but if you sell everything I have a feeling you would regret it.

I'm getting married myself in just under a year and I considered selling off a big part of my collection to fund it.  I don't play to many of my games right now and it would definatley help to fund the last $10,000 we need before the wedding.  After thinking about it for a few weeks I relized that most of the stuff that I would sell I would probably regret, and they would be damn hard to find again.  The funny thing is my girlfriend agreed with me.

Of course, it all rests on exactly how attached you are to everything.  Since you've sold off big collections in the past it might not be to bad for you to sell off a collection of your size.

I've just started re-collecting stuff from my past; at the time I thought 'I won't ever play this again' -- it's not worth getting rid of if you have some kind of emotional connection to it, even if you haven't played it in forever.  I have a PS3/360/Wii and I'm trying to get back the old consoles, instead of the other way around.

As others have said though, you could probably cut the fat and pretty substantially cut your collection down; I do this every once in a while to ensure that I only have things I want.

Id say get rid of all your arcade games, but keep Super Mario World pinball.  That thing is rare.  I've only seen 2 so far in my life. One at CiCi's pizza somewhere, and another at this Chuck-E-Cheese like arcade.

yea.  The arcade stuff is staying.  Mario pinball is going nowhere.  There were only 1600 of them made ever.
